4th of July, 1969, The Texas White House: Dr. Hertz, Beatrice
Rollins, Dr. Horne, Dr. Jones

Slight retcon here, as I did some research and LBJ tended to
celebrate the fourth of July in Texas. Generally at his ranch.
People who are invited (Hertz, Horne, Jones and Rollins) are
entitled to bring family or friends so long as they're cleared
with Secret Service in advance (and don't push numbers too far,
but LBJ goes lenient on metas).

It's not exactly a big flashy white house affair, but it isn't
exactly an intimate family affair either. LBJ himself is at the
grill, but so are a bunch of photographers capturing the moment
while caterers and cooks help keep up with feeding the full
guest list. Not that the President's doing nothing, in fact he
can talk your ear off about different kinds of barbecue and yell
at anyone slathering their meat in sauce. That's not the way you
do it in Central Texas. His faithful mutt Yuki never leaves
Johnson's side, but there are other dogs running around the
ranch, along with the children and grandchildren of various
guests.
The guest list includes congressmen, even some Republicans,
businessmen, some of the top women in NOW, family friends, a
handful of metahumans that are in country, and the families
associated with them. Boris Mizurski, round middle aged middle
class man that he is, is hanging around not far from LBJ, but
gladly talking to Jackie Kennedy, who despite everything still
looks amazing. Lady Bird Johnson moves expertly through the
different groups and cliques, talking easily with businessmen
and housewives with equal ease. Johnson's close aide Brenda
Harkens is skillfully deflecting those interested in talking to
her without upsetting anyone. Dr. Hertz knows she's a metahuman,
but few others do. She's about the only person on the ranch with
intelligence that rivals Dr. Hertz's. Not that she's shown a
particular aptitude for sciences (though they weren't hard for
her), but her intelligence instead focuses on bureaucratic and
political matters.
It's a Hell of a turn out all around.
OOC
Well, go crazy with what you want to do and who you've brought
with you here. The scene is basically a chance to rub some
elbows.

Hertz stands with his wife with a beer in his hand his other
around Rita's waste. He's busying himself by introducing
different government officials to his wife, daughter,
son-in-law, and grandsons. He proudly talks about his daughter's
work as a PhD of Chemistry. It is an odd show since Hertz and
his wife look younger than the daughter and son-in-law he's
toting around. He's definitely trying to talk to some Senators
and Congressmen. It never hurts to get in good with the higher
ups.

The Hertz's make quite a splash. It's certainly true that
congressmen like to cultivate an atmosphere of superiority, it
wouldn't do the nation any good to think of its leaders as
ordinary men, they have no exemption from the thrill that
celebrity exercises upon the common man. While Hertz is obscure
enough that not everyone recognizes him right away, enough do
for it to spread. It spreads faster after he explains just why
he and his wife appear younger than their children.
Everyone wants to know what it's like to be a metahuman, and how
to become one. The answer to the latter is still classified*,
but the former is up to Hertz to speak on as he chooses.
Rita, for her part, basks in the attention. She's read through
every etiquette book she could find and is in fine form today,
ding her best to chat and rub elbows with important people.
She's trying so hard to not seem like some backwoods yokel that
she rather overdoes it, almost too familiar with strangers.
Sara and Justin seem a lot lest prepared, and are practically
using their sons as a shield throughout. Nothing simplifies a
awkward conversation like getting someone to say, "Oh what
adorable children," and go from there. Christopher and Ethan,
for their part, mostly tug and scratch at their itchy little
suits.
*Not that classification ever stopped drunk lips from flapping.
It's been generally decided telling people the powers spread
would A) make people worry it was some kind of disease and B)
cause idiots to run into danger in hopes of being saved/attacked
by metas to gain powers.

Just checking if you meant Sara was an MD doctor or a PhD
doctor, since by my notes she's a chemist.

She's a PhD in Chemistry, sorry for the confusion
IC
Hertz does spend some of his time trying to make sure to try and
put some ideas in the higher-ups heads to make a stateside Meta
affairs office. He also spends some time talking up his fellow
Metas like Horne, Rollins, and Montgomery.

Boris Mizurski is happy to see Dr. Hertz again, and shakes his
hand vigorously as he introduces his wife, Alice.
"It's good to see you," boris says, "Been feeling out of place
here. It's nice to see another normal family." He smiles,
broadly, "Not that there's anything wrong with these fine
people. Just feel out of sorts, surrounded by all these big
wigs."

Hertz smiles at Boris, "Good to see you too." Hertz shakes his
hand. "Anything exciting been going on in your work? Any new
interesting powers?"

"Work is dull," Boris says cheerily, "Who would want to hurt
President Johnson? He's great. But, outside of work, that's
where the interesting stuff is. Do you remember how the Cuyahoga
river caught fire in June? Well, I went down there to see if
maybe I could help afterwards. So many people were talking about
the pollution and the problems and I thought, well, you never
know. So I went down there and headed down to the water and I
reached out and touched it, hoping all the while I could maybe
make it better. And it did! Just like," he snaps his fingers,
"That! The pollution in the water just disappeared." He beams,
"Or maybe it turned to water, or clean air. I'm not entirely
sure, but the river's clean now. Incredible, isn't it?"
It is incredible, and a little surprising to Hertz that in all
his focus on Vietnam he missed such a big story. Clever as he
is, there's always more to be researched. More to be found. One
of his colleagues must have dealt with the report.

Beatrice has brought her mother and father. Her dad is busy
swapping war stories with a couple of senators, while her mom is
eying up some of the more eligible young men, not to subtly
pointing them out to her daughter.
Beatrice is taking a breather from all the schmoozing and
introductions by getting one of the dogs that's hanging around
to do tricks, feeding it little bits of brisket.

"I see you've met Edgar," a woman says to Beatrice as she walks
past her and the beagle. The young dark haired woman looks
familiar to Beatrice, but it takes her a moment to place it.
Three years ago her wedding was televised as a rather big event.
She's one of Johnson's daughters. "J. Edgar gave that to dad,"
she continues, "He's just the sweetest thing. The dog, that is.
Hoover, less so. I don't think we've met. I'm Luci Baines
Johnson."

"Boris, I live in a perpetual state of amazement." Hertz
chuckles and shakes his head. "You always seem to have just the
answer for any one problem, huh? When you get some time off, I'd
like to work with a bit to see what extent we can get those
powers to work. I'm thinking that we could make a trip to Africa
and see about speed growing or just making some food for
people." Hertz offers the job to Boris. "Any problems you got
that I might be able to help with my friend?"
