The Razors Edge would see Chris Slade join the band for this
album only before the inevitable return of Phil Rudd on Drums.
After Blow Up Your Video, I was pretty certain that this would
be the beginning of the decline of AC/DC. My fears would be for
nothing as the band came roaring back with an album full of hits
like Thunderstruck, Moneytalks and Are You Ready. As good as
those songs are, my favorites have always been Razors Edge and
Shot Of Love. I have to say that I think the boys from down
under are Charger fans to write what is unofficially the
official Chargers song. ;D Every local sports talk show here
in San Diego has been using that song to open up their show for
years and for good reasons too.
Fave Songs: Thunderstruck, Moneytalks, The Razors Edge, Are You
Ready, Shot Of Love and If You Dare.
Album Cover ftw!

Ballbreaker saw the return of Phil Rudd back on Drums. So you
would think that this would a huge return, especially coming off
the heels of The Razors Edge. Granted it had been 5 long years
since their last release. But Ballbreaker is an average album at
best. It's not one of their best, but certainly far from their
worst. This is just an album that I very rarely play anymore due
to lack of true AC/DC hits.
Fave Songs: Cover You In Oil and The Furor
Really not sure what to make of the Album Cover. Seriously, what
the f*ck is it? Angus is standing on a ball that is part of
what..........A gateway of some sort and it's electrified
because it's AC/DC? I dunno. A little more work should go into
designing the concept better IMO.

Stiff Upper Lip. This is on par with Ballbreaker IMO. There are
a couple catchy songs and riffs. But the rest of the album sees
them falling back into automatic pilot mode. For one, there's
really only so much Angus can do with the same bag of riffs that
he does have. Every once in awhile he pulls something out that's
completely fresh, if not original. Another thing about Stiff
Upper Lip is that Brian Johnson's voice is really starting to
show it's wear and tear. Yes, I know what your thinking "Hey
dude, his voice was like that from day 1". True. But he really
is starting to crack here.
If there ever was a case to be made about how all AC/DC songs
sound the same, this is the album that is guilty of that. I have
to point out that Safe In New York City is hands down the worst
song that AC/DC has ever recorded. Ugh.
Fave Songs: Satellite Blues, House Of Jazz and Can't Stand Still
I always thought that the Album Cover was somewhat interesting
in making Angus a statue for all to worship, which back in the
70's-80's would have been a fitting tribute as he was worshiped
by all. But now, it just reminds me of when Michael Jackson
totally lost it and decided to turn himself into a statue so
that he could worship himself, since no one else was doing so.
Don't go down that path Angus! Come back!!!!

Black Ice. I haven't listened to this one since my original
review. So I have had the luxury of distance between the two and
I can say that this one is so much better than I remember it
being. And finishing this one off as the final studio album for
this marathon of mine, I can finally put it in context with
their entire catalog. First off, this is the most "melodic",
radio-friendly AC/DC album. By that I mean, Brian Johnson with
his voice clearly gone on the last album and road wear of tours
year in and year out, he is forced to sing more rather than
relying solely on his patented growl approach. And this is a
good thing. Also of note is that Angus really has expanded his
playing and doesn't rely solely on his bag of riffs. It's still
vintage stuff, but so much more.
The songwriting is also a bit broader which lends itself nicely
to distinguishing itself from one song to the next. So there is
no "it all sounds the same" card to play from fans and non fans
alike. For an example of how different this one is, just one
listen to Rock 'n' Roll Dream is all you need to hear to know
that they made a conscious effort to do something different.
It's a great f*cking song and so unlike anything Brian has sung
before. Love it.
So, I can definitely say this is their best album since For
Those About To Rock. The only song that really falls into the
vintage AC/DC of their classic songs would be their first single
for Rock N' Roll Train, which is a great track by the way. So, I
have to give this one a higher rating this time around.
Fave Songs: Rock N' Roll Train, Skies On Fire, Big Jack,
Anything Goes, She Likes Rock N' Roll, Money Made and Rock 'n'
Roll Dream. MVP goes to....Anything Goes.
I actually like the Album cover as well as the alternate covers
that each came with different designs and not just different
colored logos.

Family Jewels is a 2 Disc DVD set containing pretty much every
single music video and TV appearance of importance in their
career. The 3rd Disc containing a few TV appearance as well as
the newer music videos picks up where the original set leaves
off. The 3rd Disc can be found within the Backtracks box set,
which I don't have. Disc 1 is the Bon Scott years and Disc 2 is
the Brian Johnson years.
Overall, this is a fantastic set. This is the first time I have
watched it since the day I picked it up 5 years ago. And I have
a much better appreciation for this DVD set now, coming on the
heels of my AC/DC Marathon. Sounds and looks great. Highly
recommend this one.
Included with the DVD set is a 23 page booklet with a biography
about the band, TV appearances and music videos.

I don't use iTunes, but I figure this is big news. Only a
handful of artists are not on iTunes yet, I surmise?
[glow=red,2,300]AC/DC releases entire catalog on iTunes[/glow]
NEW YORK (AP) — AC/DC is finally releasing its music
digitally on iTunes.
Columbia Records and Apple announced Monday that the classic
rock band's music will be available at the iTunes Store
worldwide.
Sixteen studio albums will be released, including "High Voltage"
and "Back in Black," which is already in the Top 30 on iTunes'
top albums chart. Two of the group's albums are also in the Top
100 and several of the Australian band's songs are in the Top
200.
AC/DC was one of the few acts that would not release music
through the digital outlet. Two years ago Apple struck a deal
with The Beatles' record label, EMI Group, and management
company, and began selling the group's music. Kid Rock, who had
also been against selling his music through the digital
retailer, is releasing a new album, "Rebel Soul," on Monday and
it's available on iTunes.
Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard's director of charts, said
AC/DC's decision isn't shocking.
"It's something that I think artists realize they need to do in
order to get their music into the hands of their fans and to
make more money," he said. "Right now with CD sales being what
they are, touring is the main source of income and not every
band is equipped to be out on tour 200 days a year to make the
kind of money the need to make, or want to make."
Garth Brooks, however, has yet to release his music on iTunes.
Pietroluongo said he believes the country star will come around,
but he's not sure when that will be.
Four of AC/DC's live albums and three compilation records are
also available. The statement said the songs have been mastered
for iTunes "with increased audio fidelity."
The group's first live album in 20 years, "Live at River Plate,"
is out Tuesday.
PS: waiting for my copy of Live. Hope it comes in soon.

Departure

We all knew that Malcolm has been sick for quite some time and
had been "on a break" since April. But hearing the news being
confirmed that he is now officially out of the band is shocking
to me. Angus gets all the glory, but Malcolm's rhythm playing is
the straw that stirs the pot. He will be missed and it's just
going to feel so odd not seeing and hearing him play in AC/DC.
He is being replaced by his nephew Stevie Young on the album as
well as becoming a member of the touring band.
