I am far from a ska fan as you could get coming from my Hard
Rock/Metal roots. But when I discovered No Doubt with Tragic
Kindom and fell in love with Gwen Stefani, I of course went back
to pick up their first 2 releases.
No Doubt, their Self-Titled debut leans heavily on their ska
roots. I'll admit that it took a long time for me to warm up to
it because it was so far removed from what I fell in love with
on Tragic Kingdom which although ska influenced had a somewhat
Pop/Rock edge to it. There is just absolutely no way I should
like this, but damn it...it's just so infectious that you just
can't help wanting to play this all day long. It's not a perfect
album. Definitely a couple of songs could have been dropped. But
overall, I still find this to be a great album. the album itself
was self-produced and recorded on their own. But when the band
was signed to a record contract, they re-recorded the entire
album.
The band consist of Gwen Stefani on Lead Vocals, Tony Kanal on
Bass, Tom Dumont on Guitar, Adrian Smith on Drums and Eric
Stefani on Keyboards and Vocals. Over the years the band has
used different players for Trombone, Sax, etc... To many to
name. So, not gonna even try.
Fave Songs: Let's Get Back and Brand New Day. MVP goes
to...Sometimes
Album Cover = Meh. It's nothing to write home about.

The Beacon Street Collection was written in large part by Eric
Stefani. But due to Interscope Records trying to lead the band
into a music direction of their own choosing, he would
eventually walk away from No Doubt to pursue an animation gig
with The Simpsons rather than being told what to do. So, this
album is very much in the same vein stylistically and soundwise
as their Self-Titled debut. With hardly any support from their
record company, they decided to build their own recording studio
in their house on....Beacon Street, where they obviously get the
name of their Album from. The entire recording process took all
of a weekend to complete. Take THAT, Def Leppard!!!!!!
The original release of the album was minimal to their hometown.
It wasn't until Tragic Kingdom exploded, that the record company
reissued the album on a larger scale to capitalize from the
momentum the band was generating.
As for the album itself, as before, this album relies heavily on
their ska roots and I find it actually to be even better than
the first. From top to bottom, it has a better overall
cohesiveness with tighter songwriting and performances from the
band. It's pretty amazing how well this came out given the fact
that they did it all on their own, with no input from outside
interferences. If your a fan of ska and of course lots and lots
of horns, this is definitely one to get. Highly recommended.
Fave Songs: All of 'em. Co-MVP goes to...Open The Gate and By
The Way.
Album Cover? Not the best, that's for sure. I'd much rather the
band went with the Back cover as the Front cover IMO. FYI,
that's the house where they lived and recorded this album. You
can see the house in all it's glory if you watch the Trapped In
A Box music video as it was shot entirely on location.
Unfortunately with zero support from their record company, no
videos were released in support of The Beacon Street Collection.
What a shame as there are a handful of songs that deserved being
immortalized on film.

Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time
Tragic Kingdom at #441

Tragic Kingdom wasn't so tragic with Eric Stefani leaving the
band. With his exodus, it drastically changed the No Doubt
sound-scape, both musically and more importantly lyrically. Now,
Gwen was thrust into being the main songwriter of the band,
whereas before she was singing from her brothers point of view,
she would now be singing from her own experiences. Although he
plays on the album, this is ALL Gwen, baby!
The album itself, named as a joke for Disneyland's "The Magic
Kingdom" has sold 18+ million copies worldwide, and why not?
There are so many great songs on here that I basically look at
it as a Greatest Hits set. Just A Girl, Spiderwebs, Hey You,
Sunday Morning, The Climb and Don't Speak is just the tip of the
iceberg here. The entire album is just all around fun and kicks
mucho ass. Perfect from top to bottom. Songwriting is top notch
and the performances are impeccable. I played TK to death when I
picked up the album. I was late to the No Doubt party though. I
knew of them, but never bothered to check them out. It wasn't
till I saw them for the first time performing at the 1996 MTV
VMA where they opened the pre-show by going front and center on
the ledge of Radio City Music Hall. Amazing is all I could think
of when I saw them. Her.

Fave Songs: Every last motherfucking one of 'em. Co-MVP goes
to.....Don't Speak and The Climb. Picking just a couple of songs
as the albums MVP is just wrong. Everyone of them deserves that
honor. I just chose these two as those were the ones I played
over and over then....as well as now.
Album Cover ftw!! Classic. Front and back = Highly recommend

Return Of Saturn was definitely not a return to more of the same
with their follow up to their mega successful Tragic Kingdom.
The other night I was talking to a friend of mine specifically
about ROS and why it wasn't on the same level of TK. And we both
came to the conclusion it had to do with having "too much time"
on their hands to record. There's something to be said keeping
the recording process relatively short. I'm not saying it should
be done in a week or two. But it should never drag on and on.
And certainly not 1-2 years. Both Def Leppard and Guns N' Roses
are guilty on all accounts.
There was so much animosity between the members of the band that
it negatively affected the process,to the point they ended up
taking an extended break from each other. Also, the songs
themselves are more somber than previous efforts. Gwen yearning
for a family, quitting the business, etc..doesn't really make
for an upbeat album. This is not the feel-good-party-album that
is Tragic Kingdom.
Even with all this, I still think it's a good record, if not a
great one. It still has some standout songs like Simple Kind Of
Life, Bathwater, Too Late and Suspension Without Suspense. I can
take or leave Ex-Girlfriend. I think it's been played one to
many times to really even enjoy it anymore. And having said all
that, I think I still will be playing this one for the rest of
the night. Somber = chill. And I just want to veg out right now.
So, this will do just fine with me.
Fave Songs: The ones mentioned above. But my favorite and the
MVP of the album goes to New, which I originally had to buy the
Go Soundtrack to get my hands on it, while waiting for Return Of
Saturn to see the light of day.
Album cover is a cluster fuck. I prefer the back cover instead.

Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time
Rock Steady at #316

Rock Steady is a complete departure from their earlier stuff as
well as being a 180 degree turn from their somber outing of
Return Of Saturn. Where they leaned heavily on their Ska roots
before, here they decided to explore Jamaican dancehall music
with pop with a rock edge. Ska is only marginally hinted at here
on a few songs. So if your expecting more of the same, look
again. This is a good album. I like hearing something different
from the band from album to album and not regurgitating the same
thing over and over. So I applaud them for doing something
different. Having said that, I still prefer Return Of Saturn
over Rock Steady by the slimmest of margins.
In the EPIC FAIL award category, that goes to Rolling Stone
Magazine for choosing Rock Steady ahead of Tragic Kingdom in
their 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time list. Rock Steady is at
#316 and Tragic Kingdom at #441. This is just further proof that
their ranking is flawed beyond justification.
Fave Songs: Hella Good, Detective, Don't Let Me Down, Platinum
Blonde Life and Running. <----MVP and probably my favorite No
Doubt song and the video is one of my all time favorites easily.
I've always enjoyed seeing the history of the band unfolding by
way of photographs.
The Album Cover is just ok. They really should have went with
the back cover as the front cover IMO. Then again, I can just
turn it over and say it is in fact the front cover.

This Greatest Hits box set is officially called Boom Box
(Limited Edition), which contains The Singles 1992–2003, The
Videos 1992–2003, Everything in Time and Live in the Tragic
Kingdom.
The Singles 1992–2003 is exactly that. It's all their biggest
hits in their entire career. The only album not represented here
is The Beacon Street Collection, which is a shame and is why
Boom Box doesn't get a perfect 5 Star rating. Also included as
part of the set is one new track, It's My Life which doesn't
compare to their best songs, but I still like it just the same.
The Videos 1992–2003 is exactly that. All their videos on DVD.
Review coming later.
Everything in Time is an album of B-sides, rare songs, covers
and remixes. This is definitely a must-have for No Doubt fans.
Everything In Time (Los Angeles), Panic and Everything In Time
(London) are my fave Songs here.
Live in the Tragic Kingdom is a Live Concert. Review coming

The Videos 1992 - 2003 collects every single ND video the band
has ever filmed into one nice little package. This was
originally included in the Boom Box (Limited Edition) set and
then later got it's own separate DVD release. There's nothing
better than watching all the videos on a big screen TV. The
video is nothing spectacular as the majority of them are fairly
old. And the audio sadly is not 5.1 Dolby or any other surround
mix. Even with this minor issue, I still think this is a great
DVD IMO.
One if the coolest things is that if you choose Play All to
watch the music videos, in between each video will play Behind
The Scenes Vignettes, which can also be played as a standalone
segment in the bonus section of the DVD. But the best part of
the DVD for me is the Video Conversation With No Doubt where the
band talk about each and every video they have done. Really Cool
stuff.
Also included in the Bonus section are 2 different videos for
