An hour away from the brand’s

For an on-the-ground view at how this process works, we visited
the Rivian Service Center about only factory in Normal, Illinois
(and thousands of miles from corporate HQ in Irvine,
California). It took months of asking and multiple phone calls
to convince Rivian to let us inside. With what it has been
through since launch, that’s not surprising. But what I found
made it clear that the brand is indeed making uniquely
beautiful, high-tech vehicles for eager customers—even if some
first-time EV owners aren’t totally sure how they work.

       than a football field. Its
cold, modern exterior quickly melts away as soon as you enter
the waiting area—or customer "lounge"—where you're greeted by
books, puzzles for the kids, coffee, plants, and a trendy pastel
color scheme. On the Main Service Floor Rivian service center

clean floors, tall ceilings, and a quiet atmosphere. There is no
grease, and no dirty towels laying around. EV maintenance
doesn't involve oil changes (there is no gas engine), and the
most sophisticated EVs, like Rivians, also balance software
       fixes with traditional hardware tune-ups.

Technology has its tentacles in every part of the vehicle, which
dictates its handling, wheel height, battery performance, and
overall functioning. That means when a car comes into the shop
for service, the team runs a diagnostic test to determine if
it's a mechanical problem or software issue. For the latter, the
service center has an online ticketing and chat function to
connect with a software engineer who can fix the issue in that
specific vehicle. Rivian dash screen The dash screen and front

Dreibelbis) Maintenance also happens outside the shop via
over-the-air software updates and ongoing bug fixes. "Usually
when you buy a car a year later, it's more advanced than the
previous version, but all Rivians have the same software," says
Andrew Schamaun, a delivery mobile operations manager at the
service center. Rivian's last OTA update in 2022 contained 34
       updates.
