The way Season 2 ended, with Simmons getting swallowed up by the
Monolith had me counting the days of summer until the return of
MAoS. Season 3 couldn't get here fast enough as I really didn't
know what the Monolith was and what exactly happened to Simmons.
Was she stuck inside a rock? Was she killed off? Who the f*ck
knew. We don't learn her fate until the final scene of Episode 1
when we discover that the Monolith is a black hole teleportation
device and see her on another planet. Season 3 picks up 6 months
later from the season finale and in that time, Fitz never gave
up and has been searching for answers to what that rock is and
how to save her. Really loved the scene where he has a meltdown
at realizing that she is long gone and takes out his anger on
the Monolith. Very powerful moment.
That brings us to tonight's episode and it was f*cking awesome.
The whole rescue with Fitz diving head first into the Monolith,
traveling to another planet and finding Simmons just as the
black hole was closing and disintegrating into dust was epic. I
was totally on the edge of my seat thinking Fitz was going to
let go of her hand. When it was revealed that he had in fact
brought her back, I don't think I've ever been that happy for
two characters on this show as I was tonight. Now she better
show her gratitude and hook up with Fitz. He's earned it! Out of
all the characters that come and go and all the superheroes and
whatnot that populate SHIELD, I never would have thought that it
was two scientists with no powers of any kind that would prove
to be the most compelling of the series.

Episode 5
4,722 Hours

Episodes 3 and 4 were decent episodes and the most fascinating
thing about those episodes were related specifically to Jemma
Simmons and her fragile emotional state of mind since her
rescue. If you have been following the show or my reviews, you
will know that the best parts of Agents of SHIELD is the story
line of Jemma and Fitz. You can't help but pull for those two
people to get together. But even though Jemma made it back to
Earth, I knew there would be something in the way of that
happening anytime soon. At the end of last weeks episode, Jemma
says she needs to go back to the planet she was stranded on for
6 months. Whoa! Why?! So, that's where we pick up in 4,722
Hours. Kinda. The entire episode is a flashback in which we see
how and what happened to her on said planet. The episode
basically starts off as Cast Away where she needs to fend for
herself, hunt, eat and explore. The wrinkle is that there is no
sunlight.
When she is eventually captured by another 'being' who turns out
to be another stranded survivor, an astronaut from 2001, I
immediately knew that he would in fact be the roadblock to Jemma
and Fitz 'Happily ever after....' story. Sure enough, over time,
Jemma and Will become a couple. They are the only two
people on the planet (that we know of) and with their outlook
for survival at an all time low, of course they would turn to
each other. By the time we get to the second to last scene of
the episode, we see that the flashback we are seeing is in fact
her telling the story to Fitz in present day, which means he is
hearing for the first time about Will, the one that she is in
love with. How heartbreaking that must have been for him. He's
got one of two choices: Help bring him back or do nothing. It's
Fitz, of course he is going to help her, but in doing so, he
seals his fate (for the time being) of driving a wedge between
him and Jemma. No 'Happily ever after....'.
The entire episode was fantastic. Easily my favorite episode for
the series, but more to the point, it's the best episode as
well. Really can't wait to see next weeks episode. I'm sure when
they rescue and bring back Will, he will become a member of
SHIELD given that he is from NASA. It would make sense he would
join their ranks. Also, it's a way to rub their relationship in
Fitz's face, which makes for great TV. 4,722 Hours gets 10 Stars
for sure. I give A Wanted (Inhu)Man and Devils You Know 4 Stars
each.

Season 5 and Finale

Not gonna start another thread, so I'm gonna post here about
Season 5 and the Finale as a whole. Simply put, this series just
keeps getting better and Season 5 is by far the best and
certainly the most fun I've had watching SHIELD. Having the gang
sent to the future....in space no less for the bulk of Season 5
is what you call charting a "different course" and giving the
series a shot in the arm. Not that it needed it, but it was cool
to see that the creative team behind the show was willing to go
there. It felt different for all the obvious reasons, and yet it
feels right at home and totally plausible for what we get here.
I'm a sucker for the "fish-out-of-water" plot device and seeing
the characters have to react, then adjust accordingly was always
fun to watch. Last season was pretty dark. This has it's moments
of serious sh*t, but just felt a whole lot lighter this season.
As for the Season Finale, this is easily the best so far. I went
through a whole range of emotions watching this one. I was
happy, sad, heartbroken. I experienced dread, relief,
exhilaration and everything else in between. I'm glad that the
series has been picked up for another season (shortened 13
episode season, which signifies it will be the finale one), but
the way that they end the Season Finale should have been it's
swan song. It was so perfect and touching, especially for
Coulson and May, that ending it here was the way to go out. Even
with the knowledge that Fitz is out there waiting to be rescued
and save and brought "back to life" didn't need any further
explanation. We know the gang will find him. Speaking of Fitz,
man, his demise and everyone's reaction to it was heartbreaking.
The look on Simmon's face was crushing. Anyway, yeah, this
Finale was fantastic and I could watch it multiple times and
take away something different from it each time. Season gets 5
Stars, Finale gets 10 Stars.
