Jesus also taught specifically about paying taxes to the
       government. See Matthew 22:17-21
       a) What did Jesus say when the Pharisees asked if it was lawful
       to pay taxes to Caesar?
       b) what do you think Jesus' statement means?

       a) Jesus saw their wicked hearts' intent to trap Jesus and
accuse Him of teaching that it was okay to not pay taxes.
Basically they wanted to dig up some dirt on him and accuse him
and possibly even turn Him over to the authorities. Jesus was a
thorn in their sides and they wanted to get rid of Him. Instead,
Jesus pointed out to them that Cesar's face was on the money
itself and therefore it belonged to him.
       b) In order to fully understand what Jesus was saying, we have
to read the previous verses to get some context. It is explained
that the pharisees wished to entangle Jesus in his own words and
manipulate Him into telling them what they wanted to hear so
they could justify not paying taxes and/or get Him on trouble
with the authorities for teaching that it was okay to not pay
taxes. The pharisees approached Jesus saying basically "Jesus,
we know that you are wise and only concerned with heavenly
things and therefore you aren't concerned with the conventions
       of men like taxes."
Therefore when Jesus said "Render to Caesar's the things that
are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's", I believe
He was telling them to pay the money that is owed to earthly
authorities. And to God, what is owed is a submissive heart. The
pharisees left Him and went on their way as they were unwilling
to submit their hearts and accept Jesus.
