After World War I, all European countries tried to break free of
what had become a dependency on imported oil from the Western
Hemisphere, especially the United States . As a result, at the
end of the war, the USParadoxically, it found itself in a
difficult situation, since its oil supply began to be limited by
its production capacity, while Great Britain and France had
established themselves in the Middle East, the region of the
world with the largest reserves of this hydrocarbon. This it set
in motion a complex set of geopolitical dynamics that explains
much of interwar European politics, including how the Nazis
reacted to the problem of Germany's exclusion from the Middle
East and the consequences of the lack of oil on their soil.
In my book, I describe the emergence, beginning India Email List

the late 1920s, of an
energy dependency of Western European countries on Soviet oil.
During the Cold War, although this dependency had become a taboo
subject,The US was not ready for Western European countries to
import oil from the Western Hemisphere again, because the
Americans themselves were very concerned about the
sustainability of their domestic supply. Consequently, European
countries had no choice but to concentrate their sourcing
efforts in the Middle East, which posed a real problem due to
the risk of geopolitical instability in the region.

As I explain in the book, the Suez Crisis [1956] was a decisive
geopolitical moment for the structuring of postwar energy
security in Western Europe. The British, French and Israeli
actions to ensure this security infuriated [Dwight] Eisenhower,
who did not want to give the impression that the US was opposing
Arab nationalism by supporting the European imperial powers.1.
It was in this context that the energy relationship between
Western Europe and the Soviet Union originated, based first on
oil in the 1950s and 1960s, and then on gas in the 1970s.
