David Rock, Crewe v Cambridge
DIR By: Acme Thunderer
Date: September 15, 2019, 11:09 am
---------------------------------------------------------
An early chance to see a 'newbie' at Gresty Road and all I can
say now is 'oh dear'!
David Rock is a small-ish fairly chunky individual and looks
quite a bit older than one might expect from a 'newbie'. A bit
akin to Moss, Rob Lewis or (looking further back) Steve Dunn.
From the start, mobility seemed to be a bit of an issue and,
quite often, David didn't seem to be particularly close to key
incidents. This applied in the first half with the sending off
of Crewe's Paul Green for a challenge in midfield. I've seen the
incident on Quest but can't make my mind up whether it was a
straight red card offence. Yellow bordering on red, so perhaps
David needs to be given the benefit of the doubt on this one
although it will be interesting to see whether any appeal is
lodged and with what result.
If the first half was largely uneventful, the second half was
most certainly not, with constant whistling, over-officious
refereeing, time wasting, play acting and frequent squabbles
much in evidence. I got the impression that David was rapidly
losing control and this was confirmed big time when he awarded
Cambridge their match winning (3-2) penalty. No way was it a
penalty with everyone in the ground bar Rock seeing Ng making a
clean tackle and getting the ball before the Cambridge player
went to the ground. The Quest highlights confirmed this and even
the TV pundits thought it was a duff decision. Crewe manager
David Artell, no stranger to trouble on the touchline, went
ballistic, and I think the 4O David Hunt acted very sensibly in
not taking action to have Rock come over and issue a red card.
The rest of the game was embarrassing with every foul committed
by Cambridge (and there were plenty of them) leading to the
crowd baying for red.
Artell has pointed out that the assessor for this game was
former PL ref Mike Jones, who must have made the short journey
from Chester to see David in action. I hope he will have some
strong words to say about this performance. I am all for
'newbies' coming to Gresty Road but this was not acceptable.

Having seen the penalty, both on normal speed replay and slow-mo
on the replay, it was an extraordinarily poor decision by Mr
Rock, who had a perfect view of the incident. I cannot comment
on the red card, as I am not entirely sure where contact was
made, so must give Mr Rock the benefit of the doubt.
I will see Mr Rock on Tuesday, and will pass judgement.
Hopefully it was an off day, and improves. Very mixed bag for
the new officials I have seen so far this season.

Not sure what Artell is on about, as the observer/assessor was
Alan Kaye.
Mike Jones was there as 'PGMOL Staff', whatever that means or
entails.

Presumably not running his eye over David Rock as an early
contender for SG1 :o

Any thoughts on what you saw of David at Crawley? Another late
penalty I hear which denied Plymouth a victory but perhaps not
such an obviously wrong decision as we saw at Gresty Road last
Saturday.

A much improved performance from Mr Rock. In fairness, it was an
easy game to referee but got the major decision correct. Just
the kind of game he needed after Saturday I think.

Thanks. Coincidentally another newbie with a chequered start -
Josh Smith - was in charge of Crewe's game at Leyton Orient on
Tuesday and I can find no criticism of his performance -
certainly not from David Artell - despite the fact that he
awarded a penalty against the Alex. Good to see these new refs
picking themselves up after poor starts.

That is good news. Josh Smith's performance in his league opener
has been well documented upon here but good to hear his
performances have picked up since then.
