Hertz appreciates the novelty of the hot dog. He's pretty sure
if the sausage was any more complex in flavor it might upset his
already tumultuous stomach. He tries some ketchup, he's never
had it before. "This isn't so bad. I can see the appeal."
Hertz lights up a cigarette and offers one to Rita. "The
cigarettes are much cheaper on base. Why live anywhere else?" He
jokes. "No, I just arrived yesterday. Everyone's being shuffled
around so much. I don't even know where to send my letters. I
had to sleep in a special wing in the barracks last night. Those
soldiers are not quiet sleepers ,I'll tell you that. They told
me I'd have a residence on base soon." Hertz takes another drag
on his cigarette and a sip of his beer. "So, you live with your
       father? Who is he?"

"Oh no," Rita says, "My family's up in Cooperstown, New York.
I'm down here on my own." There's a small pause before she
decides to add: "I live with a roommate, another secretary on
the base. Lily Chorus, you might have met her? Probably not.
"Well," she continues, "If you're looking for a place I might be
able to help you find one. I mean, if you don't want to be stuck
       on base 24/7."

Hertz thinks for a moment trying to remember the geography of
the USA. "That's almost two thousand kilometers away. Why would
you move so far? In Europe a move like that would put you in
another country with a country in between."
Hertz takes another swig of beer. "Well, I definitely appreciate
the offer. The problem is that I could move again very soon and
I wouldn't want to be trapped in a lease. Tell you what though,
you could help me pick furniture once they give me a place. I
don't own a bed." He chuckles ruefully and finished his hotdog.
He takes a final drag on his cigarette and puts it out. Blowing
the smoke out the window he asks, "Are there any good taverns or
pubs in this town? Or is this town still trapped in the
       prohibition?" He chuckles.

Shit, my bad. She does take the cigarette (and holds it out for
Hertz to light it) and smiles at the joke, without quite
       laughing.

Rita shrugs, "Europe sure sounds small, then. DC had better
work, so I moved. Better than spending more time in the New York
secretary pool, believe me. Those..." she's slipping out of her
professionalism, almost says something quite unladylike, "People
can really chew you up and spit you out. I'd prefer to work for
Uncle Sam assisting someone who's work matters, and Dad helped

Rita nods, and takes a drag on her cigarette. She holds it very
carefully, trying not to smudge her lipstick.
"Sounds like a plan, sir," she says. Then she pauses, "Is 'sir'
okay, or should I call you 'doctor'? Most people on base have
ranks I'm supposed to use." In Germany, of course, it would be
Her Doktor Professor Hertz. Americans are so informal, even when
       they're making the effort.

Rita gives him an odd look, "Prohibition ended while I was still

wonders if Dr. Hertz is really that out of touch. "And what's a
       pub?"

"I suppose 'Dr. Hertz' is fine. I don't actually have a military

meine Fraulein. I was just joking, everyone in Europe was
thinking that the Americans had gone a bit silly in the head
over the whole prohibition thing. I mean no offense. As for the
word 'pub'. I guess that ugly word didn't make it across the
pond. A pub is a place where people gather to buy alcohol and
drink it. I guess it would be something similar to a coffee
house." Hertz scratches his head as he thinks and lights another
       cigarette.

Just then, Hertz hears someone say, "Excuse me," just behind
him. He turns to find an old man sitting there. "Excuse me, I do
not mean to interrupt, but I could not help but overhear your
accent." The man speaks with the same accent, "Have you come
       from Germany, by chance?"

Uh oh, I just did some mental math. Sara needs to be born this
year if she's supposed to be in her late twenties during normal
game time. If this is '42 or '41, she would be 28 or 29. Which I
think she's supposed to be. I think this would explain how
Wallmand and Rita got married. Lol

"Yes, I am. I just came here from England though, so don't ask
me about the country. I haven't been to Germany since all that
Nazi business got started." He says, trying to head off the
inevitable storm if questions other German immigrants ask him
about the state of the country since they assume he left after
them. "Wie heißen sir? Meine name ist Doktor Wallmand Hertz.Wo
kommen Sie? Ich habe mal in Hamburg geleben." Hertz asks the
       man.
<What is your name, sir? My name is Doctor Wallmand Hertz. Where
do you come from. I lived in Hamburg at the time.>

The man begins speaking German back, leaving Rita looking a
       little uncomfortable.
<You were smart to leave when you did. My brother lives in
Frankfurt. Always I am writing to tell him he needs to leave,
but always he says he cannot risk it.> He sighs, <And now mail
is scarce and so many are left wondering.> He raises his hands,
palms toward Hertz, <Don't worry, Herr Doktor Hertz, I am not
going to pester you with questions of the homeland. There will
be time for that later,> he smiles, <But, I would like to
welcome you. I am Herr Elijah Zernik, and I want you to know you
are not alone here. This city doesn't have many German Jews,
even Abe over there,> he points to the counter, <Is from
Argentina. Still, there are a few of us. We all have family, and
we all worry. If you ever need someone to talk to, about your
new home, your old home, or just any old thing, we are here.
Just don't go talking to Frau Zernik. She will insist you tell
her every news you know about the homeland.> He shakes Hertz's
hand warmly, and then looks to Rita. <I'm starting to think your
friend doesn't speak German,> he says. "I am sorry, Miss, I did
not mean to be rude. My name is Elijah Zernik, and I was just
saying hello to Herr Doktor Hertz here. We must look out for
       each other."
Rita nods, "Yes, of course, Herr Zernik." She doesn't look much
more comfortable, but she smiles in an effort to hide that.

After they've been back at work for awhile, and Rita has made
some real progress getting everything in order, Rita asks a
       question.
"Would you prefer to avoid Jewish establishments?" she says.
Then she speaks quickly, realizing how that sounds out loud, "I
mean, I don't want to be rude, or personal, but it seems to me
you were in a hurry to get out once Mr. Zernik started speaking
to you. I thought it might have been comforting to find someone
       from back home."
