Wallmand lights up another cigarette and pulls the crystal
ashtray closer to him. He stares into the ashes and used butts.
"I don't know how are you are off what exactly is going on in
Germany. Most Americans don't seem to want to care." He takes a
heavy drag on the cigarette and blows the smoke out gently into
the ashtray. " But I'm going to just say that less reminders of
home might be better for me for a while."

Rita doesn't clarify how much she knows. She just nods and says,
       "Yes Doctor Hertz."
The work Hertz finds himself doing is the most boring kind. It's
all filling out forms and organizing papers. No actual biology,
simply the preludes to real work. Rita, for her part, continues
to busily sort and organize and help him work out a schedule for
       the rest of the week.
The day grows old and the Sun sinks towards its rest. It is late
and well after working hours when the pair stop.
"You asked me earlier about a bar," Rita says, "I was going to
suggest Martin's Tavern. It serves food as well, if you'd like
to eat there. It won't be kosher, though."

"Thank you." He pauses for a moment. "Would you care to join me.
I don't want to seem like a lonely man, but you are the only
person I know on this town beyond the General. We can celebrate
a 'first-day-job-well-done', it will be my treat." He adds that
last part after only a mild break.

Rita gives the kind of sad smile that one gives a sad, lonely
older man lost in another country. It's not a pleasant smile to
receive. It doesn't even show the clean teeth.
"Of course," Rita says, "That sounds like a good time."
They get a taxi and head towards Georgetown. Georgetown has a
great many older buildings compared to much of the city. Houses
dating back to the 1800s are common place and the spires of the
University could have easily been an old cathedral. Only the
carefully planned layout of the streets breaks the illusion of
an old town like the ones back home. Martin's Tavern turns out
to be a nice corner restaurant. Very respectable and classy. The
kind of place where senators and congressmen go to rub elbows,
talk about things, and maybe even get drunk.

Inside, the tavern is busy. Men in suits are standing around the
bar talking. There are, occasionally, women around. Wives,
mostly, Hertz suspects, but the younger and more attractive
examples are probably secretaries like Rita, or else escorts.
The head waiter explains to the pair that the tables are full up
at the moment, but there's room at the bar if they'd like to get
       a drink.

Pictures are of modern day Martin's Tavern, but I'm led to
believe it hasn't changed a whole lot over the decades.

Wallmand spends his time chatting and trying to learn about this
pretty girl. Also, he's buying the both of them lots of drinks.
Mostly to distract him from his thoughts of home, but it soon
becomes apparent that Rita is opening up after a few drinks.
After five she's actually full on laughing at his jokes.

Wallmand's desire to not talk about his homeland, his work, or
any of the other myriad things that make him sad, spends a lot
of the night listening to Rita instead. It's nice to hear about
a life that isn't in absolute shambles, who's problems seem so
       small and simple by comparison.
Rita, for her part, seems glad to be abel to just talk and get
some things off her chest. Problems with roommates, teething
problems with the new job and being homesick ("Oh, God, I'm
sorry, I didn't mean to... I mean, it's not anything like what
       you're going through, Dr. Hertz.").
They get pleasantly drunk. She laughs at his jokes, and things
       look well.
The night ends with Hertz dropping Rita off at her home, by
taxi, and Wallmand finding himself pleasantly surprised to feel
he's made a friend in America.
Going out for drinks with his secretary becomes one of the
highlights of Wallmand's early weeks, an excuse to get out of
his dour routines and horrible work.
This has been going on a few weeks (during which Rita helps
Wallmand look for a proper apartment and proves to be mostly
competent at work) before Rita mentions to Wally (Wallmand isn't
sure exactly when she started using the nickname outside of
work... week 2, maybe?) that her roommate is gone that week, and
asks him if he'd like a cup of coffee.
       OOC
Know I'm pressing forward, but the important thing here is
       getting detail on the courtship.
I'm assuming Hertz wouldn't take her back to his while still
bunking on base (and that it'll take him a while to find an
apartment up to his specifications because, even with money and
a government job, he's still Jewish).
The real question is if Hertz would have advanced to more proper
dates, or just kept going to the abr with her.

Hertz will likely be wary to act with any kind of affection
towards Rita at work unless they are alone. Also, after having
trouble getting a home because of his religion, he'd probably
try to start hiding that about him.
       IC
Wallmand looks at his watch as he stands under the awning
outside Rita's apartment. He is on time, good. He takes a moment
to shake some of the water off his umbrella by tamping it
against the concrete stoop. He sets the rather heavy satchel
down and presses the buzzer to catch Rita's attention. He
glances in the satchel's opening and looks over its contents to
make sure that the rain didn't get in the bag.
Inside is a myriad of different objects that Wallmand brought so
that he and Rita had something to do on this rainy day. Inside
are a couple of packs of different coffees he bought for Rita to
try since she likes coffee. A bottle of brandy for later that
evening. Two different newspapers to make conversation with.
Several records from the twenties he'd picked up today to show
to Rita. And finally, a decent size box of chocolates, just for
good measure (Wallmand wanted to chew his lips off out of
anxiety and chuckle in confidence in rapid repetition).

Rita answers the door wearing a simple red afternoon dress and a
smile. She accepts the gifts with a thank you and shows him up.
The apartment isn't very impressive. A neat tidy main room with
a kitchen section and a living room section that contains a
table with a few chairs, a couch, and a radio. Three doors lead
to a bathroom and two rooms. One of which is Rita's. Wally is
acutely aware of this last fact. He hasn't had sex since coming
to the United States. Men on the base have occasionally
recommended local brothels to him, but he's never had to pay for
it before and doesn't relish starting.
The pair talk over coffee. The coffee is good. While Rita isn't
afraid to give an opinion when she has one, Wally finds himself
doing most of the talking as he discusses the news. That's not
entirely true. Rita has some interesting opinions and ideas when
it comes to the gossip column.
Time passes easily as they talk, and as it ticks away the topic
changes fro the world to them. Rita talks about her parents back
in New York, her cousins, her childhood. She wheedles the same
out of Wally, even though he's been trying not to dwell on it.
When dinnertime approaches, Rita asks if Wally would like to
       stay for it.
It is the first time that Rita cooks for Wally. She makes
spaghetti, a childhood favorite of hers. It's only years later
that she confessed she made it out of fear that she'd burn
anything more complicated. Rita wasn't much of a homemaker back
then. She serves it with an Alfredo sauce, and the two eat while
listening to one of Wally's records.
After dinner they talk some more, only now the cups of coffee
are replaced with glasses of brandy.
Rita takes a shine to one of the records in particular. She gets
up and practically pulls Wally up with her, to dance with her.
Rita dances well, with a good sense of rhythm and beat, but
she's had a little too much brandy to keep stable.
After a few songs, Wally grabs her to steady her, and they are
       very close.

Wally inhales her smell through his nostrils, which to him is
more intoxicating than the brandy. He's very aware of how hot
his face suddenly felt and how badly his palms were sweating.
His eyes drawn to the opening in her slightly unbuttoned blouse
that she had loosened because of the humid summer heat. His
pulse quickening when he sees how the top of her breasts are
bulging above her bra because of the press of their bodies. His
rational mind makes one last attempt at self consciousness in
the form of a nervous, but knowing chuckle. However, the
hormones riotously choke that part of Wally's mind to death when
Rita laughs with him and places her arms to either side of his
neck while leaning her chest into his, her hot breath touching
       his face.
Wally leans forward and presses his lips against hers and
applying just enough suction to move her lips with his.
Providing the dual purpose of giving her a healthy dose of his
pheromone laden saliva and performing a romantic act with poise
and grace that younger men would not have bothered with. At the
same time he rested his hands above her buttocks on either side
of her hips, drawing her closer with increasing pressure. He
silently prays that the moves Richard had taught him work on
American girls like they did on the English ones.

I don't have a note on Rita's last name. Some part of my brain
says 'Hall', but unless that rings a bell with you I'm going to
       say Brown.
       IC
       They kiss.
A rising tide of hormones washes away all the doubts and
questions that Wally had about this night. All the wondering
about what Rita wants, why she was playing this nice to him, why
a woman a decade younger than him and with the looks to catch
any man on the base invited him here tonight, whether or not
someone was paying her extra to keep an eye on his work and a
hook in his loyalty, it suddenly didn't matter. There was just
the taste of her lipstick, the smell of her perfume, and the
feel of her arse in his hands.
Rita doesn't push him away. She doesn't pull back and say this
was a mistake. She just kisses back.
For a long time, they keep kissing. Hands wander up and down the
body, but lips don't stray or wander, they just keep shifting
how they're interlocking with each other. The act is familiar,
but the sensation as new as the emotions. At some point, Wally
becomes aware of Rita subtly guiding him, backing towards her
room with short, slow steps. Even as she moves, her lips never
       left his.
Then she backed her leg into the coffee table with a loud thud
       and bit into Wally's tongue.
"Oh, God," Rita said, as she stumbled back. Wally caught her and
kept her up. "I'm so sorry, are you okay?"
Wally's tongue hurt. It hurt a lot. But, he didn't taste blood,
and his head was still full of hormones and his hands still full
of her arse. Ass, some detached part of his brain reminded him.
Americans say 'ass', not 'arse'. That was when he knew that the
       strange passionate rush was over.
Rita is still flustering at him. "Oh, God, I didn't mean to."
She wasn't saying anything about her own pain, but she's flexing
her calf to test the pain.
It's amazing how quickly Rita shifted from confident sensual
       woman to a worried mess.
