Mask Encounters

For my birthday, in February 2021, I got a $100 gift card to
Cheese Importers in Longmont. The moment I stepped inside, an
employee demanded that I put on a mask. I told her I was exempt.
She said I had to wear it anyway. I told her "no, I don't.
That's the definition of exempt." She said she would get a
manager. I went further into the store to wait, without a mask.
A few minutes later, a gentleman showed up with a surgical mask
in hand. He politely asked me to put it on. I declined and told
him that I am exempt. He said it didn't matter, that their
policy is "no mask, no service." I got my phone out and started
filming, told him that as long as he has a business license with
the state of Colorado, he is not allowed to turn anyone down due
to a medical condition. He quoted, "no shirt, no shoes, no mask,
no service" that its an article of clothing, not a medical
condition. I asked to see the written policy and the science
behind it. He said he didn't have it, was just doing his job,
that this is what the owner dictates. I then demanded the cash
from my gift card, told him I'd spend it somewhere else. He said
he could only refund it to the person who purchased once they
presented a receipt and he was sure it was purchased online. I
made him wait while I contacted the purchaser, who took a few
minutes to respond to me. She confirmed that she'd purchased it
in person with cash in the store, and once she found the
receipt, she took a picture and sent it to my phone. I showed it
to him and he finally relented, processed a refund and handed me
the cash. This entire time, nearly an hour, I was in the store
without a mask. Later, when I went to submit a compilation to
the DOJ, I noticed that my phone had NOT recorded the event as I
had expected. I have not done anything about it since then. My
heart is broken because I have loved shopping here since they
opened. My daughter even worked here years ago! Such a shame.
Such a disappointment.
