Re: Resurrection

"I'm sorry," Smith says, a look of genuine contrition on his
face, "I don't mean to sound ungrateful, or anything. I mean,
I'm glad I'm not dead. I just... I mean, if I'm a copy, then I'm
actually still dead, right? I mean..." he trails off. "I'm
sorry. Thank you for, uh, bringing me back."
He follows Hertz without saying more, and Elijah, contrary to
Hertz's request, continues to follow as well. It has fallen
silent, but is observing closely.

Once Hertz has Smith sitting and comfortable he forms a stool
for the Puppet to sit on so that he's eye level with Smith. "I
appreciate it, Sergeant. I'm not here to be worshiped or
anything like that, but we did spend a lot of time and resources
on this project." Hertz lets that sit and sink in for a second
before starting his explanations. Hertz recounts to Sergeant
Smith everything of significance that had occurred to him since
he lost consciousness in Vietnam and died. Then the topic of the
replication process comes up and Hertz starts talking to Smith
more directly.
"In regards to the idea that you are copy of your former self, I
will point something out; every cell in your body copies itself
and dies off at some point in your life, even your bones. In
this way, you've actually been a copy of yourself since before
you were born. What we did was almost identical to that very
ubiquitous and normal cycle, but with some small twists. Through
very considerable efforts we managed to learn your active
chemical state so that we could ensure continuous consciousness.
The chemicals we use are identical to the ones everyone's bodies
use and the processes were identical. If it also makes you feel
better, you still have small parts of your tissues that are
continuous from your previous 'body'." Hertz explains calmly.

Smith nods and listens as Hertz explains the situation. He seems
perturbed by the thought of the amount of time that's passed, as
much as anything else, but is grateful to hear his squad made it
out alright.
After Hertz is done his reassurances, Smith pauses a bit and
makes a few faces as he considers something. Then, he spits it
out.
"Uh... Okay, doctor, but... I mean," he's blushing slightly, as
though embarrassed, "I mean, it's just that... well, what about
my soul? I mean, I wasn't the best Christian in the world, but
there's more to life than just the body, right?"

Tactfulness will reward us
He is blinded by faith
Yes, but kindness will do more for the project
Willingness it's indeed key to the endeavor
Religion is the cause of many woes in the world
Elimination of faith is beyond ethical consideration
Is it ethical to let barbarism continue
What is David doing right now
Ignorance breeds violence
The endeavours require assistance
Proof is needed
Psychological considerations are Paramount for this man
A soul is merely a stone age definition of the self
I'm hungry
Rita should make lasagna tonight
Acidity is too high
Perhaps salmon steaks with greens
Should we have a family vacation with Sara and the boys
Lake Placid is nice this time of year
He will accept no answer without theological consideration
Processing...
pruning options...
Agreed
These thoughts run through the swarm that is Hertz nearly
instantaneously.
He smiles at Smith and pats his shoulder. "Where do you think
souls come from? If what I said is true, then why doesn't your
soul come away with your old skin? Maybe souls deteriorate, are
shed and then we grow, get, or earn new ones. After all, people
change as they go through life. Wouldn't it make sense that the
soul becomes different in some way as well?"

Smith shifts uncomfortably as he thinks for a little while.
"I guess so," he says at last. He doesn't sound too convinced.
Then again, he doesn't sound like he knew what to think to start
with. Maybe this is as good as any.
I gotta ask, though," he says, "Why me? Is this... is this just
because I got powers?"

"Yes... and no." Hertz says bluntly. "I won't lie about this."
Hertz has the Puppet sigh and look down at its notes. "Both this
project and you represent significant investment in time, skill,
and resources for the United States. I don't want to put a lot
on your shoulders, but the military would probably not have
given me the resources to complete this effort if you hadn't
been an incredibly convenient subject." Hertz pauses for a
moment, this was honestly not his forte. He wasn't a wet blanket
at parties, but he definitely wasn't very interested in cajoling
this man out of his self concerned paranoia. "I guess you could
say that you're lucky in a way. We can't spend all our time
worrying about the minute circumstances as to how you are alive
right now." Hertz reaches forward and flicks Smith's knee with
the Puppet's middle finger. "I understand that this is very
unique situation, but the best thing is to move forward." Hertz
writes a note in the notebook about his reflexes, which was
completely useless for the medical information, but it was
designed to alleviate and distract Smith into assuming the
passive patient role that would allow Hertz to finish analyzing
him.

Smith nods. He remains contemplative through the rest of the
tests, but has picked up on Hertz's desire to not go there.
The tests come back clean. Smith seems to be fine. Functioning
mentally, physically fit.
The only problem is that the bees don't seem to have any
interest in him. He doesn't seem to have any ability to use Dark
Energy. He claims he can't feel it anymore, and that when he
tries to use it, it's just not there anymore.
"Sorry, doctor," he says, "I think I came back normal."

After the tests are over, Hertz offers Sergeant Smith the run of
the Citadel. He shows him a few of the projects they're working
on. He brings Smith to the eight different bio-domes that are
under construction. All the while bringing him up to date with
as much pertinent information about the world since since he
went down.
After that rather long walk (something Hertz uses to stress test
the body a little bit), Hertz shows Smith to the recreational
center and lounge. He tells him that food is in the cafeteria,
which he can follow the blue stripe along the floor to find.
Hertz asks Smith not to drink anything alcoholic just to be sure
no unknown interactions might occur. The doctor then tells Smith
Once where the room he'll be sleeping in is and tells him that a
sleep study will done on him.
Once Hertz gets an assistant to watch Smith and to record
anything Elijah says to him Hertz heads out and flies home. He
comes into the house and finds Rita. "Hey, I was wondering if
you wanted to go out somewhere tonight? Pick anywhere in the
world, just don't break the bank. I need a night out. I didn't
get some good news I was hoping for today."

OOC
He cures death... and then gets upset.
I will point out, exhuming the corpse may be easier if you have
the dead man's permission. At least, if you can sort out the
legalities of him being him.
IC
As fascinating as the projects are, Smith seems to have little
interest in them. He's impressed, sure enough, but with that
frustrating 'seen it all before' manner Hertz has seen other
metahumans fresh from combat have. When given free reign, he
makes his way pretty quickly to the other soldiers.
Hertz later hears about Smith and Gonzalez swapping war stories
on a hangar roof. His assistant also records Elijah's questions,
and they're an odd set. A lot concerning what the man remembers
of having died. Smith doesn't even answer half the questions.
Ms. Rollins ends up being the one to shoo Elijah away. Reports
aren't clear on which Ms. Rollins, but the system for
differentiating them have never been perfect, except for the
Prime (or Alpha, or whichever term you like). Prime herself did
show up, and start talking to him about his situation, and legal
standing. She's the first person to whom Smith makes a request
to talk to his family.
Rita, for her part, smiles when Hertz appears and listens.
"Would you prefer old and comforting or new and exciting," Rita
says, with a smile.

OOC
Yep!
Although it has more to do with his theories on what dark energy
attaches to and uses. It proves that dark energy is either
imbued into the physical material of the Meta which then
replicates with the body's natural mitotic processes and also
has some kind of critical mass saturation point in order to be
active or there is an, as of yet, undetectable quality humans
have that dark energy resides within that is innate to the human
concept of a 'body'. One is an easy fix, but irritating. The
other has complication attached to it that people could use
evidence to confirm the existence of a soul. Something Hertz
sees as inherent indication of a lack of determinism. Without
determinism, the evils that man does to itself and the world
cannot be explained as natural products of a predictable
universe, but a cruel choice that is completely within our
control as individuals which enables moral and ethical judgments
to be true absolutes. This then means that Wallmand has the
ethical responsibility to eliminate the German culture because
they were responsible for the Holocaust.
IC
"I could do French." He answers her question.
