People are moved and influenced to submit and obey both
extrinsically (fear of punishment) as well as intrinsically (the
reward that comes from submission is a clear conscience and
having a safe and peaceful society).
This concept applies to everything in life. For example, a
teacher uses both methods to maintain control in the classroom.
There is punishment for those who break rules put in place that
will disrupt the classroom. But ultimately, a good teacher will
instill an intrinsic desire in the heart of each student to help
contribute to an environment where they can learn. A love and
value of learning is the incentive and the goal.
