Japanese Monster Movie Homage; No 3D[/glow]
[quote]Many people who’ve been following development on
Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim have pointed out the surface
similarities to popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Del Toro’s film pits building-sized robots called Jaegers
(controlled by two soldiers who must form an intimate melding of
minds, to work in unison) against gargantuan monsters known as
Kaiju, who invade Earth through an inter-dimensional rift.
The original Pacific Rim script draft penned by Travis Beacham
(a co-writer on Clash of the Titans) has been retooled to better
fit del Toro’s interests, according to the fan-favorite
filmmaker of Blade II, Hellboy, and Pan’s Labyrinth.
Furthermore, del Toro announced at Comic-Con that Pacific Rim
does not reuse archetypal monsters from mythology, anime, or
Japanese monster cinema (Godzilla movies, being the obvious
example).
We’ve nonetheless been operating under the assumption that
Pacific Rim serves as a direct homage to those old-fashioned
monster films, borrowing stylistic elements and rejuvenating
tired tropes from the genre (similar to what Quentin Tarantino
does). Del Toro informed Hero Complex that’s not the case,
saying:
[quote]“I felt there was a chance to do something fresh,
something new that at the same time was conscious of the
heritage, but not a pastiche or an homage or a greatest hits of
everything. One of the first things I did is make it a point to
not check any old movies or any other references. Like start
from scratch.”[/quote]

Beacham’s intent, of course, remains open for interpretation, as
it’s possible the screenwriter’s original artistic vision was
that Pacific Rim would be closer to a live-action NGE movie. Del
Toro is renowned for crafting some of the more memorably twisted
and demented screen creatures in recent film history; with
Pacific Rim, he hopes to maintain his originality while paying
respect to the Kaiju sub-genre (and not just copying what’s been
done before).
Spanish-language site Uruloki spoke recently with del Toro,
where the director elaborated on his intention to produce Kaiju
that only loosely imitate the traditional designs featured in
Japanese pop culture (while also delivering a final film that’s
very much its own beast):
[quote]“At [the table for 'Pacific Rim'] were very clear
ideas-for example, have the appearance of the Kaiju, admitted to
some extent the idea of “man in disguise” or “man in suit” that
is vital to the genre. Sticking to the “species” of Kaiju
classic admitted in genealogy (the Kaiju flying the Krusty, the
Bug, The Reptile, etc, etc) and try to get their textures and
morphology were rooted in very real hipertexturas animals but
combining textures, textures monumental, almost geological. In
every movie I try to bring someone new. And in every project I
bring a team member who is making his first big movie and his
first feature film because it always brings a fresh perspective.
What we do ask is that people do not derive ideas from films
already made. I ask you to express what is theirs.”[/quote]
Del Toro spoke at Comic-Con about some of the tricks he pulled
with the camera lens while shooting Pacific Rim, in order to
give the CGI-heavy proceedings a more grounded and realistic
feel. The filmmaker relied on RED EPIC cameras during production
(the same tech Peter Jackson’s using for the Hobbit trilogy),
but explained to Collider why he never considered either native
or post-converted 3D a viable option:
[quote]“Originally there was a discussion that took a long time
to overcome that was to make the movie 3D. And I didn’t want to
make the movie 3D because when you have things that big… the
thing that happens naturally, you’re looking at two buildings
lets say at 300 feet [away], if you move there is no parallax.
They’re so big that, in 3D, you barely notice anything no matter
how fast you move. ”To force the 3D effects for robots and
monsters that are supposed to be big you are making their
[perspective] miniaturized, making them human scale.”[/quote]
Taking everything del Toro’s saying into consideration, Pacific
Rim should easily feel like one of his films, above all else.
That’s very much an encouraging (if not downright exciting)
thought, given the quality of del Toro’s previous cinematic
output

New York Comic-Con has given the ever-busy director/producer a
chance to put out a couple new nuggets. First up is a cool,
retro poster that you can see in the gallery below
Possibly more exciting still is word that del Toro has been
gathering a team to craft a comic-book adaptation for the film,
which he hopes will be much more than just your bog-standard
tie-in.
A long-time collector of comics himself, del Toro has an idea
that his Pacific Rim title should be more than a way to add to
the movie’s PR. “We are not doing just a spinoff, it’s not an
ancillary market decision to go to the comic. I created one that
allows us to set up and expand and explore things that are
spoken of in the movies, but this is another kind of creative
important endeavour,” he tells the LA Times.
“One of the things that we did in the movie that I intend to
continue/create in the comic book was to convey that this is a
real world with real mechanics and real people fixing valves and
machines. It’s a livelihood.”
The initial story will set the scene for why humanity is
battling gigantic creatures. “The idea was to set up the
creation of the world that is in Pacific Rim, sort of give the
stories and the drama and the science that occurs after the
first kaiju makes land in 2013, and what happens when that
occurrence is repeated over and over again until we realize that
it’s not a single occurrence or a series of occurrences, but a
full-on invasion.”
And you’ll likely be less than shocked to learn that despite a
multitude of projects in the works, he still intends to be
hands-on with the comic. “I try to get involved as much as
possible. The first decision that is needed from me is to hire
the right artist, the right colourist, and the right writer for
the books. That’s the part that I think is most important. It’s
like directing in the comics... In Pacific Rim, I expect to
approve the layout, the pencils, the inking, the colouring, the
cover, the script... everything.”[/quote]

3D Conversion, & Possible Sequel[/glow]

movie when the first trailer hits theaters next month.
In a recent interview, the director revealed that the trailer
would come out in mid-December (probably with The Hobbit). He
also talked about the ongoing 3D post-conversion for the movie
and the possibility of a sequel.
“We certainly started tossing ideas for possibilities of a
sequel and Travis Beacham and I are writing a proposal of ideas,
but at the same time I know I don’t want to do that next. I want
to do something else, I want to do something in a different
genre that’s not so big. So I don’t know yet what it’s gonna be,
but I know that next year I’m delivering Pacific Rim in July and
then I’m doing—God willing—the voice shooting for Pinocchio and
then the pilot for The Strain for FX.”
Speaking with Collider, del Toro said that much of the film’s
large-scale special-effects footage is being finalized for the
trailer. Del Toro also spoke about the film’s 3D, which was the
subject of some contention earlier this year when he said it
wouldn’t be 3D before making the announcement that it would be
post-converted to 3D.
“We’re getting footage in 3D from two forms: one is all the
footage that is CG is being composited directly by ILM. So John
Knoll, who is one of the greatest minds in the business, is
supervising that there’s no miniaturization in those shots. And
they’re looking gorgeous; they’re coming basically fast and
furious every week. And the other sources of 3D is Stereo D, and
those are looking fantastic too.”
Despite his initial opposition to post-conversion, del Toro
reiterated his comments from the Pacific Rim New York Comic-Con
panel that the footage is looking good so far.
Obviously, del Toro isn’t going to trash the 3D conversion for
his own movie, so it’s important to take his feedback with a
grain of salt. However, given how much effort del Toro puts into
the practical effects on his films, it’s reasonable to expect
the same exacting detail for the digital effects and 3D
conversion.
Later in the interview, del Toro also broached the subject of a
possible Pacific Rim sequel, but made it clear that, while there
have been some preliminary story discussions, he has several
other projects he wants to get to first, including Pinocchio and
the TV adaptation of his comic book series The Strain.
Guillermo del Toro is one of those rare directors that makes
people sit up and pay attention – and the epic nature of Pacific
Rim has the potential to be his biggest movie yet. That, coupled
with the film’s interesting cast, including Idris Elba, Charlie
Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day, makes it one of the
most-anticipated movies of 2013.
Look out for the Pacific Rim trailer to hit theaters next month.
The movie’s official release date is July 12, 2013.
