I mean I don't recall a company following up future releases
cheaper. Typically it's better, with more bells and whistles and
they keep the price the same, but rarely have I seen a company
release a new product less expensive than what they've priced it
previously.
I may be just talking out my ass, without much thought into
this.

There is no price point for the Xbox 720. All talk that says
otherwise is purely speculation at this time. History has shown
that new gadgets like a console will cost more....not less, as
you pointed out with the Bells and Whistles. That s h i t cost
money and Microsoft isn't one to pass the savings onto the
consumers. But once the 720 is released, you will be able to
pick up the 360, which is what we all have now, at a drastically
reduced price. So, if you're still on the fence about getting a
console, this may be the right time for you to do so. You will
practically be getting it for free.
I will definitely be getting the 720, but I'm also considering
get the latest from Sony. The PlayStation has a lot of exclusive
titles that I want to play and I can't do that if I own just an
Xbox.

The $299 price point to me is just way too low for a console AND
Kinect 2. Don't get me wrong, I'd pick it up at that price for
sure. It would actually be cheaper than what I paid for the 360
which didn't have Kinect or a Blu-ray player in-console.
