       Let's emphasize: physical violence. Of course there are other
       types of violence that are essential to confront, but these
       forms of violence are fought politically, not in a police or
       legal manner. But what happens to the sectors of the radicalized
       right that fail to condemn this physical violence, that limit
       themselves to observing it, "understand" it even if they say
       they do not share it and, ultimately, help to normalize it.
       Are they not “partners” – willing or involuntary – of extremists

       they do not use their methods? Would
       it be appropriate to declare them illegal and prohibit them from
       running for elections even if their current actions do not
       qualify as crimes against the constitutional and democratic
       order? Would it perhaps be convenient to exclude them from
       public discussion, to apply prior censorship to them, to prevent
       them from exercising the rights that they would probably cut off
       from others if they came to power? We return, once again, to
       classic questions about tolerance of the intolerant.

       Democratic societies have the right to defend themselves against
       real attacks, but they would lose much of their democratic
       character if they punished potential threats in advance. The
       "preventive measures" that are promoted today with the best
       intentions are reversible and, looking back, it is more likely
       that they will be used against the left more than the right and
       on marginalized sectors more than on the powerful. For the rest,
       there is an additional problem.
