I can't remember much of the original Ben-Hur flick as the last
time I saw any of the movie I had to still be in Elementary
School. One thing I do know is that it's considered a Hollywood
Classic and my initial reaction when I heard they were doing a
remake of the film was one of confusion. There are some movies
that just shouldn't be touched...good or bad. I had very little
interest in seeing the Remake and left it at that, although I
did keep hearing about how most people hated this version. The
only reason why I ended up picking the DVD up is because there
was nothing else on my list available.
So, is the movie as bad as most people make it out to be? Nope.
It's a decent flick and there were parts that I really liked.
I'm a sucker for Sword and Sandals genre movies and an even
bigger fan of Religious overtones. For obvious reasons, this
movie is about Ben-Hur and not Jesus, who does pop in and out of
a few scenes throughout the flick. I wanted more of this as I
found it to be the best part of the film. As for the Chariot
Race that everything leads up to, it was okay for what it was.
Nothing like the original if you ask me. I may not remember much
of the original, but I do remember the Race. As for this
version, it's worth a Rent if nothing else but to see Morgan
Freeman doing his thing. As for Jack Huston in the title role, I
had no idea is was him until halfway through the movie when his
voiced slipped into that unmistakable tone and cadence. When he
went there, I kept trying to figure out where I knew that voice
from. A few lines in and I immediately knew who it was (Richard
Harrow from Boardwalk Empire)
