There should definitely be Items in the game. Simpel things like
HP Potions, potions to refill AP
HP -
Food
Potion
Meat
AP -
Berries
Veggies
Fruit
stuff like this^

Different Poketmon should need different foods for health. Like,
dog type should need meat and a deer type should need berries or
plants.

Im not sure if I am going to go with actual animals or just made
up monsters. Any suggestions?

no animals, would be very wierd XD
just make up some, maybe be similar looking to animals but
they'll have magical powers like fire balls and stuff
maybe make names that end in -oid like Devastoid, Pyroid and
such
and my fave lol Psychoid XD

Definitely not animals lmao. Unless you're making happy tree
friends the game haha.
But yea some of them could maybe resemble animals, and some be
made up.

Yeah basic potions are good or something similar, items based on
the monster type are optional but can be alittle inconvienent to
players so it's generally a good idea to stick with a universal
portable healing source, heck you could even just name it that.
The UPHD universal poketmon healing device.
