Chapter One: The River's Edge / Chapter Two: A Touch of Evil

I've been meaning to check this out for awhile but I totally
forgot that it had already started airing. I'm 4 weeks behind
schedule, but I managed to knock out the first two today and I
gotta say, this is damn good so far. I remember the Trailer
dropping awhile back, but I wasn't really paying attention to
the characters. Had I paid attention, then it wouldn't have been
a huge surprise to learn that everyone in Riverdale comes
straight from the pages of Archie's Comics. Yes, THAT Archie's
Comics. Now I'm not a history buff and I don't know all that
much about the comics itself. Sure, I read a handful of issues,
but that was when I was in Elementary School. So, as you can
guess, my knowledge of any and all past story-lines is beyond
limited going into the series.
At face value, Riverdale has some subtle and not so subtle
stylistic influences. On the surface what comes to mind is that
a big chunk of what I've seen so far reminds me a lot of
Veronica Mars (a series that I still love to this day), as well
as some Mean Girls, Friday Night Lights and even Disturbing
Behavior seems to have it's imprint here. You all know that the
High School genre is one of my favorite genres to write
personally. So I have been itching find a High School series
that was and is worthy of my time and investment. Riverdale
right now is hitting the marks I like. The first two episodes
were fantastic. Right from the very start with the VO narration
from Jughead, I was hooked. The rest of the cast that makes up
Archie, Betty, and Veronica are perfectly cast. I'm definitely
on board till for the rest of this season.

I think I'm up to Episode 10 now and so far every episode has
been super fun to watch. Great characters, great actors and very
well written. I give all the episodes 4-5 Stars. Why am I
posting this one today? Well, the last episode...more
specifically the final shot of the episode is what made me grin
from ear to ear and slap myself on the forehead and say "D'oh!"
Whenever I watch a show or a movie that centers around High
School....I ALWAYS compare it to The Breakfast Club. So when
Archie's mother was finally revealed to be portrayed by Molly
Ringwald....it made perfect sense. I can't believe I didn't see
this coming since bother Archie and Mom have Red Hair and made
the casting even more obvious. So yeah, loving the show. It's
easily my Favorite New Series of the year. FYI, the person I
thought they were going to have as Archi'es Mom: Jennie Garth
for obvious reasons given that the Father is played by Luke
Perry. Figured they would just go for broke and make it a true
nostalgia kick and have the 'It' couple from Beverly Hills:
90210 as parents.

Anatomy of a Murder / The Sweet Hereafter

So, overall this season and the series itself has been a great
surprise...a true guilty pleasure. But there was one minor
hiccup that kinda took it down a notch from being a truly great
series and that was the revelation that Clifford Blossom was the
murderer. I don't know what it is, but having him be the one
just seemed contrived and not really thought out all that well
by the writers. Sure, he may have been the one they decided on
before they ever shot a single frame of Season 1....but it still
doesn't take away from the fact that this was just a little too
obvious of a choice to lean an entire season on. Since the
revelation came before the season finale, I knew that The Sweet
Hereafter would have to kick-start another murder mystery to
hold us over until Season 2 and sure enough, that's exactly what
we got. He good episode, but the fact that they just killed off
Luke Perry's character does suck. I liked the mix of new and old
actors carrying this show. Well, that's one less old. I'm still
sticking with the series no doubt. Why couldn't they have killed
off Robin Given's character of Mayor. That would seem to be a
better and more reasonable choice since they could have made it
"politically" motivated. But then again, everyone would have
applauded this instead of feeling the sting of a cool character
as Fred.

I totally forgot that this was already added to Netflix.
Starting the first episode now (I also noticed Twin Peaks is on
Amazon Prime, I've gotten a hankering to see it but I don't have
time).
BTW, I have to repeat myself. Chip, if you love the high school
genre, you gotta check out the rebooted Archie comics. Archie
itself is more of a comedic drama...

...but I have to give Jughead the edge because it's a little
more cartoonish and comedic... it's rather like The Simpsons
meets John Hughes. There's two trades of each out at least, as
well as a collected TPB called "Road To Riverdale" that's a
sampler of each, out as a tie-in to the show.

Thanks for the heads up. Because of the show, yeah, I'm
definitely interested in checking out the TPB. Looking forward
to your thoughts on the series.

There was a scene where Reggie (hey, Asian Reggie!) is making
fun of Archie and Jughead, and when they're in the same shot, I
just thought '...this is SO f'ing weird, that's Archie and
Jughead on TV being taken seriously. What the f*ck?" It's kind
of unreal.
The show is reminding me of Bates Motel, what with the taking of
an iconic property and telling a different type of story with it
that's not necessarily what the original was.
It is throwing me that Miss Grundy isn't older, though. She
doesn't have to be 60 or whatever, like in the books, and to be
fair, I can't tell how old she is, but it feels like a Diane
Lane-type would be a better fit. Nothing against the actress
playing Grundy, though.
(less than ten minutes after I wrote that, I see the result of
Betty and Veronica's web search, including that picture of old
Mrs Grundy who looks shockingly like the one from the comics!)
edit: Ohmygod, the credits list the "young" version of the
characters as "Li'l." That's AMAZING.

It's making me want to do a "dark, twisted take" of my current
high school characters. Except I'm sh*t at subterfuge. I would
love to parody the Cover Girl product placement, it just keeps
getting so blatant.
Here's one thing I don't get: I know it's all about "who killed
Jason Blossom?" but I find myself thinking "...how the heck
hasn't CHERYL been murdered by this point? That'd be like Who
Shot Mr Burns, EVERYONE would be a suspect. And I don't think
there'd be that much of a manhunt for the killer.
Speaking of which...

I also thought "..why doesn't anyone LEAVE? That would solve
most of their problems" but then I realize that's technically
how this whole thing started. Maybe it's just impossible to
leave the town, horror movie style.
