She's aware that Richard is a friend since Wallmand has
mentioned him a few times in reference to opinions that aren't
his own, but he doesn't pine after 'the old days' in front of
her. Trying to keep propriety in mind and not wanting to mention
past conquests.

"Looks good, my sweet." Wallmand says eyeing the table. He sits
down and starts tucking in. "So your mother is coming up this
weekend? What is she going to do for a whole week before the
wedding?"

"Helping out, I expect," Rita says. "You'll be glad to hear I
talked her out of staying in the apartment. She's mad enough
that the two of us are already living together, but I told her
there just isn't room here." Rita sounds a little guilty, but
it's true. There really isn't enough room in the apartment for a
third person hanging about for a whole week. If they had a spare
room, Wally wouldn't have objected in the first place. Rita
hadn't wanted to tell her mother as much as she had, but it'd
all be out in six months anyways and having a second set of
hands while the nausea was still on wouldn't be so bad. Except
for the disapproval, which Rita has warned Wally will be coming,
and will drive her crazy. The baby means her parents won't try
to talk anyone out of anything, but that won't stop them trying
to guilt her about it. Rita's not sure how they feel about
Wally's background, but doubts they're happy about it. They've
never expressed any specific dislike of Jews, really, but
between not being Christian and being foreign, they'd probably
be mad about it.
"We'll have to show her around the city, too. She's never been
to DC before. She'll want to go to all the art museums to look
at the people there." She smiles at the thought.
It's going to be a rough week, but then the Weekend will bring
out the numbers and only be rougher. Hopefully the wedding
itself will be nice, and Rita has promised to make up for all
the fuss on the honeymoon. Wally isn't sure how she'll manage
that, but at least she'll try.

I really wanted to start this post with the line:
"Holding my hair out of the toilet, I expect", but Rita has more
class than to say that. Especially over dinner.
Also, I think you got IC and OOC backwards last post.

Lol, my bad. I was pretty sick last night when I posted that.
Also there is only two Smithsonian Art Museums open at this
time. The Natural History Museum has been open for about eighty
years at this point. Though, there are probably a few art
galleries scattered around, but DC doesn't get known for artwork
until the 60's and 70's

Wallmand merely grunts in acknowledgement as he picks around his
plate with his fork. After a bit of awkward silence, Wally asks,
"Do you want to just elope?" He glances up at her and instantly
withers under her stare.
Why the fuck did you just ask that question? Wally then asks
himself internally
"It's just that... how to say this... This all seems a lot. Do
you know? I appreciate your family helping to pay for it. But,
there's just so many." Wally complains to her, trying to
backpedal as hard as he can.

Rita sighs.
"It is a lot," she echoes, "But, this isn't about one day. This
is about the rest of our life. If we elope, my parents will
never forgive me. I'll never forgive you, once I start thinking
about what we missed. It's so big, and so much because it's not
one day, it's the rest of our lives. I think dealing with a lot
is worth that, don't you?"

"Yes." Wally says quickly, not wanting to show his insecurities
or the fact that he is not concerned at all if her parents are
mad at them. As an older person, his attitude towards what
parents think of their children matter very little. His
independence gave him a different perspective on the marriage.
Coupling the fact that the reasons he was marrying Rita have
more to do with a mixture of personal responsibility and
neuroses, and not with any sort of propriety or genuine love.
Propriety and love are not things that Wallmand directs in any
fashion towards Rita's family. These people were gentiles who do
not look fondly upon him for a large number of reasons. Familial
political concerns could also serve to distract him from his
work in the Government during an increasingly tumultuous time.
"I suppose it is only the correct thing to do." Wally relents
easily enough, "Especially if it is what you want for this."
Wally returns to picking at his food. "I will put in a request
for time off for you for all of next week. This is so you can
get all this ready with your mother. However, this will mean I
will be very busy." His tone going from slightly whiny and sweet
to businesslike with nearly whip-like suddenness. "I will be
home late and I will need dinner ready and no one here to bother
me so that I can go sleep on time." Wallmand stares at Rita,
waiting for the response to ultimatum.

"Of course," Rita says, immediately. There is guilt in her
voice, and face. She clearly already feels bad enough about her
shortcomings in these departments. The crack of his words bow
her back into the position of a secretary with ease.
Not that Rita will retain the job for much longer. Right now
they're not exactly overflowing with cash, but neither Rita nor
Wallmund would ever expect their child to grow up without their
mother at home with them. Besides, the price of a proper nanny
would be almost the sum Rita earns anyways.

Wallmand finishes what food he's still hungry for a bring his
dish and remaining food to the kitchen. Then he walks back into
their bedroom and lights up a cigarette without turning the
lights on. He lays back on the mattress, staring up at a small
fan on the ceiling while taking some drags on the cigarette.
Every now and again he blows smoke up into it and watches the
shadows of the smoke play through the darkened room. He lays
there, frustrated and smoking cigarettes until Rita comes into
the room to get ready for bed. At which point he gets up and
opens a window to let the room breathe. He undresses himself and
climbs into bed, waiting for Rita so he could kiss her and then
roll over and go to sleep.

If you want to move ahead to the wedding or some point during
the week. I'm cool with that. Or we could continue this scene.

The week is... taxing. Rita keeps up a smile and does her best,
but her mother is a thoroughly uncosmopolitan woman. She is
nice, as is so typical of Americans, but her smiles and 'how do
you dos' don't, but doesn't seem entirely comfortable with how
quickly city life, and certainly not with how quickly (and far)
her daughter and her daughter's fiancé have been moving. She's
entirely uncomfortable with them having only one bed, for a
start. Thankfully, Rita gets her mother off to her hotel room
most days before Wally even gets home.
Rita is running herself ragged as the date approaches,
organizing, running about, and, more days than not, getting
sick.

The wedding day arrives. Wallmund finds himself standing in a
Church, waiting for Rita to come up. His side of the Church is
filled with work friends, and select members of the Jewish
community he's gotten to know. Rita's side is far more packed
with friends and family.

It's Wallmand, not Wallmund. The name is a derivation of the
word Waldman, which translates to 'forester'.

Wally turns to a work friend, Joseph Killington, a man he's
known only for about four months, but whom he's had quite a
number of lunches and gone to a few bars with. More importantly
however, is that he's a gentile. Which means he knows more about
these weddings than Wallmand does. After spending most of the
week's lunches with Joe learning the basic of a Christian
wedding, Wallmand felt like he was still a little unprepared.
Besides, Joe isn't that close of a friend, but no one here
really is. Which does not provide him with the comfort he could
really use. In times of emergency, even the devil eats flies,
Wally thinks with a sigh and looks back up the aisle. The music
changed and he could see Rita walking towards him, arm-in-arm
with her father. She is wearing a white dress that comes down
just below her knees with a nice pair of white heels on her
feet. It isn't the most extravagant of clothing, but no one had
the money for a more expensive dress given the recent
depression. Wally's own suit is just as simple. Merely a black
jacket over a white button up shirt with black slacks held up by
suspenders and a bow tie, the newest part of the whole outfit.
That old proverb about the devil and flies was basically
throughout the whole planning phase of this wedding.

In my defense, Wallmund appears to also be a name. A surname,
though, so not a good defense.

The wedding is everything that Hertz had been warned it would
be. It could be worse, of course. He understands Catholics get
the entire thing in Latin, and end up making promises they don't
understand. Speaking English helps. It's strange to think of
these people as Lutheran, though. There are no shortage of
Lutherans back in Germany, but they're traditions don't seem to
be the same thing.
There is a service. It starts with a reading from scripture. Not
a long one, and thankfully Wallmand has been able to escape a
reading from the New Testament. Instead it comes from the song
of Solomon: 8. Cliche, perhaps.
"Set me as a seal upon your heart,
as a seal upon your arm,
for love is strong as death,
jealousy is fierce as the grave.
Its flashes are flashes of fire,
the very flame of the Lord.
Many waters cannot quench love,
neither can floods drown it.
If a man offered for love
all the wealth of his house,
he would be utterly despised."
Then there's a sermon, in which the priest interprets the
passage for those too stupid to understand it, tries to relate a
passage written more than 2,000 years ago to the modern day, and
ultimately speaks simple comfort to the strangers at the altar
before him.
This is followed by an exchange of vows. Wallmand finds himself
saying, "I take you, Rita, to be my wife from this day forward,
to join with you and share all that is to come, and I promise to
be faithful to you until death parts us." It is only much later,
when Wallmand was sick and at the edge of death that he realized
how utterly sincere Rita was when she echoed his vow with her
own.
Then the pastor blesses the rings and Wallmand and Rita exchange
them. They publicly sign the wedding license, not part of the
usual tradition but increasingly popular and one of thef ew
things Wallmand lobbied for. With that done, the pastor
pronounces them married.
They do not kiss, as Wallmand had expected before being
prepared. Apparently such a public display would be
inappropriate. So, all the rigamarole and nonsense of the
wedding doesn't even have a tantalizing punctuation. Rita seemed
equally annoyed by that, but the pastor and her mother were very
insistent. Public decorum and all that.
So, now they were married. Dr. and Mrs. Wallmand Hertz.

The reception is busy. Nothing too extravagant (there's still a
depression on), but nothing squalid either. Just a gathering at
a local social hall, tastefully catered with potato salad, corn
on the cob and steaks.
Wallmand finds himself at a table with his new family. Everyone
is all smiles and pleasant things to say. Wally has reason to
suspect that Rita's mother still doesn't approve of him, but her
father seems nice enough. A rather bland and simple politeness
comes off of the man with the drooping mustache, and the
occasional twinkle of mischief when his wife's not paying
attention.
