[glow=red,2,300]Raymond Moore[/glow] Indian Wells Tournament
Director
They were words that took tennis back to the dark ages,
the tournament director of one of the sport's most prestigious
events saying that women professionals should get "down" on
their "knees" every night to thank some of their male
contemporaries.
Except Raymond Moore's comments didn't come in the distant past;
instead the South African made the remarks Sunday on the eve of
the singles finals at the BNP Paribas Open, better known simply
as Indian Wells.
"In my next life when I come back I want to be someone in the
WTA, because they ride on the coattails of the men," he told
reporters, referring to the organization that runs the women's
game. "They don't make any decisions and they are lucky.
"They are very, very lucky. If I was a lady player, I'd go down
every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and
Rafa Nadal were born, because they have carried this sport. They
really have."
Moore later apologized but the damage had been done and drew a
swift riposte from the leading player of the women's game.
Serena Williams took aim at Moore after she fell 6-4 6-4 to
Victoria Azarenka in the women's final, which turned out to be
more of a spectacle than Novak Djokovic's 6-2 6-0 thrashing of
Milos Raonic in the California desert.
"I don't think any woman should be down on their knees thanking
anybody like that," Williams told reporters.
"I think Venus, myself, a number of players -- if I could tell
you every day how many people say they don't watch tennis unless
they're watching myself or my sister -- I couldn't even bring up
that number," added the 21-time grand slam winner, referring to
her older sibling, who has claimed seven majors.
"So I don't think that is a very accurate statement. I think
there are a lot of women out there who are very exciting to
watch. I think there are a lot of men out there who are exciting
to watch. I think it definitely goes both ways."
In backing up her statements, Williams pointed to last year's
U.S. Open, when the women's final sold out before the men's for
the first time. Williams was chasing a calendar-year grand slam,
which hadn't been accomplished since 1988.
"I'm sorry, did Roger play in that final?" Williams, ousted by
Roberta Vinci in the semifinals, asked. "Or Rafa, or any man,
play in that final that was sold out before the men's final? I
think not."
Tennis great Billie Jean King, who fought tirelessly for
equality in sports, tweeted her disapproval with the 69-year-old
Moore.
"Disappointed in Raymond Moore comments," the 12-time grand slam
champion said. "He is wrong on so many levels. Every player,
especially the top players, contribute to our success."
As the reaction intensified, WTA CEO Steve Simon -- Indian
Wells' tournament director before Moore -- called Moore's words
"extremely disappointing and alarming."
"As the tournament director of one of the most preeminent events
in professional tennis the comments made today by Raymond Moore
were extremely disappointing and alarming," he said in a
statement.
"The WTA stands on its own and was founded on the principles of
equality and empowerment. I am proud of all those strong
athletes on the WTA who put in hard work and sacrifice every
single day.
"Tennis as a whole is enriched by the contributions and
accomplishments of every single player both female and male."
[glow=red,2,300]Equal pay[/glow]
The furore is just the latest example of the sport of tennis
shooting itself in the foot during 2016.
First a match fixing scandal engulfed the Australian Open. Then
Maria Sharapova admitted to failing a drug test. And now Moore's
stinging views.
Djokovic, meanwhile, reopened the debate about equal prize money
when he was asked about Moore's comments.
"I think that our men's tennis world, ATP world, should fight
for more because the stats are showing that we have much more
spectators on the men's tennis matches," the world No. 1 said.
"I think that's one of the reasons why maybe we should get
awarded more."
"Women should fight for what they think they deserve and we
should fight for what we think we deserve. I think as long as
it's like that and there is data and stats available and
information, upon who attracts more attention, spectators, who
sells more tickets and stuff like that, in relation to that it
has to be fairly distributed."
More responses are sure to pour in this week on the eve of the
Miami Open, the second of tennis' crown jewels in March.
Tennis officials would be forgiven for also thinking: What's
next?
This is Uber stupid on so many levels with so many people.
Including the guy who actually rented that stupid movie.
[glow=red,2,300]Overdue VHS copy of ‘Freddy Got Fingered’ gets
man arrested — after 14 years[/glow]
A North Carolina man was arrested and charged this week
for failing to return a VHS rental, “Freddy Got Fingered,” to a
now-defunct video store some 14 years ago.
James Meyers, from Concord, was served Tuesday with an arrest
warrant and charged with failing to return rental property from
2002. It’s a misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $200,
according to reports.
When Tom Green — who wrote, directed and starred (as Gord Brody)
in the crude 2001 comedy — heard about the criminal charge, he
said he wanted to help.
“If it’s 200 bucks, of course I’ll pay it for him,” Green told
the New York Daily News, “just for the principle of the thing.”
Meyers, 37, was driving his daughter to school Tuesday when he
was pulled over for a burned-out tail light; after police ran
his license, he got the news from an officer.
“He finally comes back and he’s like, ‘Sir, can you step out of
the car?’ and my daughter’s in the backseat, bug-eyed: ‘What’s
happening, Daddy? Are they going to take you to jail for a bad
brake light?’” Meyers said in a YouTube video posted after the
incident. “The guy brings me to the back of the car and he goes,
‘Sir, I don’t know how to tell you this but there’s a warrant
for your arrest from 2002. Apparently, you rented a movie,
‘Freddy Got Fingered,’ and you never returned it.
“So there’s a civil suit that they processed as a criminal case,
and we’re here to take you to jail. But it’s from 14 years ago,
and I see you have your daughter, and I think this is
ridiculous.’
“And I’m looking at this man like, ‘What?’”
Meyers said the officer told him he would let him go but that he
had to report to the police station to “get this cleared up.”
When Meyers arrived at the station, he said, he was arrested.
“For the first time I got put in handcuffs,” he told WSOC-TV.
Concord police said in a statement that the warrant was issued
in February 2002 by J&J Video in Salisbury, N.C.
“The warrant, which is signed by a magistrate, directs law
enforcement officials to arrest a person and take them before a
judicial official without unnecessary delay to answer to the
charges,” police said in a statement. “In lieu of arresting
Meyers on the scene of the traffic stop, the officer allowed
Meyers to arrange a time to come to the Concord Police
Department to be served with the arrest warrant.
“Later in the day, Meyers came to the Concord Police Department
to be served with the arrest warrant. Officers took Meyers to
the Cabarrus County Magistrate’s Office where they assisted him
in getting a written promise to appear in court. Officers are
required by policy to handcuff anyone prior to entering the
secured area inside of the magistrate’s office.”
Green later talked about it on an Australian TV show, saying he
called Meyers on Wednesday night to express his sympathies.
“I actually called him,” he said. “I saw the story was tweeted
to me by one of his friends. I got his phone number. I called
him up.”
Green added that “it’s an example of how bureaucracy can get out
of control.”
Meyers is set to appear in court April 27, according to news
reports.
“They’re not focusing on the crimes I think they should be
focusing on,” Meyers told WSOC. “That hour the cops sat out
there with me, the hour and a half I was down in the
magistrate’s office could have been spent somewhere
else.”
We have a bison preserve by us. The fencing around it is very
rustic and open. Just timbers.
Years ago when going through it, a bison was close to the fence.
This young women, like that dumbass woman, went up, reached
through the fence and pet it. BUT, she for some reason decided
to grab the horns. When the bison jerked its head because it
didn't like that, the woman froze and didn't let go. It threw
her around a bit like a rag. Luckily she was not hurt.
I guess people just forget these animals are wild... And oh so
cute.

wow, just wow with the dumbassory... more of our politicians
living on the pedestal.
Conservatives question Congress's role in Facebook probe
A handful of conservatives are expressing displeasure
after a top Republican senator began digging into allegations of
bias in Facebook's "Trending Topics" feature.
Many Republicans were concerned about reports that contractors
who worked on the feature excluded some topics or stories from
conservative outlets unless more mainstream organizations picked
them up, which the company has denied.
But a number of conservatives said it is not the government’s
job to get involved after Senate Commerce Committee Chairman
John Thune (R-S.D.) sent a letter to the company asking
questions.
Washington Examiner managing editor Philip Klein called Thune’s
letter a “ridiculous move.” Former GOP congressman-turned-radio
host Joe Walsh said it is obvious Facebook has liberal bias but
warned: “Conservatives don’t get government involved. That’s not
what we believe.”
National Review writer Charles C.W. Cooke published a post
titled, “The Senate should leave Facebook alone.”
The article referenced the failings of the now-repealed
“fairness doctrine,” which gave authority to the Federal
Communication Commission to require broadcasters to cover issues
of national importance in a balanced way.
Thune, who also holds a Republican leadership role in the
Senate, said the letter was not meant to suggest anything
“untoward” on the part of Facebook.
“Part of the jurisdiction of our committee is consumer
protection, so we think it’s a perfectly legitimate line of
inquiry,” Thune said Tuesday.
The libertarian-leaning group Tech Freedom had predicted an
overreaction from the right. Even before Thune sent his letter,
the group’s president, Berin Szoka, warned against congressional
action.
“Even if we thought Facebook actually had an axe to grind, that
is not a problem for the government to solve, because they are a
private company,” he said on his podcast this week. “It is up to
them to do what they want. But, of course, in the marketplace of
ideas, we should absolutely be able to bring pressure on them.”
He noted that Facebook, a business driven by advertising, has
little incentive to suppress any side of the debate.
He also argued public pressure from citizens and think tanks is
wholly different from congressional pressure.
“It is not hard to imagine, here, people getting really stirred
up about this on the Hill and inserting themselves into how
Facebook runs its business, and that could become a subtle, soft
form of government control that could actually end up chilling
speech online,” he said.
WTF... how about going after the family?
[glow=red,2,300]Lawsuit blames Snapchat’s speed filter for
Georgia car crash[/glow]
Why you shouldn't snap and drive

A young girl trying to capture the perfect Snapchat is
nothing out of the ordinary — but a speeding selfie comes with
its costs. A new lawsuit alleges that Snapchat's speed filter,
which lets users display the speed at which they're moving while
taking a photo, encourages reckless driving and can cause
automobile crashes.
"Distracted driving "
On September 10th, 2015, 18-year-old Christal McGee was caught
up with trying to get over 100 mph on Snapchat's speed filter
and failed to notice Wentworth Maynard's car pull onto the
Georgia highway she was speeding on. At around 11:15PM, McGee
struck Maynard's Mitsubishi Outlander at 107 mph on a road where
the speed limit was 55 mph.
"Snapchat's speed filter facilitated McGee's excessive speeding.
McGee was motivated to drive at an excessive speed in order to
obtain recognition through Snapchat by the means of a Snapchat
'trophy,'" the complaint states. In fact, even after the
accident, McGee took to the social media platform to post
another bloody-faced selfie with the caption "Lucky to be
alive."
Maynard, an Uber driver, did not resume his shift that night—
instead, he began a five-week stay at a hospital and now suffers
from permanent brain damage. His lawyers claim that he lost 50
pounds, requires a walker or wheelchair to get around, and
cannot work or support himself. They are now are suing McGee and
Snapchat. Maynard and his wife — who was also in the car at the
time of the accident — are seeking damages to cover his medical
bills.
Prior to this incident, petitions on change.org have called on
Snapchat to remove the speed filter but to no avail. The lawsuit
goes on to suggest that despite knowledge of the dangers of the
filter, Snapchat refuses to change or remove it. It cites a
particular case from July 2015 where a woman in Brazil suffered
from severe injuries after a car wreck caused by driving at 110
mph. A study by AT&T showed that "nearly 4-in-10 social media
users tap into social media while driving."
Snapchat has an in-app warning which deters users from using the
filter while driving. Their terms of service say, "Do not use
our Services in a way that could distract you from obeying
traffic or safety laws. And never put yourself or others in
harm's way just to capture a Snap." Despite this, the the
lawsuit says that Snapchat's negligence is concurrent with
McGee's. The lawyers note that Snapchat has a "responsibility to
act reasonably to take steps to eliminate risks associated with
their products," which it failed to do because it has not
removed or restricted the speed filter yet.
