A$$HOLE review
HTML http://i1076.photobucket.com/albums/w449/blasterkid2011/aaaaa.jpg
mine won't be as fancy as some of these in terms of
imagery...although I will come back and edit this and try and
add some eye candy;
so A$$HOLE...Gene's second solo effort (if I am not mistaken)
track 1 Sweet and Dirty Love I really like this song...im fact
it's a GREAT rock/metal track. A kick ass tune that grabs you
by your suspenders and says WAKE UP....IT'S TIME TO ROCK! and
the guitar playing, vocals, everything...all awesome....perfect
start to a new solo album from Gene.
Track 2 Firestarter a Prodigy cover...is ok...it's not
bad...maybe more pointless because I think the performance
itself from Gene seems a tiny bit lack luster....if he would
have dug in and really done some "vocal story telling" I think
he could have really sold this as something special and
extremely heavy and menacing.
track 3...weapons of mass destruction...very cool title...and to
be honest although this leans towards a more generic style of
metal I am not a huge fan of...the song is very good and the
guitar solo is awesome.
track 4 will scare you at first...almost sounds like the last
track on Stone Temple Pilots "the second album" ditty that ends
the CD of I believe it's Tiny Music....but Waiting for the
Morning Light is an ok song...I think about midway through the
bridge is by far the best part...the verses kind of are
boring...I like this kind of music, unfortunately it's just not
a great song....so this maybe so far is the weakest track...and
NOT because it's different and about as far removed from rock as
you can get...it's just not a great song.
track 5...Beautiful; ok this starts of sounding like bad "world
music" from the 80's/ it's not so much that it's very different
than what you'd expect from Gene...it's just not a great
song...it's Beatlesque but that is sort of an obvious thing to
point out....Gene can do this kind of music and I think make it
amazing...but this song and the arrangement is just not that
good...I don't hate it...but I'd give it a 2 out of 5 pressed to
give it a rating on it's own.
track 6...a$$hole...did he listen to Avril Lavigne to write this
song?? **** is a fun song...again kind of like an 80's Greg
Kihn party jam or something....nothing really bad about a simple
rock heavy chorus with some humor involved...would have been
good in a teen movie or something.
track 7.. "Now that you're gone"...ok this is a GREAT song that
I think "waiting for the morning light" and "beautiful" try and
be...this is a well crafted song...with some real mood and magic
to it. Kind of like an Oasis styled Beatle sounding track...I
really like this one...IPOD worthy as a single for sure. Gene
you NAILED this one...Lenon would be proud/
track 8...whatever turns you on....kind of a weird mix of
Sublime and Uncle Cracker...or like a Kid Rock track.....it's
not bad....sort of ties in with the Assshole vibe...just a good
party jam...I ain't mad at it ;)
track 9....DOG; is very Joe Walsh-ish. Dog is almost like a
futuristic version of something Walsh might have done...or even
like Jimmy Buffet or Loggins and Mesina would have done in the
late 70's...it's very sexy with a bit of an island-vibe to
it...you might even say Robert Palmer-esque....a few ****tails
and a moonlit beach would be the perfect accompanyment to this
song...and a sexy lady!
track 10 Black Tongue....very cool track...almost a mash up of
Rocky Mountain way (hey interesting because I just referrenced
Joe Walsh above) but it's a cross between Rocky Mountain Way and
Black Velvet....some really awesome George Harrison styling on
guitar in the beginning morphing into heavily imspired Hendrix
playing for the outro (and even a quick audio snippet of Jimi
and Frank Zappa)
track 11 Carnival of Souls: ....this almost sounds like the
KILLERS at first....then it goes into a nice Hendrix Crosstown
Traffic vibe.....really cool song...Honestly Gene was onto
something with this combo of influences...it's a shame sometimes
he doesn't focus only on music...the guy has got some major
skills. again
great solo on this track...I have NO idea who's playing but it's
cool...this one had a tiny bit of a Steve Vai vibe to it.
track 12...."if I had a gun"....just kind of there...not a fan
of the song itself....was just kind of a throw away track with
maybe slightly relevant lyrics at the time because of the
Columbine shooting...but again I will go right back directly at
the song itself....it just wasn't that good. If they dug a
little deeper and did something Zeppelin style from say Zeppelin
III or Physical Graffiti...it might have been cool and any
lyrics would have been compelling...it probably took longer to
write this paragraph than the song itself :)
Track 13 final track 1,000 dreams...I like it...kind of a
country slide guitar thing meets a psychedelic "island" jam...a
lullaby in a way...but it's a full track...not a 60 second sort
of "final thought" a very nice song honestly.
Gene you were so close with this record...a little more effort
and you would have had something to really be proud of...in this
state....I'd give this record a C+ there's a ton of potential
but missed the mark about 40% of the time..maybe a little more.
I don't think this is just a "completest" record
though...meaning it's so awful only someone with OCD should get
it...there's some good music on here...especially if you are a
fan of lots of different styles of music.

Great review dude. I have the CD, but I have only listened to it
maybe 3 times at most. But there are a couple of songs that I
still go back and listen to every once and awhile. Dog for me is
by far the best track based on the clever lyrics. Okay, maybe
not that clever since that's more or less how he talks to chicks
anyway. But I love the groove on the song itself and it's one
that ends up getting played on an endless loop. The other song
that I always go to is the one you're not fond of and that's
Waiting For The Morning Light. I love the melody. It gets stuck
in my head for days on after the fact. Another reason why I dig
the song as much as I do is that it's way out of Gene's comfort
zone. Can you think of any other song that he has recorded that
sounds like that in both style and sound? There isn't one. I
like the back story to the song as well as this was co-written
with Bob Dylan. Who would have guessed he was a member of the
KISS Army?
I had a review for this on another forum and I remember it
giving it something like 2 out of 5 stars. There were just way
too many misses here and of course the album as a whole doesn't
flow for obvious reasons because he just went into the Studio
with the intention of recording whatever song he had written
over the years. So, it makes sense that the album from start to
finish would be something akin to dropping acid and not having a
clue as to what is going on.

One other thing, and you know how much I love Gene's KISS Solo
Album, but A$$hole kind of pinpoints that Gene may have
something that "looks good on paper" but ultimately fails due to
"laziness" or spreading oneself thin with so many other projects
going on. There really was no need for this solo album, so there
was no drive to make it any better than the end result. But with
his KISS Solo venture, there was a lot to prove and the results
show and it makes me appreciate it even more now than I did
before, especially with A$$hole out there for consumption.

I totally agree...he's got some great influences that don't fit
under the KISS veil...and I am totally fine with that...in fact
I like a ton of different music so him doing some old school
40's romance island jam...or some 60's Beatles style thing I
like....something 100% NON KISS....hey that is fine with me/
But yeah I just think a few of the songs...he should have been
more critical of...considering most were probably collaborations
or songs given to him or bought....he should have been more
choosy....the genre and style hoping don't bother me...just a
bad or average song...is still that no matter how you slice it.
and I mean an easy song to criticize would be
Firestarter....it's just not a great performance from him....if
he would have really worked that track out and like....beefed it
up...made it down and dirty like who knows a Ministry track, or
what is that German band.....Rammstein....man he could have
maybe trumped the original version...you never know.
but yeah laziness or a lack of really needing or wanting to do
something great diluted and ultimately...made this a bit of a
misfire.

I think the biggest fail on the album is in fact Firestarter.
I'm a huge fan of Prodigy, so I was very curious to see what he
could do with the track. Really not sure what he was trying to
do with the remake on his end. It was like he was kind of
"projecting the Gene Simmons mythos" with the song as some sort
of carry over from KISS-land into.......into something. I just
don't know what that is. More about "image" than the actual
music....even with a song like Firestarter. He probably had the
idea for the video long before he even got around to recording
the song itself and just tailor-made it to the visuals.

I love the fact we can talk about KISS and it never gets
old....even their missteps are interesting
what is it about this band???
can you break it down?

KISS is original, but far from perfect. If everything was
perfect, there would be no need to talk about them. Perfect is
boring....but f*ck ups are awesome.

.....and 40 years later, they are still larger than life and
that goes for everyone that has been in the band. I find myself
still fascinated in what Bruce Kulick is doing as much as I do
with Peter and Ace. Even Vinnie's
Howard-Hughes-disappearing-act-dog-killing-wife-beating story is
meant to one day be a major motion picture. Can you say the same
about any other band? Of course not.
