       Horne, Hertz, Jones and O'Doyle
Things are caught up in the rescue mission till mid-month.
       Hertz
During your absence an explosion damages the Shavian Holding
Facility, sparking a minor riot and an exodus of Shavians from
       government control.
       World Events
A number of bloody and brutal assassinations take place in
Russia, these match the modus operandi of enemy action in
       Vietnam.

       February
       World Events
Vietnam pushes into Laos with brutal metahuman action. The
United State's entrance is slowed when a number of pro-war
senators die in the same manner as the recent Russian political
deaths (that is to say, compacted into their skulls).
       Hertz
You are enlisted to help provide increased security in DC,
because the method of the assaulting power is unknown the task
is too vague to be readily actionable, but the insistence on
some kind of tangible result keeps you from fully focusing on
       your main work.
Several senators confess to an asian looking man talking to them
in their own homes, though no one ever sees him come or go. He
apparently makes threats not only to senators, but to their
family. His threats are often specific, and to be triggered by
specific action, rather than trying to enforce broader and less
reasonable goals like the end of the war altogether.
       Weeks
SuperHealthScreen!(TM) is finally put on the market (though most
of the first production run is given to African nations,
       starting with Zaire).
       Horne, O'Doyle, 'James'
Battle twisters in Mississippi. James takes the Cerberus card.
A basic background check suggests that James is in fact James
Closterman, a man presently on the FBI's Most Wanted List. His
criminal record starts with him allegedly accepting bribes while
serving as a police officer in Oklahoma City. It escalates
quickly from there as he resisted arrest and fought with the
police that came after him. So far no deaths are on his record,
but more than a few injuries.
Hertz's assistance in research yields that Closterman is
suspected of a number of crimes, including illegally killing
Jarvis West on foreign soil and using his powers to rob armored
cars (the specific incidents involve the cars being destroyed
and ripped open and the money flying off to places unknown).
       Jones
The feds visit the archeologist to warn him about using his
power in a city larger than its range. They make a point of
quoting the enormous numbers done in civic damages. They also
make it clear that they know what he's doing, but choose not to
       act on it.

       Jones, Hertz, Horne, LBJ
A massive protest is stopped by the president. Those reviewing
the footage of what happened start hitting upon LBJ using some
form of mass hypnosis, and a great debate begins as to what
       exactly is happening.

       Still April...
       Charles Manson
Charles Manson is sentenced to death. Despite early speculation,
the court rules his crimes did not use Metahuman abilities to
commit his crimes. A few days later the members of the 'Manson
Family' are also sentenced to death.
       Sri Lanka
A communist rebellion by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna begins.
       The People's Republic of Bangladesh
Founded on April 17th, the new government is forced to flee to
India two days later. A small cadre of Bengali metahumans strike
hard against Pakistani forces. Most public among them is a man
known as the Physicist, wearing a costume based around the
Bangladeshi flag (a green outfit with a red circle on his chest,
and a yellow map of the nation inside the circle).
       USA
Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education: the US
Supreme Court rules in favor of the forced integration of
       schools by bussing.
       Hoffman
Hoffman hands himself in to the DC police almost immediately
after the affair with Tuong. He walks into the police office and
requests they put him under protective custody, as he believes
the FBI, CIA, 'or one of el presidente's other assassins' may
soon be after him. He also informs several friends and media
outlets of the same thing, drawing large public attention.
While in custody he is charged arrested under suspicion of
kidnapping, aiding and abetting an escape from authorities, and
obstructing justice. Potential charges of being an unlawful
combatant and flat out treason are considered by the
prosecution, but not pursued seriously (As much as Hoover would
love to nail Hoffman, these charges would bring the entire
questionably legal effort to capture Tuong into question. After
all, if Hoffman was an unlawful combatant brought in by Hertz's
crew, then what would that say about Hertz?). Hoffman expresses
public disappointment that he isn't being tried for treason, and
       acts as his own defense.
Hoffman's mastery of the theatric soon turns the entire trial
into a media circus, and the prosecution struggles to reign it
in. When the subject matter at hand is extremely sensitive,
Hoffman pushes it further. He does no deny using a mind
affecting power on Vo at the crucial moment ("Hey, if it's good
enough for the president, who am I to argue?"), and explains
under oath that all the power does is cause an overwhelming
desire in the target to act in accordance with their own
beliefs, not his. All he did was help Vo do what she wanted.
None of that, however, is the crux of his argument. No, Hoffman
argues that interfering with the capture of Truc Dac Kien was
itself illegal, making his actions the self-defense of another.
To support this claim, he calls in a parade of expert witnesses
to testify about the United States' treatment of Prisoners of
War... and of disappeared individuals. The Tiger Cages of Côn
Sơn are only the start. The trial quickly becomes an
inditement not of Hoffman, but of the treatment of POWs by
American and South Vietnamese forces. He takes the argument even
further when he calls on John White and other specialists who
testify against the legality of the war as a whole.
And, through it all, Hoffman gladly accepts that if use of his
mind altering power is to be made retroactively illegal, he'll
gladly spend those years in jail if it means watching LBJ put to
       death.
Drs. Hertz, Horne and Jones are called in as witnesses by the
prosecution, mostly to go over the finer details of what
actually transpired. Their testimonies are not open to the
general public as the mission may contain 'state secrets'. After
some consideration, the prosecution also attempts to reach
Captain O'Doyle and request he take the stand.
(Space is left before concluding this for the players to come up
with a potential response. The prosecution is honestly
struggling against Hoffman's incisive and undermining tactics)

Hertz does very little in this trial except tell the truth of
each member's involvement in the extraction of the Monument. The
only edge to he puts on any of his testimonies is to hint that
mind control is terrible and should be made illegal. However, it
should be noted that the grandfather clause should be observed.
Giving both Hoffman and Johnson a pass.

       Hoffman
The trial ends with Hoffman found innocent. The judge's
summation includes a few choice terms including, "It is the view
of this court that Hoffman, whatever his personal qualities, has
acted in the best tradition of civil disobedience towards a
       government working beyond it's station."
Of course, Hoffman also manages to get fined for contempt of
court along the way. He really needs to stop offering judges
       LSD.
       Criminal
News gets out that the FBI is hunting a serial metahuman rapist.
They seem to be a few months behind, as the main evidence the
metahuman criminal even exists is a remarkable series of
pregnancies from women across the midwest who have no memory of
the conception event. Several of the women were also using
various forms of birth control, including the much lauded pill.
The running theory is that the women have been raped by a
metahuman with some kind of power to make them forget
       afterwards.
The idea of a metahuman passing on genetics without sex is also
passed around, but it's buried under flashier headlines.
Considering that the earliest victims have given birth, the FBI
is way behind. The children do bare what many consider a
familial likeness... more to the point they're black. Naturally
the growing National KKK is insistent on bringing this rapist to
justice (when pressed the new Grand Wizard said, "Justice both
mortal and divine shall come to this villain, and we shall do
all we can to assist the proper authorities"). Metavictims
Advocacy and Support has also put a reward for information on
       the criminal.
Of course, there are the other cases of spontaneous pregnancies
back East. They go back slightly further and are slightly
weirder, as the infants born seem to white almost to the point
of albinism and, while sharing traits with each other, seem to
not share traits with their own mothers. Their mothers, to a
one, had visions of angels speaking to them shortly before the
pregnancy began. Some think this is the same thing as the rapist
in the midwest... but others think this may be a genuine
miracle. They seem to be concentrated in New York, but the
       incidents have been moving South.
       Weird
Strange semi-transparent pinkish-red blobs have been sighted
flying around the Northeastern United States. Witnesses claim
that they have small feathered wings that they use to fly
around, and when one gets close they can see a strange tailed
humanoid, smaller than an newborn infant, floating serenely
inside the gooey substance. The things apparently always keep
their eyes closed and do not speak. Witnesses claim to have
found them circling over infants, or else tickling or playing
with them. Then they seem to move on. Several report sick
children suddenly healthy and happy afterwards, and one late
shift nurse claims to have seen a pair of them move through the
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, just before all the infants were
       miraculously cured.
Despite some conjecture in tabloids of aliens when early
pictures of the blobs are taken, when one is taken close enough
to show the thing inside it is unmistakably to anyone with a
suitable medical background that the thing inside is a human
       fetus.
       Culture
All Things Considered airs its first episode on the 3rd.
       Deionne Bright
Deionne Bright begins performing a 3 hour guitar solo he calls
"Soul Survivor" on a custom made guitar, supposedly devised by
him. It's a fantastically complex song on a fantastically
complex instrument, and those who hear it universally describe
it like a religious experience, prompting some to call Bright a
saint or prophet (Bright's response: "I think I know more of sin
than sainting, you know? Just one sinner telling his story.").
Bright refuses to record the song, as he thinks records don't
capture it right. Worse, he believes it really requires the full
3 hour sit, uninterrupted, and LPs don't go that long. Switching
       discs would ruin the motion.
Even those not fond of Rock and Roll who hear the piece refer to
it as perhaps the greatest musical composition ever created.
Those few people aware of syntergenes have perked up somewhat at
       the descriptions.
Bright also attends Mick Jagger and Bianca de Macías. His +1 is
a relatively unknown metahuman identified as Beatrice Rollins.
       Space Race
After Mariner 8 fails to launch, the USSR beats America to
successfully launching a space probe with Mars 2.
       Howard "Reddy" March
After his lawyer's appeal to speak privately, face to face with
his client is met, the two vanish without a trace.
       Atlantis
Carlos Moses secures an agreement to supply the USA with raw
materials in exchange for an increase in necessity imports to
Atlantis. The USSR puts more ships around the island, but rumors
are Moses is trying to negotiate with them as well.
       Turkey
A mysterious pair of metahumans, believed to come out of India,
assist with relief efforts in Burdur after the city is
devastated by an Earthquake. The survivors talk with a mix of
gratitude, fear and awe of a tiger-headed many armed man and a
woman who seemed made of shadows.
The pair arrive again while the Bingöl earthquake is in
progress, and manage to save several hundred people between
       them.
The Turkish Liberation Army kidnap Israeli Ambassador Efraim
Elrom. Turkey responds by sending in a metahuman, who is gunned
down before Efraim Elrom is executed. The metahuman is later
believed to have gained powers at Burdur only days earlier and
       was completely untrained and untested.
       Boeing
Thanks to an innovative design by a young aeronautical engineer,
Boeing manages to continue with their Supersonic Transport
project, having created a plane design that greatly reduces the
       sonic boom.
       LBJ
With everything falling apart, the president has a quiet meeting
with Dr. Hertz. See Roleplaying for more.
       O'Doyle Family
A minor news story about imploding sheep makes big headlines
after people realize that Captain Australia's grandparents own
the animals. Not a single sheep of theirs survived a strange
       outbreak of... well, implosions.
Both Lauren and John O'Doyle seem extremely distressed about
this event... not to mention it being the ruin of their
       livelihood.
       Kells
O'Doyle is given coordinates to her location, along with actual
permission to visit. Hop on over to Roleplaying.

       June
       Law
Hoffman appears before Congress. Not by bursting in as
originally planned, but invited after testimony from his trial
is pointed to as evidence he has anti-mind control power. He
uses the power are members of Congress, and then speaks vocally
and powerfully on the subject of freedom, before being dragged
out by security when no one can get him to stop.
The description he provides of the vast array of things his
power works on, ranging from direct mind control to careful
manipulation, to carefully constructed 'syntergenes' (a word
that appears in a few notable papers, mostly researched by Very
Us Industries under their Around the Corner branch), helps
provide a context for just how far reaching and nunaced mind
affecting powers can be. He also tells them that LBJ has such
powers, and has probably used them on members of Congress. After
being hit by his Mind Freeing power, several members of Congress
attest with certainty that LBJ did something to their minds.
Then Congress listens to the testimony of victims of Jarvis
West. One of the highlights is Dr. Horne himself, relating the
story of how he was forced to kill a patient to the world. Video
footage of the hearing inevitably shows the moment when the man
with glowing purple eyes chokes up and has to collect himself.
Not long after this, Congress begins work on “The Federal
Cognitive Sovereignty Act.” Unlike previous bills of the kind
that have dragged on in the legislative process, this Act is
passed within two weeks. It outlaws "alteration of
consciousness, morals, beliefs, behavior or intent via dark
energy”, as well as passing a ban on studying of syntergenic
       science.
       Vietnam
While the phrase Progressive Harmony has been on the tongue of
Bao for months, exactly what it is finally becomes available to
the public. A book, translated as "Social Harmony and Social
Dissonance", puts forward the core principles of Progressive
Harmony to the public, and the world. It heavily uses musical
       metaphor.
The book reads like a pragmatist's version of Confucius's ideal
society. Everyone in the place that makes them happy, a caste
system designed to divide people into useful niches that fulfill
varied psychological needs. It's an impressive work with very
compelling arguments and rhetoric, all written very accessibly.
North Vietnamese officials tour the region giving readings in
public places to the illiterate masses, backed by stirring
       music.
The New York Times gets ahold of and starts publishing the
infamous Pentagon Papers, demonstrating the overextension of the
war, the administrations consistent lying about operations, and
other acts of corruption. The Supreme Court upholds their right
       to continue publishing.
       Alcatraz
Indians of All Tribes find an unlikely ally when several of
their people are saved from a fire on Alcatraz by a teleporter
later identified as Vo Ngoc. She bolsters their supplies,
assists in getting people off and onto the island, and tells
them to not let the government tell them what to do before
       vanishing again.
Vo's intermittent pressence prolongs the occupation.
       Berlin
An American metahuman attempts to break down the Berlin Wall
with brute force. He is taken down by East German soldiers
wielding foam based non-lethal weapons clearly derived of
Hertz's design, and is taken under arrest across the border.
Fearing the potential of this metahuman spreading powers to
soviet agents, the United States begins negotiating his return
       immediately.
       Jim Morrison
After a very drunk night with some friends, including Deionne
Bright, Jim Morrison abandons his plans to go to Paris and goes
instead to New Mexico where he engages in a self-described
'vision quest', and has not been seen since.
       Duarte, California
Hughes Airwest Flight 706 collides in mid-air with a Marine
Corps plane. Despite the efforts of a local flying metahuman,
only six people survive the plane crash.
The metahuman is later identified as Patrick Wallace.

       The Rest of July
       The Jone's Residence
Paramedics and police arrived at the Jone's farmhouse to find it
on fire, and two badly injured men inside. By some miracle, both
of them survived, though one was heavily brain damaged by a
bullet in his head. They were arrested, and with Jones's
testimony, their trial was brief before they were arrested. The
man who wasn't drooling full time made a plea-bargain, admitting
and confessing he'd been hired by a mysterious metahuman man, of
apparently asian origin, who arranged the group.
The man, Frank Ernest, is a veteran from Vietnam who was sent
home after losing a leg when the blood in it was boiled till the
whole flesh of it fell off during a fight with a metahuman. The
other man is identified as Howard Mars, Ernest's brother in law
       and an avid hunter.
Emanuel Johnson has a long list of priors, but he was long gone
by the time the ambulances, firetrucks and police cars arrived.
So was the woman, still unidentified.
When Jones searches the scene with his retro-vision, the woman
has her face covered in a makeshift mask and has her face
painted. Her skin is dark. Either she has one Hell of a tan, or
she's got some non-white blood in her. Native American?
       Mediterranean? Hispanic? Mulato? Can't tell.
Jones's family is put into protective custody, though there's
some question as to how much protection they can give.
This is made worse when Rebeccah Myers (who, you may remember,
Jones has been dating) sees her roommate implode into her own
skull and she swears up and down that an honest to God monster
(she refers to it looking like a series of human corpses twisted
round into a wheel, with horrific black wings made of metal
shards) materialized out of thin air to tell her and told her:
"Tell Dr. Montgomery Jones he will kill himself. It is only a
question of how many people will die before he does."
