       My feeling is that the fight against the extreme right could
       allow us to recover a common project, a European social
       democratic project that goes beyond the issues that each of our
       parties must resolve in their own country. We need, then, to
       articulate this shared project. You mentioned the growth of the
       extreme right. Why do you think these " illiberal" forces, like
       those that govern countries like Hungary or Poland today, have
       gained strength.

       of these political formations? One of the reasons for the rise
       of the extreme right is, in my opinion, the relative failure of
       some of the policies adopted by the socialist and social
       democratic parties. If you look at the program of some of the
       far-right forces, one will find that they propose a series of
       social measures that tend to protect ordinary citizens: the
       defense of the minimum wage and support for family sustenance
       are good examples of this. Of course, they do it in a completely
       different way than what the left proposes, since they appeal to
       nationalism, base instincts and discriminatory and xenophobic
       positions.

       However, with this supposed defense of the "common people" they
       have managed to develop strong political growth. And what is
       happening in our space? While the right speaks for ordinary
       citizens, On the left we seek to discuss everything. We discuss
       identity politics, we discuss international relations, we
       discuss big global issues, but we rarely talk about the feelings
       of those people who struggle every day to cope with a difficult
       and hard life.
