       Old Friends: Captain O'Doyle
By: insert name Date: June 30, 2017, 12:04 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Lt. Samuel Horace gets two beers out of the fridge, grasping the
necks in one hand. He hands one to Captain O'Doyle. Then he sets
his down on the table and opens it with a simple bottle opener.
       He's adjusting well.
Lt. Horace didn't lose his left hand, but the nerve damage is so
bad he still can't do much of anything with it.
"Mike O'Doyle, a Captain," Horace says, "Christ, you outrank me
now, you know that?" he takes a long pull of his beer. "Not that
they seem to be doing much with you. Christ, you'd think you'd
been injured instead of getting miraculous powers, the way they
       shipped back to the mainland."
They're sitting on a small porch, so Horace can keep an eye on
his sons while his wife is out at the store. The wide, rounded
shape of Mt. Lyell can just be seen in the distance, over the
woods that surround the neighborhood. Horace lives on the edge
of Queenstown, but the whole area is still thick with woodland.
"They're talking about leaving, you know," Horace says, "They
don't think there's a place for Aussies in this war anymore."
Then he shouts into the yard, "Jack! You know better than that!"
Jack, in the yard, releases the tail of the energetic puppy
       running beside him.
"Dumb kid," Horace mutters. His left hand, still trapped halfway
between a fist and an open hand, strokes the dog lying beside
him, an old mutt who has as much interest in running around with
the kids as it does in the political conversation.

       OOC
In case you forgot, Horace was your commanding officer while you
were still in the war. He was wounded in the fight with Tuong,
but that makes him one of the three survivors on your team.

Horace shrugs. "She's managing," he says, "Not easy, though.
Have to figure out what we're going to do. Pension's nice, but
college isn't cheap, you know? Can't be a military man anymore,"
he waves his wounded hand around, "And can't exactly take up
       mining."
He takes another pull of his beer.
"And you, O'Doyle? You going to tie the knot with that nurse?"

"If I can ever find the courage to ask her," taking a pull of
his beer " ask me to charge a machine gun or go down one of
those rat nests the VC use no problem, but ask the woman I love
to marry me I grow a yellow stripe a mile wide."

Horace nods, staring of fin the distance. "Well, it's a big
step. When you've already asked 'how's your father' it's not so
simple, especially not with a yank. You need to think about
where you'll live and how you'll split everything up. Woman like
Tiffany, she's going to keep you flat out like a lizard
drinking, I expect." He smiles mischievously, "Course, you can
force the issue if you get her in the family way. Impending
little 'uns make everything a lot clearer, you know? Mean thing
to do without telling her, but it rushes it all along."

"I've thought of that." another pull on his beer, "Have you
       thought about running for parliament?"

Horace looks confused for a moment. "Parliament?" he says, "No.
No, I haven't thought of that. Why on Earth would I?"

"Well why not your a damned war hero, and we don't need our
generation reperresented in politics by a bunch milksops that
       have never seen combat."

Horace shakes his head slowly. "I don't have the stomach for
that. War may be ugly, but at least it's honest. Can't say that
       about politics."
