The album that f*cked it all up for Diamond Dave. Great album,
but at what cost? Fired or left on his own from Van Halen
because of the success of this EP. Man, what the hell was he
thinking? But then again, we never would have gotten Eat Em and
Smile.
As much as I love "California Girls", my personal favorite song
is "Easy Street". Earworm to the max!!! And "Coconut Grove"
rules. It's really hard to come up with a lot to talk about here
when the entire "album" consist of just 4 songs. So I guess I
will turn my attention to the ultimate music video. The
California Girls video was the best damn free p0rn I ever got as
a kid. Now bring on that damn Crazy From The Heat movie, 30
years in the never-getting-made making, damn it!!!!!

This band, that was put together for Diamond Dave's first full
solo effort is the only band that could have pulled it off. Take
any of the ingredients out of the mix, and it would have
probably been just an average album. But with Steve Vai, Billy
Sheehan, and Gregg Bissonette surrounding Dave, they pulled off
a pretty big coup: Dave made the right choice in leaving Van
Halen (at least for the time being, before everyone defected,
leaving him all alone...to buy reefer for 10 bucks from an
undercover cop. But that's another story).
As for the album, it's perfect from top to bottom. "Ladies Nite
In Buffalo" still has one of the all time kickiest grooves ever.
"Tobacco Road" is all little Stevie to the max. "Yankee Rose" is
just an awesome song, which showcased everything that is great
about the album. And of course there is "Big Trouble", which
is still an amazing song to this day.
Amazing debut for a man clearly needing to make a statement to
the rock world that he could do it on his own. That is till he
became a paramedic...but that too is another story. As much as
this album was a statement for Diamond Dave, it was also a
coming-out party for Steve Vai who more or less upstaged Dave on
his own album. And Steve's partner in crime was Billy Sheehan,
which was the beginning of a long lasting collaboration between
the two.
Great cover art to the Album. Iconic and the the best of his
career. Some clarification about the back cover here. I have the
vinyl for this and what's depicted here is a little misleading
given that I couldn't find scans that matched up. The original
back cover to the vinyl is the one with Dave screaming as seen
in the below shot for the Spanish version. For whatever reason,
the CD used the back of the Inner Sleeve (Side B) of the Dancing
chick as seen above. Go figure. I don't know what goes through
the minds of those in marketing.

Have to point out that they also put out a Spanish version of
the entire album to capitalize on the Mexican market. It failed
miserably. So all ideas about doing this for his future releases
were scraped. Sonrisa Salvaje translates to "Wild Smile", which
is the Spanish version of Eat 'Em and Smile. The music is
intact. The vocals were the only things redone. ¿Comprende?

Some great stuff on this, but as a whole, it could never quite
reach the heights of Eat Em And Smile. It's funny that Dave left
Van Halen over the idea that Eddie was adamant about making the
new VH record (5150) more keyboard-heavy. And here we are 2
years later, and his biggest hit is "Just Like Paradise". Go
figure. I love the song. It's one of my faves. Earworm for sure.
"Perfect Timing" is another great song as well.
The song "Skyscraper" is very unusual with the audio pans left
and right for the vocals. But Steve's playing is pure vintage
"Flexible" stuff. "Damn Good" is a great song, which back then,
felt like his attempt at a "Wanted Dead Or Alive" song. Nowhere
near as great as that, but still a winner in my book. This
review gets a half star less rating than it did a year ago. I
just miss that harder edge of Eat Em And Smile. Still some great
songs here though.
Fave Songs: Just Like Paradise, Skyscraper, Damn Good and
Perfect Timing. Album cover is meh. It ties in with the name
thematically, but it's still a boring cover. Get creative dude!
Why not have Diamond Dave scaling the Empire State Building, ala
King Kong?
HTML http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_biggrin.gif[/img]
Billy Sheehan leaves the band shortly before the Skyscraper Tour
starts. Steve Vai quits later at the end of the tour to join
Whitesnake. Gregg Bissonette eventually follows suit. So,
Diamond Dave went from having a Supergroup...to needing a group
hug.

This is such a great album. I wonder if anyone on here has even
heard the entire album besides the title track: "A Lil Ain't
Enough". The album itself has some great rock songs, and some
really bluesy stuff that you wouldn't necessarily associate with
Diamond Dave, namely "Tell The Truth" and "Sensible Shoes",
which are personal faves of mine.
Dave made an excellent choice in picking his new guitar
wunderkid, Jason Becker. I had known of him prior to him joining
when he was fronting the band Cacophony with Marty Friedman.
It's just a shame that Jason finally reaches the big time, only
to be stricken with Lou Gehrig's Disease. He never got to tour
in support of the record and barely finished the album as is.
Such an amazing player. He knocked it out of the park with this
one.
Having revisited this one recently, this is still a good rocking
record and holds up extremely well, more so than some of his
other solo albums. As mentioned before, it's got a lot of blues
influences peppered throughout. It's even more shocking in a way
because I checked out a lot of Jason's earlier work in Cacophony
the last time I listened to A Little Ain't Enough. If you got a
little taste of his playing in that band, the last thing you
would expect from Jason is blues playing when he was heavily
influenced with neo-classical shredding at the time.
Fave songs: A Lil Ain't Enough, Shoot It, Lady Luck, Tell The
Truth, 40 Below, Sensible Shoes and It's Showtime! (which is
vintage "Van Halen"). Drop In The Bucket is probably my fave of
them all.

Your Filthy Little Mouth is probably his least heard album of
all the major releases in his career. Might tell ya something
when there aren't any videos to be found anywhere to give you
guys a sample to hear. Nada.
I don't remember ever seeing any promotional videos for this
album when it dropped. I picked it up when it came out just
because I was a fan of DLR, so it didn't matter. And it's a
shame it never got a wider audience, as it's an amazing and very
diverse record and very underrated. It's a nice blend of
straight ahead rockers and the more bluesy songs hinted at on A
Little Ain't Enough. Throw in some reggae and some funk and you
got yourself a cool party record.
"She's My Machine" is vintage Van Halen stuff here. Travis Tritt
duets with Diamond Dave on the rocker "Cheatin' Heart Cafe".
Sounds llike a stupid song huh? Well, aside from the lame spoken
part between the two that comes before the actual song, its a
damn catchy tune. The "elephant" guitar sound always gets stuck
in my head. And it's not a country song, not even a whiff of it
being one. "Experience" is another cool bluesy song, much in the
same vein as "Sensible Shoes" from his previous release.
"No Big 'Ting" is something I shouldn't like. But damn it's so
catchy and the one I play more than any other. It's a cross
between Reggae and Big Band Jazz Swing, if that makes sense.
"Night Life" is another great tune. Very soulful. The ladies
will definitely put out if you guys wanna score.
HTML http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_wink.gif[/img]<br
/>So play this one, if that's your intention. "Sunburn" will do
the same trick too, which is a great slow burn, jazz blues
tinted tune. Imagine Dave in a speak easy, sitting on a stool,
surrounded by cigarette smoke wafting thru the air, with a lone
spotlight shining down on him with a jazz band behind playing.
That's the mood of the song.
If there's one song that you will play, cruising down the strip
on a weekend, it's "You're Breathin' It". Trust me, you will. I
absolutely approve this record to anyone that is a fan of
Diamond Dave. Pick up this record. Seriously. It's worth it.
Awesome party record.
Fave Songs: Every last one of them.
UPDATE:
I found that they did release a music video for the album.

Coming off Your Filthy Little Mouth's "under performing" album,
and hugely underrated in my eyes and ears (if your going by
sales, then yes, it was under performing. Artistically, no.).
Gone is the wide spectrum of musical styles of Blues, Funk,
Reggae, Big Band Jazz of the previous release, and in is vintage
Van Halen rock to recapture his former self and hopefully regain
fans that maybe thought YFLM was too much of a departure.
Let me tell ya...this sh*t is f*ucking goooooooooood. Stellar
guitar work and the band is Tight. I picked this up a few years
after it was originally released in a bargin bin by accident. I
hadn't even realized that Dave had come out with any new stuff
till that day. Its just a shame there's no promotional videos
for this either. MTV wasn't playing anything back then, so why
spend money on music videos if they aren't going to show it,
right?
Fave Songs: "Going Places", "Relentless", "Right Tool For The
Job", and "Tight". The cover is of world renowned pinup queen,
Bettie Page.

How to describe this album, simply titled Diamond Dave? Although
I enjoy it for the most part, Diamond Dave (the album that is)
was absolutely the worst thing he could have done. Especially
coming off the musically-reviving DLR Band, which didn't show by
way of hit songs, money in the bank, etc.... But musically it
was by far the best since Eat Em And Smile.
So, why go the way of doing an entire album of covers with a
lounge lizard spin on it? Just picture Dave working on Freemont
Street in Vegas in a Smokey filled room crooning songs and this
is what you get. My guess is that he was just to lazy to take
the time to write anything new. Stylistically, the music is all
over the place. But all the songs are sung in the same manner
from song to song. It's a mood I guess he was trying to emulate.
Having said that, I actually like this a tad more than that of
Skyscraper, even though they both rate the same.
Fave Songs: You Got the Blues, Not Me, Tomorrow Never Knows and
Let It All Hang Out. Horrible album cover. Atrocious.

I don't have this record, nor will I ever pick it up. This was
his follow up to Diamond Dave and technically the last thing he
has recorded that I know of. I saw his apperance on The Tonight
Show With Leno and I literally had my head in my hands saying,
"Why Dave, why?"

Watching him that night was watching a once mighty showman fall
to the depths of hell, only thing is, once he got to hell, the
Devil was runnin'....away from Dave. Even he thought this an
embarrassment. Without keeping you in suspense, I give you....

not take any more of it.
