Wow. I literally just heard a minute ago that Prince passed
away. Totally shocked and stunned right now. I had heard he was
rushed to the hospital last week due to the flu and was released
shortly after that. So, this news is totally unexpected. I'm at
a loss for words. Did not see this coming at all. Amazing
career. Amazing musician. Way too young.

Not just my fave Prince song, but one of my all-time fave songs
ever is Purple Rain. The song itself is legendary, but his
Superbowl performance just elevates it to another realm. You
know, I read somewhere that Prince has recorded so much stuff
that he never released that the estate could (and will) release
a new album every year for the next 50 years.

This is still the benchmark of what everyone that enters the HOF
needs to live up to. Still the greatest performance ever that
still leaves me speechless. I always get a kick out of watching
Tom and everyone else's reaction to what they are seeing Prince
doing before them. It's awesome. Watch it if you have never seen
it before. Now THAT'S how you play a guitar!

First, how can we not include Kevin Smith's half-hour story of
trying to work for Prince? Classic.

And also, Prince on Muppets Tonight (thanks Digg!)

Okay, confession time: I've never heard a Prince album. I never
even had the Batman soundtrack. Another huge gaping hole in my
past, I wasn't around when he was big, and when I was, it was in
his "Artist Formerly Known As Prince" phase, where he seemed to
be actively avoiding being promoted to cheese off his label.
And I'd never come across a friend or anyone who had a Prince CD
that I could borrow, and I never really saw them out in the
world in the shops, either. At least not where I was looking.
By the time I got big into music, he was gone.
The closest thing I had was... I had a cassette tape of songs
that were marginally connected to Halloween, songs like Monster
Mash, Witchy Woman, etc, but there are so few of those that they
also included stuff like Wooly Bully and then at the end, the
very last track was Batdance. A COVER of Batdance. And they
couldn't use the audio clips from the movie, either, so the dude
singing is also doing the voices for Batman and the Joker. It's
really strange.

The Kevin Smith story has been playing in the back of my mind
ever since hearing the news of Prince's passing. It's a
great story and very entertaining. The other memory that I have
of Prince that has been playing on a loop in my mind involves my
Mom. I still remember the day that she ask me if I had heard of
this "new" artist named Prince (he had been around for a few
years but was still unknown at the time). I told her that I
didn't. All day, she kept singing Little Red Corvette. We ended
up driving somewhere (Sports Arena) and she kept singing the
song. So, that's a fond memory I have of that day and of her. My
mom had the knack of introducing me to all sorts of bands that I
had never heard of: Ratt, Scorpions, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac
and yes, Prince, just to name a few.
