Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic

Ok after a few days of playing the full version (yes I bought
it) I have to honestly say.... I'm hooked! I think MMORPGs have
this certain stigma that is undoubtably due to WoW and its
borderline psychotic community. It seems alot of people forget
these kinds of games are RPGs its just that theres alot of other
live people running around there in the same game as you.
Ok I could try and write a review or describe my game play
experiences and there's a 100% chance that it will be different
than everyone elses. Where as with a regular RPG say like Kotor
or Mass Effect the story line is 95% the same to everyone. With
this you have the 2 factions, The Republic and the Sith Empire,
withing those 2 you have a few choices to make as far as
character types and they each have there own distinctive story
lines. A total of 8 distinctive story lines that are fully
fleshed out and full voiced. You want to ask WHY it took so
long? Thats why. To say that TOR is a huge game would be an
insult. This is a huge, gigantic game, you'll always have
something to do and somewhere to go.
Just a small thing about my experiences and what I was
expecting. I hear horo stories about the WoW community and the
general chat that goes on. Chat is something that is always
going on with the people that are in the same area you are in.
Say your on server 1138 and 65 people are on Tatooine, those are
the people you can chat with. Chat is very usefull where people
can ask questions offer help, ask for help or just shoot the
sh1t. I heard WoWs general chat was about equal to being a jew
in nazi germany. So I was a bit scared as to TOR. I couldn't
have been happier with the community or at least the people who
are on the server that I've been playing on. Lots of helpfull
respectfull people who offer help and like to have fun. There
are some instances that are called "Heroic" and those absolutely
cannot be done solo. But since the the stories and worlds are
structured brilliantly there are alot of people with the same
Hero instances you will have. So just asking if anyone want to
help with a certain quest is just a matter of asking and you'll
get someone.
One of the funniest things I've seen in a game ever happened to
me just the other night. On Coroscant there is a HUGE battle
droid of sorts and is labeled a "World Boss" its level is 18 and
people are OBSESSED with wanting to kill it. Last night someone
asked if someone wanted to help them kill it. I had been foolish
enough to go up against and lasted about 2 seconds, litterally
..... dead. I convinced the guy to start recruiting at least 20
people even after my warnings. He started recruiting people and
by the time I got there there was 20 or so players gathered to
take this thing on. People where PUMPED there where even people
just coming over to watch. There where some participants who
really thought we where going to take this thing out. So we went
in...... and died .... everyone of us. I lasted longer this time
but it was just hilarious seeing all those lightsabers and
rockets and laser blasts converging on this monsterous droid. We
didn't even make a dent which made it all the more hilarious.
All in all I'm really enjoying it while learning how the whole
leveling and skills work. Theres alot there and alot to take in
but its alot of fun.

I'm still very much intrigued by this game. Thanks for the post.
Dude, you say people were coming by to watch? Is it open to
public to view people playing or do I need the game itself? At
least video tape yourself getting slaughtered and then posting
it up on YouTube for my demented pleasure of watching you die
over and over on the same level.

Well when I say people where coming by to watch I mean they saw
in general chat that people where going to gather and try and
take that droid on. So instead of joining in an trying to help
they just kind of stood back and watched up get out asses
kicked. Much like a Mike Tyson vs..... anyone he fought thing in
vegas. It must have been hilarious to see from a distance. This
is a vid of a group of 28 people taking him on. It looks a
little ridiculous and its absolutely a fight you DONT have to do
but the feeling of bring that bastard down must be great.

Haha. That looked like one giant cluster phuck. Question, if at
any time during that battle, if you die are you out for the
remainder of the fight or do you re-spawn immediately?

Whenever you die you have an option to be revived by a medical
droid and you have 8 seconds after the revive to get to a safe
position OR you can immediately respawn at the nearest medical
center. Now the medical droid has a cool down time so if you die
and chose to be revived and then die again theres probably a
minute or so wait. The medical center revive is always instant.
Then there are healers that can revive but that also has a cool
down period.
