I've always pictured the New Jerusalem as a real city, as well
as a symbolic and spiritual reality. A beautiful city (not like
our cities) where nature is an intricate part of it, and all
people live in harmony, with no need for locks on doors or
fences to keep people out. Children and animals can wander with
no threat to them, because they are loved by all, known by all,
one collective, extended family. Libraries with all the best
books from our world (we'll read of our long-ago tribulations
and be reminded how blessed we are to be where we have come to
be), cafes with great food, parks, theater, museums and places
set up simply for the pleasure of learning. Perfect lighting as
God provides, no need for sleep, only quiet, contemplative rest.
No traffic, because we think of where we want to be and arrive.
Or we walk the old way, if we wish to experience along the way.
Places for the arts where people paint and dance and create.
A river flows through the city, crystal clear, trees on its
banks with every kind of healing fruit. It's warm and every
rain is gentle and life-giving. Colors we've never seen and
music that speaks to our soul. One soul, for we are all one.
Outside the city is every wonder. Wild places that offer no
threat, where we'll see animals peacefully grazing, side by
side, lions, zebras, horses, bears, deer-- space for all of
God's creatures, great and small, to live in peace. Birds fill
the air, and even the fish rise to greet us. No longer do the
animals run in fear as we approach, but they look up in
recognition, because they know us as we know them. Creeks flow
in melody, and even the rocks sing of the joy of all that is.
The mountains and plains and all vistas in the far distance
offer endless exploration of God's creative good. To see,
touch, smell, hear, and taste everything is a delight, and our
senses are greater, heightened, infinitely kinder.
There are no places of worship, because every breath of all that
lives is in constant praise and wonder of God who has brought us
back to His very heart. And, of course, we see Jesus, face to
face, we visit with His Mother and all the glorious saints of
old. Time never runs out, so there will always be tomorrow. We
can visit all the people we ever loved here on earth, and youth
is an eternal thing; no more sorrow, no more pain. Everyone
casts the light of God's glory, and there are countless new
relationships to be had, yet our most loved from old earth will
always be special to us, because they shared with us and helped
us through what once was, when we were the poor fallen children
       of Eve.
The heavens sing and we journey forth, but know we may always
return to the city of our Lord, to the vast and ever-changing
Kingdom of Light, of our God.
Yes, I believe the Kingdom is a place prepared by God for all
who love Him, as well as a people, prepared and made ready.
       How we yearn for home.
