Charlton vs Birmingham - Matt Donohue

Sad to say but he is the worst referee I have seen down the
valley in quite a while!!! Must point out first that we wouldn't
have scored had we played another 90 mins. However I have never
seen a referee lose control of a game as much as he did. Never
let the game flow and was poor for both teams. The part that
wound everyone up was in the 90th min when he went to show a
yellow card to someone in the Birmingham dugout. Everyone wanted
the game to keep moving but he took a whole minute to walk half
the pitch to booj their manager before sending off Lee Bowyer
who went ballistic at how long the referee was taking. He added
6 minutes at the end which was about right and took 3mi s of
that injury time to book their manager and only added an extra
30 seconds at the end. 2nd time he has refereed us this season
and both times he has been out of his depth and shocking!!

I only saw the highlights on Quest but the incidents at the end,
seemed to be something and nothing and probably could have been
dealt with more sensibly, without the use of cards.
According to the Birmingham manager, Donohue said he would
yellow card him if he didn’t tell him who threw the ball.
Strange if true!

Nothing strange about that. The Laws of the game require it from
this season: “Where an offence is committed and the offender
cannot be identified, the senior team coach present in the
technical area will receive the sanction.”
So, I suspect this is what was being pointed out to the
Birmingham manager, giving the opportunity to identify the
perpetrator.

Seems a bit harsh if the coach is unable rather than unwilling
to identify the offender. Imagine how many touchline bans Arene
Wenger might have served if this law had been present in his
heyday ???

Seems a bit harsh if the coach is unable rather than unwilling
to identify the offender. Imagine how many touchline bans Arene
Wenger might have served if this law had been present in his
heyday ???

Ha!
I think the theory is that the manager is ultimately responsible
for the conduct of their staff in the technical area so if there
is uncertainty then the manager takes the punishment.
I'm not sure if it is still the case but in the EFL last season
when it was introduced on a trial basis I remember it being said
that if the referee had to come across on separate occasions to
show yellow cards then the manager would be sent off because
they were aware that otherwise coaching staff might just take it
in turns to get yellow card offences.
I suppose this explains the delay in Donahue dealing with the
Birmingham manager and it sounds like he was correct, at least
from a technical perspective, in what he did.
On another note, has a manager been cautioned in a Premier
League game yet this season? I certainly don't remember one
being sent off.

I believe Guardiola has been booked, because I remember the
media coverage of "first manager ever to be carded", when that
was in fact Derek Adams and Chris Powell who were both sent off.

Guardiola was booked in the charity shield I believe. I think
Javi Gracia was booked when he was still in charge at Watford.

But the perpetrator was not a member of his own team. I can’t
believe the Law was intended to punish a coach for an offence
committed by the opposition. That was surely confirmed by the
fact the Charlton manager was sent off.

Someone from the Birmingham dugout threw a ball onto the pitch
to waste time. The offender couldn't be identified so the
Birmingham manager was shown the yellow card.
Lee Bowyer was sent off for a separate offence in how he
responded to the situation.

I am surprised that club's haven't got wise to this yet and made
sure they have someone on the bench who they can nominate to
receive a yellow card.
