I just wanted to let you know when I was stationed at Elmendorf
in Alaska we had a squadron of C-124's to fly supplies back and
forth to the lower 48. A big cargo was jet engines. While I was
there a C-124 crashed into Cooks inlet but floated so they blew
it back towards shore with helicopters then used cat's with
winches from Ft Richardson to pull in in. They dissembled it
and sent it back to Douglas for repair. One interesting thing
about the plane is when they taxied it one of the crew would be
half out of a hatch it the top of the plane to help the pilot
steer the plane because the pilot had limited visibility when
taxing.
