Richard frowns. "I don't think there's any real question Eden's
going to be it for us since he 'saved the Atlantic alliance',
and I doubt that Labour will really pull their act together.
Gaitskell and Bevan are tearing them apart. Shame, too, because
there are days I think they actually have a point. Without an
effective opposition, we aren't going to be adjusting our own
policies too well." He sighs, "But, you know how it is, you
don't change horses in the mid-stream. Especially not when the
horse seems serious about putting peace first."
There is a pleasant pause in conversation as the fishing
resumes.
"Beautiful day," Richard says, "Can always count on Scottish
weather." A little later, "Not to dwell too long on your soul,
Wally, but do you ever think you'd be happier doing work with
someone like Salk than the government? I know I find myself
wishing I'd stuck around for a proper doctorate so I could be
out there fighting diseases. Damn sight cleaner work than
government business."

"Salk's a nice enough fellow. The guy's brilliant, talked with
him a few times myself. I hear good things about his vaccine
work. I sincerely hope it comes through. Rita had a cousin with
polio. Absolutely dreadful. Yale contacted me for a deanship, I
might take them up on it."

Richard nods along. "Yale's a fine place," but he says it in a
way that implies the other. "Closest thing to a proper school
you'll find over the pond." There it was. Richard's typical
half-joking patriotism. He cast off another line.
"Think you'll be able to handle all the bureaucracy of a
deanship? Seems like it would keep you out of the lab."

Wally finishes his cigarette and grinds the embers out on a rock
before putting it in his and David's trash bag. "Watch out for
that rock, David, it's not stable. Stand over here." Turning
have to Richard and lighting a new fag with some difficulty from
the wind, "Yale will be nice, I think. Cornell would be good as
well. But, I'm not as young as I used to be." As if in reminder,
Wally let's out a rough cough. "Lab work almost always runs late
and I don't think I'm going to have the stamina much longer."
Wally chuckles as he takes a puff on the cigarette. He looks out
at David, who's less fishing and more hopping around on the
large stones by the river's edge. An envy fills him at the sight
of the evident youth David still has.

Richard nods, "You should retire out into the country, Wally. Do
they have country in Amer-"
But he's interrupted by a sudden cry from David. The boy has
slipped on the rocks and fallen on them. With cold water rushing
over him, he lay there in the stream as the adults rushed to
help. Wallmand was there with speed that he didn't think he had
in him anymore. He crouched down to find his son clutching his
knee. There was some blood, but it wasn't that bad.
David was crying, though he was trying to keep it quiet.
Wallmand knew the boy was too old to be crying over skinned
knees, but here it was again. A wave of frustration and
embarrassment swept over him, even as his relief at David being
alright released his sudden fear.

"Alright, alright. Let's get out of the water." Wallmand says
brusquely. Wallmand reaches down and grabs David by his armpits
and hauls him bodily out of the river and onto the shore. Once
he's sat David down, Wallmand swats David's clutching hands from
his knee, "Let me see it." The older man peers at the boy's
ragged wound. He sighs deeply, "Okay, looks rough, huh?" He
gives David a wan smile to try and be a little upbeat. "Here,
press this against it." Wallmand hands David his handkerchief to
use as a bandage.

David pressed the handkerchief against his bloody knee and
winced. Up on the shore in front of his father, he screwed up
his face to try not to cry.
Richard waded into the river and retrieved David's fishing rod.
"Is the boy alright?" he asked with an air of casual concern.

Wallmand stares down at David. Watching the pitiful display with
a little shame. With a sigh which turns into a slight cough
Wallmand turns back to Richard, "He will live. We had better get
back though. He needs a real bandage and the wound to be
properly cleaned. Fish shit in that river after all." Wally
chuckles slightly at the joke.

"Must be what they're doing," Richard said, pursing his lips,
"They sure aren't biting, and I don't think the animals do much
besides those two."
He gathers up his gear and the two men and the child head back
to the house to fix the injury, and to give Hertz the privacy to
discipline his child.
