StarSwirl's Forbidden Literature

After making sure no one was in sight within the outskirts of
the forest near the town, Nova eagerly pulled off the metal
prongs which kept the book firmly shut. A shiver ran down her
spine as soon as she opened it, however the pegasus overlooked
it thinking it was just simply a chill in the air. Oddly enough,
for a book which had a spine thick enough to hold around five
hundred pages in it, it only had one page in it. Although it
didn't look like the rest of it had been ripped out or damaged
in any way. The page read:

1. Treat this book with love and care. Do not abandon it for
more than a day. Do this and all the knowledge and skills
relating to your special talent will be revealed in future
pages.
2. Whatever happens to this book will also happen to the First
Reader. Should it ever be mistreated the First Reader will
suffer ten-fold.
3. As rule two forewarns, never lock this book away after the
first reading, otherwise the First Reader will be locked in a
full-body paralysis until the book is free.
4. Place your hoof on the back of the front cover, within the
horse shoe grooves to accept these conditions and begin reading.
Nova looked at the back of the front cover where the hoof
engraving was. Without a second thought she placed her hoof onto
it and at that instant a wave of coldness shot throughout her
whole body. The pegasus shuddered and the cold feeling she felt
faded just as quickly as it appeared. She looked back at the
book's content, and now a second page had appeared behind the
first. It read:

5. Congratulations, First Reader, you now have access to any
skill you seek in relation to your cutie mark. The longer you
keep me, the book, safe, the more pages will be revealed in time
filled with the literature you require. Every page has a
circular emblem marked on the bottom-right corner, every time
you touch it you will acquire these skills on said pages
instantly.
6. You will notice that over time you will feel more lethargic
than usual, fear not it is simply the price to pay for instant
knowledge and skill. Skills take time to develop, so I will take
small portions of your life away from your expected life span.
7. Do not let anyone try to take this book away from you. Should
you and the book be separated for more than a day, the book will
feed off of your life span at a more rapid rate.
8. If you are a unicorn who is reading this book and have been
marked as the First Reader, I thank you for so graciously
sacrificing your life so willingly to benefit mine. While you
are connected with me as the First Reader, you will not see past
the first five pages of the knowledge you so desperately seek.
9. If you are a unicorn who is reading this book but you are not
the First Reader, I thank you for so graciously sacrificing all
your magical capabilities and sight for the duration that this
book has been stolen from or given up by the First Reader. I
will regrettably return the abilities I have stolen from you as
soon as I am returned to the First Reader.
10. I look forward to our first reading, First Reader.
(So essentially the book isn't actually living. It is like a
parasite, or plant, and the First Reader is its food. Oh dear,
what has Nova gotten herself into?)

Nova stared at the second page for a good long while. Feeling
rather uneasy about how unusual it was for her to take
unnecessary risks, especially when she was too over-confident by
the simple fact of not being a unicorn, she shouldn't be
affected by the book too much. Yes she knew that the book had
negative effects on unicorns, but she hadn't realized that the
book itself feeds on the life span of the beholder, no matter
what kind of pony. It's possible that it might affect other
beings, but it wasn't clearly stated in the rules since this
book was intentionally written for ponies.
Nova sighed, "Well, there is no going back now. Besides, Bolt
always said to bend the rules more, now and then." As she
flicked through the pages, the first question came to mind was
how to create her own dragon magic. As if on cue, a third page
sprouted from the spine behind the rules. Nova read through it,
engrossed by the details, though completely oblivious to the
dark strings of magic involved. Once she finished, the pegasus
touched the circular emblem on the page's corner. At that
second, the pony convulsed briefly, feeling a strong wave of
coldness over her in the process. The icy feeling left her as
quickly as it had come and afterwards she felt as healthy as she
had ever felt; nor had she felt her mind change perspective on
things or altered in any way. The only difference she noticed
now was that her cutie mark had turned jet-black, occasionally
sparking small zaps of dark matter from it. The following line
appeared at the bottom of the page:

Congratulations, First Reader, you have now acquired the ability
of generating magic sourced from Shade Dragons.[/center]
To test this new ability, Nova spoke a riddle in Dragon Tongue
she had always found to be quite a tongue-twister and often had
a sore throat after attempting it. This time however, she spoke
it as easily and fluently as she did in Pony. The pegasus
blinked, rather surprised. She picked up the book and quickly
flew into town, back to her house, leapt through the back
window, up the stairs to her room, grabbed her favourite book
from the shelf, ripped the cover off and fastened it over
forbidden book she now possessed. So now, it looks as though
she's carrying around an ordinary book on dragon ethology,
without looking suspicious or out of place.
The pegasus left her home and trotted through town with the book
under her wing, seeing if she would find any pony to talk to.
Before long, she started to worry about the whereabouts of
Silver Bolt, seeing as she hasn't seen him since their fight.

Fox is walking through town when he spots Nova, he walks over to
her a smile on his face "So, did you hear the news" he said
happily

"Oh, I made sure she was rather annoyed" he said smiling "But
that's not the news, I have heard through the grape vine that
Celestia thinks that Bolt is me, or rather, that Bolt is The
Silver Phantom. Quite ridiculous, as if that simpleton could do
half the things I do"

"Bolt is - what!" Nova exclaimed, so much so that she dropped
the newly covered book from under her wing. The book hit the
ground, leaving a small, minor dent on the spine. As a reaction,
Nova cringed, feeling a sharp pain in her back; the pegasus
picked up the book carefully and held it under her wing again.
"You're kidding, oh shi't... this is my fault." she exclaimed
with wide eyes. She began pacing back and forth, "This is
really, really bad. How in the world did he get mistaken for
you! I'm sorry but HOW! The last thing Bolt is, is being
stealthy, let alone being anywhere involved with a heist."
She then turned to Silver Fox, "Please, you have got to help me
get him out some how. Please." she said, almost to a point of
begging with pleading eyes, "I'll even pay you for your trouble,
since after all I know you two don't exactly see eye-to-eye...
what do you want for it?"

"Don't see eye to eye? He is constantly attacking me, and I'm
fairly sure he has tried to kill me more than once, I have tried
to be civil but it's like he has something against me, and he
goes off his nut everytime I'm near you, it's like he thinks I'm
going to try and steal you or something. Helping him is not
something that would come naturally"

"Please Fox, if you won't do it for him, then do it for me. If
not for me, do it for yourself. Think about it, do you really
want ponies to think of a blue dragon whenever whispers of the
Silver Phantom are heard? Wasn't the idea of all that being a
mystery, and how Celestia lost her composure every time she
couldn't catch you, All your hard work glorified in the papers
will have Bolt's face plastered all over it."

"If they think it's a dragon then all the better, I can do
whatever I want, and besides, I can't wait to see Celestia's
face when she realizes I'm still doing what I do, especially now
I'm 'in jail' it'll drive her mad" he says the last few words
with an almost childlike glee

"Well, then perform another heist then. At least when it happens
they will realize it's not Bolt and then he can go." she still
pleaded, "If you won't help me then..." she gulped, "I'll have
to get him out myself." Nova added, sounding really unsure of
herself.
