Charles Breakspear: Stevenage v Northampton Town

Trepidation, anticipation or any other 'tion' were going to be
present at a match officiated by Mr Charles Breakspear.
The term 'Card Shark' is used on here, but I don't use that
descriptor of him despite the statistical numbers. This is in
spite of the fact that in the last 8 (eight) games that he has
officiated Northampton Town, including this game, he has awarded
the red card sanction to Northampton players 8 (eight) times
(one per match). Over the same period (3 seasons) we have only
been awarded 4 by other officials.
I remember the majority of them and believe that most if not all
had their full justification either through straight or a two
caution red.
Tonight followed similar traits regarding the numbers of
cautions and the red card issued (9), that are associated with
Mr Breakspear..
To be honest aside from one of the Stevenage cautions, where
both Ref and AR were probably 'conned', all sanctions had their
justification in Law.
His first caution was on 21 minutes however he had provided
sufficient warning(s) beforehand, when he could easily have been
justified in sanctioning earlier.
We have experienced officials this season who are not even
consistent in their own match, let alone over a span of games.
It was good to see an official who is consistent, the teams know
that he is consistent which is what clubs, pundits and fans
continually cry out for.
The Northampton manager has even said that he warned his players
beforehand of Mr Breakspears reputation!
Mr Breakspear is the epitome of consistency yet gets criticised
because he isn't consistent with the inconsistency of other
officials?
All in all a good display from Mr Breakspear which, although I
was probably in the minority, I enjoyed.

I really like Mr Breakspear, and I very much dislike the line
"Card Shark". He is a consistent official which is the important
thing, and probably one of the most consistent outside of the
different Select Groups.

Can I ask which Stevenage caution you are referring to?

I thought that it was one towards the end where our Nicky Adams
threw himself to the floor following minimal contact from behind
off the full back.
It was just in front of me and I wrongly expected that he had.
Just looked at the match detail and notice that that a caution
wasn't awarded. My error.

👍🏻. That explains my confusion. I remember the
Stevenage cautions all being nailed on.

[emoji106] Apologies.
Did you have a similar view of my overall assessment of Mr
Breakspear?

Yes, overall a good performance. Looked a tough game to ref.
As always he looked in control. You know what you are going to
get with him.

I remember having a conversation with a manager after a game
where I had cautioned 5 of his players, yet he was fullsome in
his praise. His comment was "told them before what to expect, if
they are too stupid to listen to you and to me, they deserve to
pay their £15s"
Being consistent with yourself is tough to maintain so Nr
Breakspear should be highly comnended
