I think you said it best when you said that Diver Down is the
ultimate 'Party Album' which is exactly how I described it in my
review and I STILL stand by that statement. It's the perfect
album to play, whether you alone or with friends. It just sucks
you in and you get lost in it, in a good way. Happy Trails to me
is the ONLY way they could have ended the album and send you on
your way with a smile on your face. It still does that for me
and that's saying a lot about the longevity and the high regard
I have for it. It's easy to get jaded by an album as old as this
one is, if it's not done right. Here, it's like the perfect
album and highly underrated compared to some of their other more
revered releases.
As for the track list order, this wasn't the only time the band
really f ucked up on this. If you have Van Halen (The Best Of
Both Worlds) 2004
HTML http://pennycan.createaforum.com/music/van-halen-discography-(the-sammy-hagar-years)/msg2271/#msg2271,<br
/>you can see the disregard or care for doing it right, which is
a
problem still irks me about this particular set.
So, dude...which album you vote for as the best VH album in the
Poll? Curious to know what you hold up as the highest standard
in it's career.

picking a best album by VH during the DLR era is tough....I
think I would lean towards the first record (I didn't vote yet)
what's funny and we've talked about this before.
It's not necessarily my personal favorite...but I think it's
solid as a ROCK.
No other record they have is as well thought out, constructed,
and just a template for a perfect late 70's hard rock lp.
They re-invented (scratch that) They INVENTED the NEW wheel with
that record and I have to give props for that....it changed
music for the next 15 years
I will vote...but I might go through the entire catalog first
just to confirm my choice.

I wouldn't do it any other way. That should keep you busy for
the next 2 weeks knowing how many times you like to play the
same album over and over to make sure you're not missing any of
the smaller details in the recording.

I do actually try and keep it natural....I just listen and don't
dissect it....just take in the big picture you might say.
like I said in that e mail...the new record on a first listen I
loved...but I've heard it now maybe 4 or 5 times and it's giving
me a headache for some reason....I am having a harder time
taking in 13 VH tracks and I really think the song order or
maybe floater tracks and creating an uneven landscape for my
mind to cascade through in a natural way.
we'll see I do like it quite a bit/

It's strange that you and I are coming from opposites ends of
the spectrum on A Different Kind Of Truth. Like I said in my
original review, it wasn't gelling with me. It was a slightly
above average album for me the first time around. But now that I
have basically been playing it non stop from last night and all
day today and right this very second, it's getting better and
better for me. I'm totally into it right now and I'm not even
close to being done with it. I do get what you mean by 13 songs
though. What's the average VH-Dave song per album? 8-9? So, yeah
it is different from just a 30 minute in and out album. You're
just used to only that length with Dave is my guess.
But I can tell you this, if the VH boys had released this one
with only 8 or 9 songs, fan backlash would be out in full force
complaining about getting "gypped" and not getting their money's
worth. As you know, CD's have changed the music landscape for
all artist to pack more songs on newer releases.
Stick with the album. If that doesn't work, at least Stay
Frosty, Motherf
ucker![IMG]

nice!
I don't dislike the new album
my brain is trying to process it all. (hence the headache)
hahahaha
but I think the order of the songs is throwing me off... older
VH albums were easier to process...trust me I've listened to
many many far more progressive albums, but for whatever reason
my brain is trying to place this record somewhere and it's not
finding it's exact spot.
and I agree and said that there is no way they could come out
with anything other than a full tour de force...so I have no
problem with the length of the record or 13 track.
the first sammy album 5150 filled a full cd nearly to the very
last second...outside (the final track) had literally 2 seconds
left I think for a full CD.

Here's something that might explain why you have a headache and
something I noticed the first time through, no ballads...or at
least slower tempo songs to allow you a moment to recover from
the onslaught that's on ADKOT. Now when I say slower, I'm kinda
thinking along the lines of I'll Wait from 1984
HTML http://pennycan.createaforum.com/music/van-halen-discography-(the-david-lee-roth-years)/msg2052/#msg2052.<br
/>That's not what I would even call a ballad at all, but it was
different sonically to give the listener some room to breath
when it got back to doing more aggressive, riff-heavy songs.
Personally, that was my BIGGEST concern going into this album
since Eddie was all about ballads during the Sammy Hagar years
and was a huge sticking point with me. I'm happy there are no
ballads to be found here, but I do see the benefit of a slower
tempo song to mix it up though.

Interesting discussion. I'll be picking the new one up in a
couple of hours and now rather psyched about hearing it. I'm an
avid fan, but you sonsabitches are INTO it. ;D

I've been patiently waiting for your review of this Mac and I'm
sure you will enjoy it. I was also expecting to hear something
from Umaine as well. I know that he prefers Sammy in the band,
but I figured that since this is the return of Eddie, that he
would be all over this one.
