How a Few Eccentric Outsiders Gave Us Nightmares, Conquered
Hollywood, and Invented Modern Horror
Just finished this engaging telling of what’s described as New
Horror (vs. the original horror with Dracula, Frankenstein,
etc). The book solidly intertwines the stories of the major
players Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, Brian DePalma, John Carpenter,
Roman Polanski, Dan O’Bannon... and goes into great detail of
the back stories of how their iconic movies come to develop and
be made. I had no idea Alien was originally envisioned as a
B-movie. The story on its evolution is very revealing.
The author also gets into the psychology of the attraction to
horror movies which I found fascinating. It’s not as dark as
thought. I mean I thought people who actually bought movies like
Last House On The Left or I Spit On Your Grave and watch it over
and over. Different kind of horror fan and not the sicko I was
thinking. Anyway, a great book on the author’s perspective, and
his research from these directors.
The end does hint at where will horror take us next.
Definitely recommend this well written, structured book
