Resurrection
By: insert name Date: July 10, 2017, 11:26 am
---------------------------------------------------------
March 18th, 1970
Timothy Smith comes back from the dead.
The first to know is Elijah. Elijah had been waiting, silently
staring, for months. There is a gap of unclear time in which
Elijah and Timothy Smith are alone. Timothy thinks it was about
an hour.
The second to know is Specialist Richard Salmon, who reports it
immediately.
Dr. Hertz is present within the next half hour, having to put
aside a delicate task with undue haste.
When Dr. Hertz arrives, Sgt. Smith is leaning on the tank he
grew in. Elijah is floating just below his head level. It
appears Specialist Salmon provided Smith with a medical gown.

The Puppet appears in the room a few feet away and picks a
notebook. "Sergeant Smith, how are you feeling?" Hertz asks as
the Puppet walks towards him. "Please, come sit here and don't
attempt anything strenuous. You are very new. We have tried to
incorporate your previous body's physical stress resistances,
but we are still perfecting the process." Hertz places the
Puppet's hand on the base of Smith's back and prods him towards
a nearby medical table that was prepared recently for this
revival.
Meanwhile, Hertz's cells attempt to enter Smith and analyze his
body. Noting that nothing should be amiss, given that he's been
checking in on the growing body of Smith at least twice a day
for the last nine months. Given that the body has been fully
functional since January, but the complete hormonal and
neurological state copying took the remaining three months.
Therefore, a psychological evaluation was actually the most
pertinent investigation Hertz could do at this point.

"Confused, mostly," Sgt. Smith says. "I seem to recall getting
killed, and now I'm here... wherever here is. And," he looks at
Elijah, "If I understand this... uh... thing right, I'm not even
me. You, uh, copied my corpse? So... I'm actually dead out there
somewhere?" The tension and confusion in his voice is obvious.

Internal body seems to be consistent. Nothing's been abruptly
altered or changed, which is good. No obvious signs of Dark
Energy actively changing his body, but that's rare across the
board.
A psych exam is important, but Elijah is following after Smith
as Dr. Hertz leads him away. Hertz needs Smith in isolation to
do this properly, but the homunculus seems to have no desire to
leave them be.

<"Elijah, could you gather the material from tank B, I would
like it properly contained now that it is no longer being used
for the moment. I'm sure that many more mystery still reside in
those pieces."> Hertz asks the creature in yiddish, referring to
the actual remains of Sargeant Smith which have been kept in
preservation liquids inside distinct organic sacks within the
bioreactor. <"If he does not display meta-capabilities, then we
shall attempt revivification of the materials.">
The Puppet looks at Smith, "Well, yes. You did die. I'm going to
make no bones about that. But people die on the operating table,
or in car crashes, or even in drug overdoses. Yet they continue
living today. I saved you from that oblivion, does it matter
how?" Hertz's voice is calm and level, his question is neither
irate nor pressuring.

<"I wish to see the results of our labors in action as surely as
you do."> Hertz might object to how much Elijah really helped
with the project, he's fairly certain his intellect sufficed,
but it is undeniable Elijah has been present and working with
him for this whole project.
"Okay, talking to..." Smith once again falters on a word for
Elijah, "Talking in German while I'm standing here isn't exactly
polite, doc. Something I should know?"

"Do they really?" Smith asks, "I mean, you hear stories about
people being dead for a few minutes, but I didn't think that was
literal. And, I mean, it might matter if I'm buried somewhere.
Especially to those who buried me."
OOC
Sorry, are you indicating tank B contains Smith's actual
remains? Because, I'll remind you, part of the reason they
okayed the copying was so they could return the remains for
burial.

OOC
Honestly, Hertz probably mocked up some body parts to look like
Smith's body if he had to. Or he's just been dragging his feet
and using bureaucratic red tape to slow the transfer down so
he'd still have the body. Probably the latter, since the first
is very unethical. I can't imagine someone with a ton of
authority is going to insist to him that much.
IC
"Would you like to hear me telling him how to clean the rest of
you from the tank? Because I could go into more detail." The
words 'confusion, disorientation, potential paranoia exhibited'
are scribbled onto the notepad. 'Partial sedation maybe required
in follow up cases' follow close behind the first. Hertz then
addresses Elijah, "You have had at least one hour some with him.
I wish for the same. Besides, the project is not done yet. There
will be more in the future." This time in English.
Turning back to Smith, Hertz offers the Puppet's hand to him.
"Congratulations on being the first man to completely come back
from brain death Sargeant Smith. While you are right about those
people not really being dead, you were. Now, you're back. You'd
think a man would be more appreciative to not be dead." Hertz
chuckles and glances at his assistant with a shrug. "I'm not
trying to make you feel guilty, Sargeant, but you basically just
turned to a midwife after delivering your child and demanded to
know why they're not swaddling the placenta."

Sorry to sidetrack, but would Hertz really have falsified the
corpse? Because, again, there was a lot of pressure to get
Smith's body back home to his mourning family.

Probably not, he'd probably go the redtape route and slow the
return process down long enough to do what he wants. Doing it
legally, but with as much control as he could manage. Delays,
permits, and paperwork are probably his primary tools. I could
make a Mind roll for it.

OOC
Actually, the roll should be Charm+Lie, since you're trying to
throw up obstacles and block and contrive reasons to keep the
body. (I thought maybe Command+Leadership, but Leadership
doesn't include the bureaucratic stuff it usually does, and
Charm does cover handling diplomacy and bureaucracy).
Since you have 0 chance of failing the Mind roll, I'll let that
provide you a +2 Tool bonus as you manipulate the system with
it.
However, given the amount of time you want to keep the body and
the urgency that its return is wanted, I'll warn you the roll
has a difficulty.

I can't believe I failed that. Oh well, I guess he fails after a
lot of arguing. So just a minor retcon saying that the stuff in
tank B is just leftovers or unused cellular lineages.
By the way. Auto correct corrected 'or' to 'out' that one post.
This shit can really screw with intent.
