Hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm. After
each contraction, the vocal cords snap together causing the
"hiccup" sound

To get rid of hiccups, you have to interrupt the rhythm of the
contractions/spasms. That is why holding your breath is the most
effective method

Hiccups can be caused by an overdistended stomach, nerve spasms,
gastric irritation most likely from eating a large meal,
drinking alcoholic or carbonated beverages, sudden excitement,
or emotional stress.

I believe an over distended stomach is bloated and/or swollen.
I'm not a doctor so don't hold me to that but that is what I
gathered

Severe long cases of hiccups can be treated by nerve blocks or
by surgically cutting the nerve to the diaphragm

If hiccups last more than 48 hours, it may be a sign of nerve
damage or irritation, a central nervous system disorder, a
metabolic disorder or even drugs.
The factors for nerve damage or irritation are a hair or a
similar item touching your eardrum, sore throat, laryngitis,
tumor or cyst in neck, gastro esophageal reflux.
The factors for central nervous system disorders are stroke,
multiple sclerosis, tumors, meningitis, encephalitis, or
traumatic brain injury
The factors for metabolic disorders and drugs are alcoholism,
anesthesia, barbiturates, diabetes, electrolyte imbalance,
kidney failure, steroids or tranquilizers
