Ever since the trailer dropped for Hacksaw Ridge, I have been
waiting to get my hands on the DVD. I had never heard of this
specific story before, where a conscientious objector refuses
to go into war with any kind of weapon, instead choosing to save
lives rather than take them. On the surface it sounds like a
made up story geared strictly for Hollywood. As you know, I'm a
huge War Film buff. As much as I hate the idea of war itself, I
find myself transfix in this genre more than most other genres
for some reason. Maybe it's the underdog, fighting for country,
fighting for your fellow man that appeals to me. I know it's not
the violence that's for damn sure. And Hacksaw Ridge is one
violent film. It's probably one of the most gruesome War Flicks
out there. There is so much carnage (to drive home how horrific
War is and what the insurmountable odds that Desmond Doss was up
against). The carnage was unrelenting to the point of becoming
desensitized to it as the movie plays out.
The movie begins and ends with Andrew Garfield as Doss. He
steals the movie. You can't help but root for the guy and cheer
him on in the face of adversity, on and off the battlefield.
It's one thing to face a known enemy (Japan), it's other to be
treated so poorly by his fellow soldiers who objected to his
ideology. Equally impressive was the direction of Mel Gibson.
He's back and in a big way. All the accolades bestowed on
Garfield and Gibson is justified. A straight forward retelling
of Doss' story from humble beginnings to his time in War. I
highly recommend this to anyone that is a fan of the genre or
just wants to experience humanity if the most vile of
conditions. Also stars Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa
Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn.
