       Stories...

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Saturday I walked up on a pair of Javelina in the Arizona desert
not far from Sedona, a mother and her yearling piglet. It was
about 5:30 PM and the heat was just starting to abate which had
them up foraging when I arrived. The smaller of the two moved
away, shy and nervous of the tall stranger who pulled up with a
start just 15 feet and a little above where they were in the
       scrub.
I’d been watching them at a distance a few moments before this,
totally mesmerized, as they slowly wandered down and off the
trail we had both been traveling. I gave them some time assuming
they would wander off a bit before I walked quietly over to
where they left the trail to get a better look, oblivious to the
fact that they had only dropped down a slight incline and were
really no farther from where I had spotted them initially.
It immediately became a Mexican standoff, the sow and I both
caught in a strange moment of vulnerability, she with her back
to me a few feet away and I, in no position to try and run if
she turned and charged. Crisply turning her head over her left
shoulder we locked eyes, both frozen in this moment,
assessing... who knows? But at the very least the other's
       intent.
Up to this point I had never seen a Javelina in person but I’ve
been fascinated by them from afar for some time, so much so that
I picked up a taxidermy’d head of a boar at auction about 6
months ago, no reason, just liked it and thought it an
interesting addition to the JC Penney building. I’ve
contemplated and studied that boar’s head often, it’s the 1984
World Champion mount in it’s class, a steal in my mind when the
gavel came down at $120, a tasteless waste of money to the
girlfriend but like the trooper she is, she rejoiced that I was
successful in my own little pig hunt. It’s since become the
building mascot of sorts and garners a bit of attention when the
natives arrive for whatever they arrive for.
But this naked, vulnerable sow was another matter altogether,
once she sensed my presence she stopped, turned and glared back
at me taking me in fully, I stood frozen, not in fear, I was
simply stupefied. Neither of us flinched for what seemed like a
long time but was probably just several seconds, Her presence
was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
I have a dog and play with other dogs and cats, I enjoy their
rawness, what I think of as an ease they have, I enjoy just how
un-encumbered they are but this bush pig was of another realm
altogether, even watching a tiger pace in a zoo is much
different, they are someplace else in their cage with their
primal anxiety, and any observer is but a distant, popcorn
eating monkey, safely hidden behind bars or glass. Caged animals
don’t really look you in the eyes like this javelina looked at
       me.
And then she snorted, a guttural, throaty blast into the air
that had I not been mesmerized might have startled the bejesus
out of me. And the stare down continued, it seemed an eternity
there, eyes staring into eyes, gauging intent and waiting for
something to happen. And then, I guess semi-satisfied that I
posed no threat to her piglet, she let go another nostril blast,
turned her head and trotted off behind her youngster who had
       wandered ahead.
Whoa. That was awesome. And yet there was something more, beyond
just the experience. I felt more connected to that purely wild
life form in that moment and in the hours that followed than I
have felt toward any being I’ve encountered, prior or since. At
the corporate outing dinner that night (girlfriends job) I felt
completely alien to the human cacophony around me, the
distasteful posturing and glad-handing, the emptiness of filled
cups. Something intrinsic and fundamental passed between us in
those brief moments in the desert or more accurately, I am now
attuned to this frequency, this primal essence, in the dream
state it’s Domestication 110% of the time, dogs and cats
included. I felt alive and kindred to this beast, infinitely
more so than the humans across the way at the resort.
There’s still something raw and primal out there, and in here,
that people in general no longer have available, humanity is
fast asleep to what is… I see why Jed chooses Cambodia in a new
light now, it seems to be the last human jungle.

       marvellous,
when a friend of mine has given me hospitality to her house, in
Sardegna, i've met a lot of cute animals (not in cage): donkeys,
       deers, flamingos, boars, goats
Just their pure presence was delightful.
Then in the evening we've eaten overcooked-donkeys and goats
cheese. Also these were very delighfuls.
       (Joking, just black humor)
The moment i touched the donkey i felt immediately the
autenticity of that entity, without any mask, judgment,
       emotional-barriers.
       In that casual-yoga-session (direct-perception-connection-union
with life) i remembered that is impossibile to be separated,
even if we (human-machines) worship that thought...
