I will say straight out, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a
very dumb movie and in spite of the overwhelmingly positive
reviews it has gotten, it's not a movie I would ever watch
again. I do like that they were going down the This Is Spinal
Tap road in their social commentary of the state of music
today....or what passes for "music" these days. The only problem
is that the movie goes to extremes with the jokes in making
their point and maybe that was the intent all along. But to say
this is on the same level as Tap is reaching a bit too far and
wide. Popstar is more of what I would expect to see from Adam
Sandler. Now I'm not saying that Andy Samberg is a world-class
actor mind you, but if you have ever seen Brooklyn Nine-Nine,
then you know that he does have comedic chops and this is what I
was expecting to get here. But the movie is just way too goofy
to take serious and I shouldn't expect the actors to as well.
Then again, maybe that too was their intent. Okay, with that out
of the way, there were some laugh out loud moments that are
worth checking out. Some truly funny bits here and there in
spite of a flawed movie. But as a full-length feature film, it's
a hard one to sit through. I would only recommend this to
stoners on a weekend with nothing else to watch.

I didn't keep it on long enough to get to the music stuff. It
was just too groan inducing for me.

You know, I didn't mind this one as much as you. I did feel it
ran a little long (we know the bend is going to get back
together and i think they could have lost a sequence or two
without really detracting from the flick.
As someone who had to sell fridges with ridiculous wifi add-ons,
the music-playing fridge struck home more than I expected. It's
the exact kind of dumb cross-promotional thing that happens all
       the time now.
Loved the cameos... it's funny because for all the insanity of
the movie, and with some people playing fictional musicians
(Weird Al as Hammerleg, for example) the movie felt like it took
place firmly in the real world. Maybe it was the shorthand of
using real things like TMZ and The Tonight Show, but other
movies have done that and that impression never really came
across like it did here. Weird.
It doesn't really remind me of "Spinal Tap." It actually
reminds me more of "Get Him To The Greek."
