Even before the movie hit the theaters, I heard the criticism
about why they would or should do a remake of The Magnificent
Seven and granted, I kinda felt that way too. But that wasn't
going to stop me from checking this out regardless. You guys
know that I'm a huge fan of the Western genre. I absolutely love
it and I would like to see more being made. As for the remake, I
actually enjoyed it a lot. Sure, it's predictable in its
paint-by-numbers approach. In my head I was ticking off
everything they needed to cover before it happened. There were
no surprises except for one and that was the 3rd Act. As
predictable as the plot is, I do think it was a concerted effort
on the part of Antoine Fuqua to at least serve up something that
really hasn't been done in a Western on the scale we get here.
Wall to wall bullets and lots of carnage, making this more of a
High Octane Action flick instead of the dusty Western it serves
up in the first 2/3 of the movie. I thought the film looked
amazing. The pacing was solid as well. But it's the cast that
really carries this for sure. Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt,
Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel
Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, and Peter
Sarsgaard all nailed their parts and I found it great to see
Denzel and Ethan reuniting with Antoine again. If they can't do
Training Day 2, this is the next best thing. Worth a Rent for
sure. I'd definitely add this to my Western DVD Library at home.
