I'm an Olympic nut and this was a no-brainer for something I had
to see. Race is about Jesse Owens and his Olympic domination in
Berlin during the rise of Nazi Germany. I don't know how
faithful everything is in the film compared to real life, but I
get the sense that it's pretty accurate. The only reason why I
suspect some liberties were taken is because of stuff that I
didn't even know about until watching the film. There is an
account of Hitler's snub of Owens in the film contradicts Owen's
own words of the event in question. The movie isn't perfect, but
the one thing it has going for it is that it looks and feels
authentic. The first 2/3 of the movie may be a bit too slow for
people. But it does get better as it goes along. Of course the
best part of the film is the 3rd act during Owen's Olympic races
and in particular, his friendship with Carl "Luz" Long, a German
athlete that deified Hitler by befriending him in plain sight of
the dictator. Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons,
William Hurt, David Kross and Carice van Houten were all great
in this. Definitely worth a Rent.
