Wallmand waits nervously. In the future, when he would think
back to this night, he would remember himself sitting slyly and
waiting with confidence. But that is the faultiness of human
memory. Wally is busy shoveling food into a not very hungry
stomach in order to seem busy.
However, eventually Wally reminds himself that, tonight, he has
a mission. Once he's done with his food he asks Rita, "What's
wrong my dear? You seem a million miles away."

"So far as that?" Rita says with a nervous smile, "I thought I
was only back in New York." She pushes some hair back behind her
ear. "There's some drama back home. Nothing serious, just, you
know..." she stops herself there. "It's nothing, really." She
smiles, and this time it seems genuine enough. "So, this place
is nice. What's the special occasion?"

Wally stares at her for moment. Trying to tell if she's lying or
telling the truth. Sense + scrutiny on Rita

if she's just putting on a show or not.
"Oh, I just felt that I wanted to show something to you." He
then takes a drink of wine for three reasons: to wet his dry and
nervous throat, to buy time to come up with something to say,
and for some liquid courage. "I wanted to show how much I care.
Rita, you've been wonderful to me. I cannot think of anyone else
in this country who has been a bigger help and a greater friend
to me. I want to show that appreciation means that I will do
anything for you." Wally proclaims with growing genuineness as
the wine starts kicking in and he's getting swept under in what
he's saying.

Rita blushes. It's the kind of language that Wally doesn't use
often, and it strikes home. All the confidence and
self-possession of the young working woman vanishes, and a timid
girl is laid bare.
"Really?" she says meekly. "Do you really mean that?"

Wallmand pauses for a moment, taken aback by a combination of
her apparent timidness and his own sudden enthusiasm.
Apprehension surges through him accompanied by adrenaline as the
thought of running out of the room, arms flailing, flitted
through his mind.
"Uh... y-yes." He affirms before draining the rest of his glass
of wine and pouring himself another glass.

Rita smiles, and takes a sip of her own wine. She seems to know
that something special is happening, but it's making her
nervous. For a moment, Wally thinks she's going to say
something, but then she takes another bite of her salad.
The whole conversation is teetering over a deep fall into
nothing but awkward silences and nervous smiles.

asks. Starting to feel a little silly and impatient. "I'm here

Rita looks up at Wally and hesitates again. Then she says.
"Well..." she pauses, "It might be nothing, but I've... Wally,"
she says in the tone of one abruptly changing the subject, "Have
you ever thought of starting a family?" Even Wally can recognize
that she's dancing around something.

"I have." Wallmand says as he stands up and pulls out a small,
but pretty White-gold engagement ring. He gets down on one knee
next to the table and offers it to her in his palm. He looks
into her eyes and says, "So say 'yes' to this."

"Oh God," Rita says, "Oh God. Yes! Yes! Of course, yes!" She has
tears in her eyes, and is smiling broadly. "Oh, Wally!" she
says.
After a little bit she calms down somewhat and manages to spit
it out. "You should know," he says, "I think I may be pregnant."
And there it was, sitting before them in the open.
