Context - the “penalty” in the Liverpool game v Napoli.

I didn't think that it was a penalty - I also didn't think the
one VAR gave for handball at Chelsea was either!

Absolutely pointless. I was in the away end which is the
furthest corner from the penalty that Byrch gave and I thought
it was a dive from 150 yards away. If VAR can’t be used to
correct blatant cheating what’s the point? Add that to the
penalty given in Istanbul against Chelsea that was never a
penalty (as the Assistant clearly recognised) and it’s just a
joke. Absolute waste of time.

Yes, on seeing the replays in the Liverpool game, I don't think
it was a penalty but I'm not sure that it was a dive either.
Interesting that Peter Walton commented (on BT) at the time of
the award that he couldn't see it being a clear and obvious
error by Herr Brych. At the time I agreed with him but
subsequent replays from different angles (which VAR would have
had access to) suggested otherwise. Pity because I thought Felix
and his team had a great game otherwise.
As an afterthought, there appeared to be a problem before the
start of the game which seemed to be causing Brych discomfort.
The suggestion was made that the VAR screen may not have been
working. I hope that is not the reason why screen replays were
not looked at prior to the penalty award being confirmed.

I think as Mr Klopp said in his post match it is still a human
operating VAR, that then decides whether an error was 'clear and
obvious' - a threshold of which I don't think was reached.
This was a defender going for the ball, missing it by a good
half second, and therefore leaving a dangling leg. To me not a
penalty, but to use the old adage, you have made the referee
make a decision, so you have to deal with it.
To me VAR may work best being used even less - maybe just the
1-5 decisions a season that are WRONG (e.g the ghost goal,
Oxlade Chamberlain/Gibbs mistaken identity etc.) rather than for
each 'soft' penalty or possible handball which is still
subjective.

I am with you on this one adcr85. A good example of a recent
penalty award which was a clear and obvious error was at Crewe
last Saturday when David Rock awarded Cambridge a match winning
penalty when TV replays showed that Crewe defender Ng clearly
played the ball and never touched the Cambridge player. Another
that comes to mind was Deadman at Derby a few years back. To my
mind, that is the sort of penalty award that needs to be
overturned by VAR but of course we don't have such luxuries at
Gresty Road at the moment. Until we do, it might be useful for
the 4O to have access to some kind of immediate replay facility
as seems to have happened at Salford last night.

The biggest surprise for me was Slippy Shoes Salah not throwing
himself to earth within 5 metres of a covering defender to try
and redress the balance. Karma?

As well as its tautological failings, this "clear and obvious"
nonsense is just a mealy mouthed phrase used to cover up errors
by referees.
It wasn't a penalty. He gave a penalty. How much more clear and
obvious do they want it.
