CAT IV Type rating practical test
DIR By: Rodney Velarde
Date: April 21, 2013, 7:46 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Greetings:
I have just completed the CAT IV Type rating test, and would
like to suggest that the following change be implemented:
The test direction reads: .......Return to KJFK and fly the VOR
approach to runway 4R, circling to 31R. Make a full stop
landing."
I found this to be an extremely hard manouver to do for the
following reasons:
1) It is a night flight. 2) The ceiling is 800 MSL. 3) the
visibility is 3 miles or less, 4) You are flying manually (no
auto pilot),.... and 5) With only one CRT screen to toggle back
and forth between the forward and side views, one tends to loose
sight of the runway very quickly.
So.... I recommend that the direction be changed as follows:
".....Return to KJFK and fly the VOR approach to runway 4R to
the MDA. Do a missed approach and fly to the holding area.
Perform two full holding turns before returning for an ILS
landing to Runay 31R. Do not use the autopilot. Make a full
stop landing."
I suggest this would be a more viable test, specially if there
is only one CRT screen available.
What are your comments?
Thanks for listening
Rodney Velarde

Hi Rodney,
sounds convincing to me. I'll check it out by flying your
suggested procedure and come back to the subject as soon as
possible.

Bernd

800 & 3- Yes, no doubt it is challenging. However, I have done
every approach in the program and every one can be accomplished.
Circling approaches are considered the most challenging in the
industry by far. Two important things to remember:
1. Remember that a normal visual pattern (downwind, base, final)
starts at 1500'. The descent begins abeam the threshold, the
base turn occurs while passing 1000' and turning final normally
occurs near 500'. If you are at 800' and you are on the base
leg, start the descent before turning final. Use 600-800 fpm,
and be careful that doesn't increase during the turn to final.
Maintaining a constant rate of descent is vital!
2. When on downwind, look ahead past the end of the runway and
find a point ahead of you that is 45 degrees off the end of the
runway. This is your turn point for turning to the base leg.
When you arrive there and the runway is somewhere behind you,
you know this is the place to turn. When on a circling approach,
do the same thing. When I'm running parallel to 4R, on base for
31R, I look ahead and find a point on the ground where I should
start my turn to final. When that point goes under the nose I
start my turn. When I roll out, the runway will be right ahead.
If I judged my descent correctly, the VASI lights should be red
over white. Smile, you just flew a perfect circling approach!
On your next regular flight go ahead and do the circling
approach in daylight and clear skies. Then later try it at
night. Then try it in lower ceilings and visibility. Pretty
soon, you're an old pro at it.
One day I flew in to Duluth with Northwest Airlink in the Saab
340 (real world). I said to the FO "Let's fly the VOR approach
to 3, circle to runway 9, just for fun and practice." So, we
did! Flew overhead at 500', turned downwind, then base and
started down when we turned final. In northern Minnesota,
practicing circling approaches was a necessity. Later, as the
passengers were deplaning, one guy stuck his head up front and
said "Flew the circling approach to runway 3, huh? Very nice!"
Haha! You never know who's in back watching!

Great suggestions, and thanks much.
I agree that circle to land is about as hard a maneuver as you
want to accomplish at night and low celeings. I also have found
that
it is easier done in "the real world" when you can look out
nicely!!
My only peeve is trying to push buttons ont he sim to change
screen views while trying to stay ahead of the plane....! Can
it be done? Yes..... but I still don't think it is a good test
for "us newbies".....Would like to hear what Bernd has to say
after tyring both.
Thanks for the inputs indeed.
Rodney

Hi Rodney!
I haven't forgotten the matter. However, I am still struggling
with my FSX. The toggle mode is somehow flawed. I can change
views from cockpity view to left, right or locked spot, but when
toggling back to cockpit view the simulation freezes
immediately. So far, I couldn't fix the problem and nobody has
an idfea what may cause the problem. Since I need side views for
the flights in question I'll have to postpone the matter until
the problem is resolved. Sorry, but not my fault!

No probelm Bernd:
I understand the situation with buttons not doing what they are
supposed to do.... One main reason why I returned to MSFS 2004
>:(
Since I completed the flight, I am not in any hurry, but I am
surely very interested in your opinion. Remember, you must do
it with only one Screen!! 8)
Lots of luck and thank you indeed

Bernd:
I am getting near ready to take the CAT V test, and I think I
have the same situation with the approach to KJFK as I did with
the CAT IV test. Any answers on my suggetion?
Thanks indeed
Rodney.

Hi Rodney!
I am sorry, but I am still struggling with the toggling problem
which could not be resolved so far. As soon as I toggle back
from outside or side views to cockpit view the simulation
freezes and the PC does not accept any commands anymore. I need
to pull the plug and re-boot. The PC crack who may have the
solution is still not available, away on business until May
20th. I have not forgotten what you have been asking for and
I'll take care of things as soon as I can. Promised! Sorry
again, but its not my fault.

Bernd

Hi Rodney!
Finally I made it. Repeated CHEKA 4 in accordance with the
presently required procedure. The second flight was made in
accordance with your proposals for modification. I do agree that
due to the time of the day (darkness) and MET conditions it is
indeed very difficult to pass the test and complete the
checkride successfully for a pilot with less experience. The
procedure as suggested by you is indeed easier to achieve even
though it may extend the flight time by a few more minutes.
Nevertheless, the matter was discussed already with our CEO
David Reed who is of the opinion that there should be no
amendments being made to the present procedure. Since David is
the boss we have to accept his decision which in my capacity as
Chief Pilot at HAG I am obliged to support. As for me - sorry
again for the delay but it took that long to resolve the PC
problem.

Bernd:
Thanks for trying and for your assistance. We ofcourse shall
abide by the BOSS...... BTW.... I found the same problem with
the Cat V check ride..... makes it much better if you do it
during day light hours!!!
Thanks again....
Rodney..
