I love Heist Flicks. I don't love Ocean's 8. It's not a bad
movie, it's just.....okay. Before I jump into my thoughts of the
movie itself, I gotta address the numbering that is Ocean's 8.
With no backstory or spoilers going into this movie, I just
assumed that since we are a 8, that the events that take place
here take place before the events of Ocean's 11, 12 and 13. I
just assumed this was going to be an all-female prequel to those
flicks with an eye toward doing 9 and 10 of this flick did well
at the box office. But when the movie opens up....I literally
thought this was a Reboot/Remake with the opening scene with
Sandra Bullock basically doing the very same Parole Scene from
the opening of 11.
So, after we get a bit into the movie, we learn that Sandra's
character is actually the sister of Danny Ocean, as played by
George Clooney. Clearly, this was and is a "sequel" in that this
takes place after the events of 13. You following me so far?
Yeah, the numbering is confusing and makes the brain work harder
than it needs to. But I also get that 8 is a good number because
Hollywood is not going to pay for 14 name actresses to carry
this flick, which is a very risky bet with an all new cast.
As for 8, like I said, an 'okay' movie with a very predictable
heist, which itself wasn't anywhere near inventive and cool as
what we got in 11. As for the cast that made this, we have a
couple of Hollywood A-Listers in Sandra, Cate Blanchett and Anne
Hathaway. Everyone else is either a C-Lister, a Musician
(Rihanna), or people I've never seen before. Helena Bonham was
thrown in to add some "clout" I guess. Anyway, with that said, I
thought the 3 cameos we get with Elliott Gould and Qin Shaobo
reprising their roles was a nice callback. As for the 3rd, it
was George, albeit it a Framed Picture of himself. Would have
been great to get more cameos. So, I guess I can kinda recommend
this in spite of its flaws. A rainy day movie.
