The Romantic Comedy Genre Cliche Thread
By: Chiprocks1 Date: December 5, 2012, 12:33 am

Following in the tradition of the other Genre Threads, what are
some of the common cliche scenes that appear in the Romantic
Comedy genre? As before, be sure to high-lite your scenes in
Yellow so that it's easier to pick them out once this thread
starts to get long.
Tomboy Girl - This seems to be a given in all Rom Coms that the
Tomboy Girl will turn out to be the hottest chick by the end of
the flick. Variations are of course are making them very nerdish
with Black Rim Glasses.
Opposites Attract - Yes, if they hate each other at the start of
the movie, you know they are going to end up together.

Did you see "Imagine Me & You?" It flipped some of the Romcom
tropes on the head pretty well, totally not what I expected and
quite enjoyable, and not just Piper Perabo and Lena Headey going
at it a little.
One thing I tire of is the forced interaction of the opposites,
opposites can totally attract but I'm annoyed by stuff like "The
Decoy Bride" (which I actually liked, though that's partly due
to David Tennant and Kelly MacDonald) where they're stuck
together and HAVE to be with each other, put in this artificial
pressure cooker where of course over this course of condensed
events they will have feelings for each other that naturally
will last their whole lives. I get that movies have to move
along at a brisk pace but come on. I know that they can't have
realistic people-get-emotionally-hurt stories like Chasing Amy
(that would SUCK, I do want some light romantic fare), but I
would like to be surprised by who people end up with, you know?
And everyone always winds up perfectly paired up-- unless
there's a hopeless dolty fool (right here!), everyone ends up
with someone. That's gotta change. Especially in the days of
franchises, how great would it be if there was a good romantic
comedy where the two scene-stealers get their OWN movie where
their romance is front and center?

Negative Nancy - Usually one or both of the "couples" involved
has a friend that tries to break them up or keep them apart
through the entire movie for a number of different reasons:
Hatred, Jealousy, Possessive, etc....The Girl in the situation
has her girlfriend causing trouble and the Dude has his Bro
basically c o c k blocking him when his "soulmate" is around.

I despise the idea of a character who's only there to support
the main character.
The woman tends to be a workaholic with no time for love, as if
you can't balance that. Either that or she's a carefree manic
pixies dream girl who lets the guy out of his shell. Patton
Oswalt did a great bit about "Hollywood Crazy" vs the real crazy
chicks he used to go out with. It's pretty brilliant.
I pulled up my notes from "This Is War" and forgot how much I
hated that movie and all the issues I had with it, wanting to be
True Lies but skimping on the action storyline and so on.
