What the f*ck did you just do James Cameron? Seriously,
WHAT....THE.....FUCK. I'm amazed that I was able to avoid all
spoilers for Terminator: Dark Fate before I got the chance to
sit down and watch it myself and needless to say, I was
shocked....SHOCKED at how they opened the movie by killing off
John Connor on screen. I never in a million years expected
Cameron to go down this road and the reason why: Alien 3. Ya
see, what made Aliens such a spectacular movie in its own right
was the relationship forged between Ripley and Newt as she
became Newt's defacto Mother as she did whatever it took to
protect her. So, when they opened Alien 3 and we hear that Newt
is dead, it really left a bad taste in my mouth because it
basically rendered Alien and Aliens as a moot point. There was
so much fan outcry for doing this that it basically crippled the
series from here on out.
Fast forward to now and here we are again. I just for the life
of me can't figured out why Cameron would write this given the
fan backlash to them killing off Newt. As I remembered reading
years ago, he himself was not happy how they chose to eliminate
Newt. So this just begs the question of what was Cameron
thinking doing the very same thing 30 years later. Honestly,
they didn't have to kill him off in order to tell this new
story. There can be multiple targets that are deemed threats to
the Terminators in the future. You can still tell the story
without basically wiping clean everything that came before. I
dunno. Just....speechless.
Okay, with that out of the way, how does Terminator: Dark Fate
play as a movie? If you're looking at it just as a movie unto
itself, it's actually a fun movie. A lot of great action pieces
and the story is as simple as it gets and easy to follow along.
Great to see both Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger
return in their respective roles. Also really like newcomers
Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, and Gabriel Luna as the main
storyline driving this movie. I can easily say this is the best
Terminator movie since T2, without a doubt and would gladly add
this to my personal DVD library. But it's just not sitting well
with me how they started the movie. It was cool to see younger
Sarah, John and Terminator in the scene though. Wasn't expecting
to see a young Edward Furlong on screen ever again. 4 Stars out
5.
