So, I Understand You Can Stop Time: Dr. Jones

Montgomery can't help but feel he's hanging around with his
father. It's hard not to think of the man that way, when he
speaks. There he is, larger than life, friendlier than you could
ever imagine, deserving all the respect that a young boy can
find. That a young man can find, that is.
For his part, the President stands straight, his head hunched
just a little forward, and casts his line into the water. He's a
surprisingly tall, over six feet. Big, too, and the gray hasn't
entirely taken over his black hair.
"Now, don't be shy there, son," President Lyndon Baines Johnson
says. Montgomery's heart jumps at the last word. "Plenty of fish
in this creek for the both of us. Just grab a rod and step on
up."
The creek in question is Hunters Creek, a few miles outside Camp
David. It is a huge honor to be invited here at all, and an even
bigger honor to be asked to stay for dinner. Montgomery has
never been so honored. It's only natural for him to pick up a
rod, bait the hook, and cast it into the creek. Montgomery can't
see them, but he's sure some burly security men are stalking the
woods.
"It's mostly trout," the President says. "You like trout, don't
you?"
He listens to Montgomery's answer, and engages in small talk for
a brief time.
Then, just as Montgomery is settling in, feeling like a little
kid fishing with his dad, the President's talk goes big.
"So, Monty, do you mind if I call you Monty?" Montgomery really
can't muster an objection, not to this man, "So, I understand
you can stop time. Is that right?"

Of course, a man as busy and usually in a rush as LBJ (to
paraphrase his wife) taking this personal time with you is a big
deal.
Naturally, this Thread is about LBJ paying attention to Dr.
Jones, confirming him as a bigger player in the world,
potentially giving him great accolades and favors, and getting
the Treatment.

"About as much I like any fish really," Jones says. "My mom used
to fry them, but I remembering hearing that they can be candied
like salmon."
Jones converses with the President for a short time, discussing
various ways to prepare trout, and keeping an eye on his line.

"Well, Dr. Hertz has a theory that I'm doing something else,
which is fair considering that what I seem to do should be
completely impossible." Jones says in a contemplative tone, "I
started doing a bit of research into it in my spare time,
especially once I got back to the states, and as far as I could
figure, not only should the energy required to stop time be
impossible for me to gather, but when I do stop time, the area
that I'm effecting should be ripped from the earth and flung
into space."
Jones pauses for a second, his face caught in a frown and his
mind lost in thought, before saying in a relaxed tone, "But in
spite of all the impossibilities, it does seem like I can stop
time with no ill effects. Well, no ill effects other than having
to constantly readjust my watch"
Jones finishes pulling in his line, and, having failed to catch
any fish, casts it back out into the creek.
"If you like Sir, I can give you a demonstration." Jones offers
with a slight smile, "I know I went on for a bit about how
dangerous it should be, but it really is quite safe."

Johnson smiles big and wide, "Seems to me I wouldn't be able to
really appreciate it, unless you can catch fish with it." He
looks over at Dr. Jones, his boots almost knee deep in the
stream, "And I wouldn't worry too much about what's 'possible'
when it comes to these powers. Never noticed one of these
Goddamned things that obeyed the laws of man or God." He casts
his line out again, "Just have to hope the man who has them
does."
The two fish for some hours, and hike their way back up to Camp
David. Dr. Jones catches sight of the security detail here and
there in the woods. They're not dressed in the suits he'd
expect, but in boots and hiking gear of their own. Johnson
doesn't seem to pay them any attention.
Lady Bird Johnson is out on the porch when they come back,
sitting in an old rocking chair and fanning herself in the heat.
Her husband holds aloft the prized trout as they approach. She
stands up, smiling warmly.
"Did the secret service catch those for you again?" she asks.
Johnson puts on a face of mock shock, "Lady Bird, where do you
get these crazy ideas? I'll have you know this young man here is
a natural." He turns to Dr. Jones for support, "Isn't that
right, Monty?"
Lady Bird's smile broadens. "Well, whoever caught them, you'd
better hand them over so I can get them cooked."

Dinner is a surprisingly simple affair. The First Lady doesn't
cook herself, but takes the fish to the staff. The meal is well
cooked by gourmet chefs, but comes out tasting like a Texas fish
fry, complete with potato salad. The three eat together, and Dr.
Jones finds himself listening in on some rather high level
discussion about the state of the nation, and of individual
politicians. Most of it flies over his head, as they bring up
specific programs and laws, but Johnson has more than a few
choice things to say about Nixon:
"Man tried to ruin the war, just to win an election."
For the most part, though, conversation is kept ore light than
that. The Johnsons ask about Dr. Jones's past and share stories
of their own.
---------------------------------------------------------
After a dinner, Johnson invites Dr. Jones back to his smoking
room for a cigar and some Cognac. The stuff is powerful and
rich.
"Alright then," the President says, "I've enjoyed talking to
you, Monty, and I think you're a fine young man, but I'm sure
you know that we have something to talk about." He takes a swig
of the Cognac and shakes his jowls, "That's the stuff." He sits
in one of the big leather armchairs and gestures for Dr. Jones
to do the same.
"I understand our people have been sending you off to bring back
ghosts and stare at the past. Useful stuff, I'm sure, but I
think with this time stop thing we can more. So, I'd like to get
your input on that. What do you think the best use of this
incredible gift is?"
---------------------------------------------------------
Apologies, I know it's a lot, but wanted to keep it moving and
there was a lot to describe.
Your post was good, though.
